@@chipperjaunte Naas always says that you shouldn't go against history. Look at our history and World Cup history. How many test series against the Lions and World Cups have been won by a deadly goalkicker?
In ten World Cup finals only 19 tries have been scored. That means 71% off all points scored in World Cup finals are from the kicking tee. That makes it very obvious that having a reliable goalkicker in a World Cup final is extremely important if not the most important.

    • @wlk2408

You make a very good point. We forget how detailed these gameplans are.
I have seen one page from an u20 Springboks gamebook. The detail was unbelievable and nothing is left up to the player to decide what he is going to do. Everybody in the team knows exactly what the ball carrier is going to do so they can react faster.
Roos didn't shine at the Sharks, moved and became URC player of tbe year. Libbok played at the Bulls and Sharks, wasn't very impressive, moved and became a Springbok. It happens to many players, if not the majority.
Pollard dominated the 2019 World Cup final. He managed the game perfectly. The most points scored in a World Cup final is 35 and we scored 32, the third most in history. Still it wasn't good enough for some. Nothing except history making and world record breaking is acceptable for some. It is insanity to argue like that.
I believe Pollard can play an attacking game. People forget, Pollard is a very attacking player. Rassie changed the gameplan right when Pollard got injured. I honestly believe had Pollard not got injured Manie never would have taken over as first choice.

The series CLEARLY was recorded prior to Pollard winning the '23 RWC in the knock out rounds for Rassie. 😅 I love Mannie but never understood what he means by "if Mannie is kicking well then he's excellent" well, if Pollards kicking well he's also excellent. The MAIN differences between the two players can be brought back to Stormers vs La Rochaile last weekend. Pollard wins it when it matters.

Coming from the Eastern Cape, we love running rugby, running flyhalves, a step, dummy and flair. During 80 minutes of rugby you aren't sure how many penalties can come your way but when you have a baller you stand a better chance of creating more. Perhaps the analysis should look to how many tries and backline chances either flyhalf creates because truth be told, we all love tries more than penalties. What I would like to see is a similar thing that used to happen during the Boks in the 95 and post era where Stransky was the flyhalf and Hennie le Roux along with Andre Joubert also got into the kicking.
At the 2019 RWC Pollard would slot in at 12 in the games against lower quality opposition while Jantjies ran the line. I liked what he offered, but in bigger tests we don't play Handre there because we use the inside centre as "gatecrasher" rather than a space creator. Imagine when you can mix it up, during a play or at particular scrums in different parts of the pitch for different effect. Mannie is way more unpredictable vs Pollard in open play. Handre is like having an Old Mutual policy when it comes to the tee. I know its going to cash out when I need it. Going forward, if we can get more experience into Willemse (kicking included), rotation in the same match between Pollard and Libbok you have three flyhalves that change or enhance the game for us is ways beyond comprehension, all can be 10's and then somewhere else.
Handre and Manie's rugby DNA is cut from different cloth's from different regions and differed styles and different mindsets. There were times when Manie, with the arsenal at his disposal made our backline look like it could be better than the All Blacks, we just haven't been blessed with running 10's ever and we don't know how to see that and appreciate at Springbok level.
What Rassie did by not playing Manie in the final was genius because he saved him from expectation and potential confidence destruction, and to give him another 4 years to be that other difference we are going to need as teams believe they figure us out as we chase the sun for the third time (Hopefully Eskom will keep us in the sun then). That All Black attack coach is going to "mildly" touch himself when he starts humming with the crazy talent we have back there, and his running rugby ideas will flow more naturally with Manie than Handre.
Natural rhythm is a dancer, that is Manie's massive asset over Handre. It allows him to "remix" on the spot. They said Campese could step, you can take his best stepping clips (excluding tries) and compare vs any of the following boks, Kolbe, Paulse, Habana, Moodie, Arendse, Mapimpi and Dyantyi and see what I mean. If Grant Williams evolves to the next 9 for 2027, he is going to need a good dance partner next to him. My 5cents.

    • @johnjames6620
      @johnjames6620 Před 2 měsíci

The way SA plays, the one thing that you do know or at least expect is to get quite a few penalties. Our game is framed on exerting pressure on the opposition and that is why we are comfortable playing without the ball. There is always going to be a few infringements by the opposition, not to mention possible scrum penalties.
Stated differently, you know against good opposition that you likely to get far more penalty opportunities than decisive try opportunities. The reality is that 4 penalties (or whatever the number that was missed in the Ireland game) is worth more than 2 tries that are not converted.
In order to score a try, the flyhalf is only 1 piece in a complex puzzle and where it is normal for one of the pieces in the puzzle to fail, so the role of the flyhalf with try scoring is somewhat diminished. The same does not apply with kicking for goals or touch, where the flyhalf is the only cog in the wheel.

@@johnjames6620 very true John, forgive me for my forward looking perspective because the pressure is always going to be a part of it, I did say that for 2027 it is going to be a difference. As you do state, "the pressure" and physicality has been been the bread and butter of the Boks DNA and is nothing new now to world rugby now. Its always guaranteed, always present and always expected. I was looking towards how we evolve and that greater use of the backs is pretty much the final frontier to a complete play of rugby for us. When the laws try to cancel legal use and genetic advantages our team has, we have to look to what we have, and is not as exquisitely used as the mankrag we posses. Pressure can be countered if you know how to, we just haven't been beat yet. In the way that our defense is so strong that we can get up and grab a beer while defending in our 22 or 5 yard line more than we could before. Cheers man.

In my opinion, Pollard is the better fly half. His overall game is very solid and his shots at goal is way better than Libbok. The other aspect where Pollard exceeds Libbok, is the line kicks. Libbok hardly reach 25 meters, where Pollard easily do 45 meters plus. In conclusion, I have to say that playing as a forward in my day, there is nothing more demotivating as a goal kicker missing constantly after hard grinding work up front. The players need to be confident that their goal kicker wil put the points on the board when it is there for the taking. Not having to make a circle and hope and pray he gets it over. But if Libbok can really work on his goal kicking, he will be a good fly half to take over from Pollard one day.
