  • I play a Magic the Gathering Online Modern league with Ruby Storm, a deck from Patreon subscriber Alphasteel. Ruby Storm has been a standing Legacy fringe player for years, and Modern Horizons 3 brought basically the entire engine into Modern. Reducing the cost of Rituals makes more mana, reducing the cost of Wrenn's Resolve-style "bottling" effects gets you more cards for cheap, it doesn't take much to reach critical mass and win the game on turn 3. With Ral, Monsoon Mage also from MH3, we actually got TWO Ruby Medallion effects from this set! GOATs Jon Finkel, Kai Budde, and Luis Scott-Vargas all chose this deck at PT Amsterdam, it must be legit. Legacy comes to Modern! MTG MH3

    I believe that you're often supposed to keep declining Ral's flip until you can ultimate it.

      Only reasons to flip early are if you need his -2 or your life total matters, right? Even having two Ral's, you still would want to wait for the ultimate before playing the first?

    • @aelinstue9431
      @aelinstue9431 Před 28 dny +5

      Yeah I couldn't understand why you'd flip just to waste his use to have the same mana reduction but now require a second Ral to get to the ultimate.

    Another pro tip, wish -> grapeshot with storm around ~10 and then past in flames to grape shot again is a good quick finisher without needing to hit~18-20 storm. Also as other's have said, Warrens + alchemists gambit does get around ring protection. Even just Warrens for like 6-10 goblins is no joke as a nice value storm turn.

  • @astronautlevel
    @astronautlevel Před 28 dny +45

    Minor comment for round 4 - you can actually win through the one ring using Alchemist's Gambit, because gambit says that damage cannot be prevented on the extra turn. This is the primary reason why gambit is in the sideboard.

      You also had a pretty big swing for a turn two in that game before they one rings if you wanted it. Ritual into Ral leaves you with a mana with two more rituals and a glimpse. I don’t think it’s correct to take that swing with that little information, but just letting others viewers know that that line exists.

      @@Cowter4also just playing a huge empty and just passing the turn should be okay right? He seemed very hellbent on finishing off his opponent instantly when you can just put 10 or more tokens into play that do the job over 2 or 3 turns.

    fwiw you rarely want to flip ral before he's able to ultimate, because flipping and then unticking doesn't actually change how much your spells cost, so you might as well just keep the creature that does it and retain the option of flipping and ultimating later

    I feel like you made a major mistake in R1G3. In Mono Red, keeping a one land hand is not as advisable as it was in UR Storm, since the deck has zero cantrips to get you lands. It's high risk, even though it worked out. This deck is a lot more powerful than I first gave credit to, since we don't have Seething Song and Rite of Flame. This proves that returning Rite of Flame to the format is not good (as some people had previously been discussing that it can come off banning)

    I think that Jund match demonstrates the Phlage plan being not that good. Like, a 6/6 that lightning helixes is not a bad creature, but in a format as powerful as Modern your opponent probably can deal with something like that. When your whole deck is combo cards and one real creature, your opponent essentially just has to be able to beat three copies of Phlage while their storm hate shuts out everything else, and I think it's reasonable to assume 60 cards can beat 3. Modern is not Legacy, where creature decks are so outgunned nobody prepares for them and the juke can work.

    • @greatbrandini3967
      @greatbrandini3967 Před 28 dny +2

      I would disagree with this because it used to be that creature removal would get sided out, but now that Ral is a thing, creature removal is still good against storm

    • @noesunyoutuber7680
      @noesunyoutuber7680 Před 28 dny

      @@greatbrandini3967 My thought is that even if they do go down on removal, it still doesn't matter. Opponent never really tried to kill Phlage, they just outmuscled it because their deck was dedicated to playing a combat game and their goyfs were too big for Phlage to effectively tangle with - if you're playing against a deck that's built to play the fair creatures game, you're not going to be as good at it. Against lower-to-the-ground aggro I could see a lightning helix machine doing work, but I think against those decks just going fast and working around their sideboard hate pieces would also be valid - they aren't naturally disruptive the way the Jund deck is. It's a clever idea on paper that I think doesn't actually work better than "use your sideboard to counter their sideboard."
