I have been able to get 95% accuracy with dragon using an Olympus digital recorder I attached to a clipboard which allows me to walk around in the apartment and dictate. The clipboard also holds an outline. If a person wants to use a treadmill instead of sitting there are treadmills that fold up to reduce the space they take up.

Thank you for posting this video. I tried Dragon over a year ago and disliked it. It felt really awkward to talk instead of type. But, I was lagging behind in my word count for NaNoWriMo so I decided to give Dragon another shot after watching the video. Amazing. 4000 words yesterday and that helped me get caught up with my NaNo goal.

One thing I've tried that has helped me is to not worry about punctuation of quotations. I do usually say period or question mark to close the thought and I use new line but other than that I fix all of it after I'm done writing. Has anyone else tried that? I initially tried putting everything in and then would get frustrated with all of the mistakes that emerge. I didn't come up with the idea. there was a nice romance author who's name escapes me atm but she said she dictates this way and it has just helped me tremendously.

I also use basic punctuation - full stop, new line mainly.

@@thecreativepenn I don't bother with punctuation during my talking draft because I know that my first draft is going to be revised over and over again before I ever share it with my reps.

I have been using Nuance DNS for years for my College Papers. One of the frustrating things is the accuracy. I will pick up a podcast mic and see how that goes. But nothing is better than DNS. It saves soooo much time. I would never go back to just typing.

I count myself lucky having found Leonelle’s book when I did. I’ve just started writing so I have no ingrained habits yet, which means I can focus on dictation from the outset. My software arrives today 😊

I immediately got Nuance Dragon after watching this yesterday. I'm excited to jump into it today! Hopefully it'll help with my NaNo next month :)

Thank you! I just finished my first day using dictation and my average WPH is almost the same as typing. Since I'm so new to Dragon, I can't wait to see my WPH improvement at the end of the month!

I used to dictate in a previous job and I tried to use the google docs built in, but couldn't work out what was used for speech marks.. .will try 'open quote' now... and if that doesn't work, it works well for brainstorming and thinking out loud, too.
    thanks!

Good Day Joanna. I regularly follow your audios and videos for Scrivener and Writing. I watched this video recently and can help but appreciate when I see how far-sighted you are. You did this video on dictation years back.
Me being interested in technology for a long time, I regularly invest in new, practically useful and inexpensive technology as I am fascinated by it. This technology of dictation has grown in leaps and bounds growing exponentially over the years. (I even bought a software for dictation - IBM Via Voice during 2003-2004). The growth in this technology has earned a lot of value and is available today if you are willing to part with a very very small value. Carrying this further, it is now available in Windows as 'Voice Typing' (Windows Key + H)

Thanks, and yes, dictation these days is super easy with all the tools and AI transcription available.
I don't dictate much these days, but I am using Claude and other AI tools as part of my creative process, as covered elsewhere. www.thecreativepenn.com/future/

When I hear people talking about dictating 3k words per hour, it makes me wonder - why? If you're actually writing 3k quality words per hour, you'd be writing multiple books per month. I can type >100 words per minute, and yes I can speak faster than that, but it's not the typing that slows me down. Does anyone just write a book in stream of consciousness? I guess I just don't understand why some writers find dictation so much more productive than drafting.

I'm writing my first draft in a stream of consciousness

I wonder about a lot of these dictation speeds. Are they actual or estimates? 88 words a minute equals 5,000 words an hour, but I'm not talking at that pace for an hour. I use Apple Dictate to transcribe and it needs silence to work. And I need time to think. But, if you don't count all the points where I'm not talking, then my dictation would seem higher than my real output, which is about 3k words an hour. 3k's only 50 wpm--really 90 wpm bursts followed by silence--and that's quite doable.
I use a digital voice recorder, so one of the main benefits is getting away from the computer. I can't edit as I write because I can't see what I've written. All I can do is move forward. In that way, it does tend to be more non-stop. And I only write for between 8 to 15-minute sprints. So I'm usually trying to fit everything into that time, and that keeps me moving forward.
So, the last necessary element is either being a good pantser or having an outline. If someone's a good pantser, that's great. But I'm not, so I focused on learning to outline.
