Buntaro went out like a straight boss. He bridaled his mortal fear and charged headlong into the enemy, Man's Man style.
He chose his own fate. He wanted to go down fighting like a boss.
Agreed…definitely not dead
Have you read the book?
@@herman888888 This isn't Game of Thrones
@@herman888888In the book, Buntaro survived. He escaped by swimming.
Marikos husband wasnt an asshole i dont think. He seems like he was just a typical Japanese husband of the time period...
I agree with you.
How do you know about typical Japanese husbands of the time period?
Perhaps as he's observed them from how they've been depicted in media and historical accounts
Blackthrone was allowed to leave because Ishido wanted to use him as a wedge between Toranaga and the other members of the council. He probably planned on the other two Christian lords to wage war against Toranaga and then he can just standby and finish off the winner. That's why in EP2 he ordered Yabushige to save Blackthrone from the execusion and deliver him to Toranaga.
7:24 ( in japanese) Torunaga: "I will do what's called a pro-gamer move and make Blackthorn clean himself."
I didn't even think of that. Boy doesn't want to catch the flux.
@@patrickisneatI'm guessing that's the flu?
@@scottmcley5111 dysentery. if you think about it, anything in England will cause dysentery.
The episodes get better better and better as they go along third episode very good. I really enjoyed it the brutal moments are 👌👌
I might just be me but i thought he made Blackthorne dive so many time so he eouod be tired for the race. Another demonstration of his strategic mind.
I think it’s possible
Yeah he's not dead he's going to come back later after Anjin hooks up with Mariko that's why they had him walk off screen rather than see him fall. Easiest read of my life
Yep
@@SmokeScreenVids I don't disagree, but this show also doesn't shy away from off-screen deaths.
This episode was great, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I can't wait for episode 4!
Great review! I’m a new subscriber and was waiting for this to drop. Well done
Welcome and thank you!
Watched this episode 3 times already.
I can’t wait to see it then I’ll be back for your brilliant review
Thanks for picking up Shógun. Great analysis.
My pleasure!
This was great! Keep em' coming.
Thanks! Will do!
I think it’s quite likely that Toda is still alive. He’ll probably turn up right when John and Mariko get together
I agree
As they are pillowing each other
Excellent episode!
Love your reviews!
That belly flop at the end was brutal😅
Exactly
Thanks for the review SS
Youre always my next stop after SHOGUN ep. Holler from Manila!
Glad you enjoy! Thanks!
Thank you for pronouncing Shogun correctly!!
I am loving this. Those Samurai’s don’t play man🔥💪🏾
Nice tip of the hat to the Naginata by Blackthorn and the translator.
I love this show
AWESOME!!!
In real history,Toda Hirokatsu existed as Honda Tadakatsu served for Tokugawa Ieyasu. He was never injured even over 60 times battle in his life .He is famous as a master of spear.
The heart of a warrior.
they never showed Buntaro die 🤔
True
May have been sword or spear (naginata or yari) related?
i think that logic only works in anime.
@@m33p0 we shall see my friend
He'd have to be Musashi on steroids to make it outta there. If he does make it than how inept are Ishido's men?.
Why is it possible to have a mini player from this video outside CZcams in Android? Didn't know it was possible.
Nice action
Buntaro isn’t dead. In the superbowl trailer he is shooting an arrow at Miriko and he has scars on his face.
Yeah, didn’t see him die
Spoiler
😡 keep your hole shut 😡🔥
It’s not a spoiler. It’s literally in a promotional trailer for all to see.
@@elnorakelly16 never seen it
Watched it twice. I can’t remember this in the book but it was a great episode. You’re right about the way they wrote Buntaro appearing like a jerk so he would go out like a badass and we learn another piece of their culture and that everything is about the reverence of respect. Great review Chris.
I think he’s alive
@@SmokeScreenVids omg really? That would be a great twist
Finally someone who can pronounce "Shogun" correctly lol
I’m a huge fan since the 80s version but I don’t recall in the 80s version John blackthorn being called HATAMOTO? He was just called Angin-San, am I wrong?
I can’t honestly remember either, but real history he was.
Hatamoto is a name for position or a person in that position, meaning vassal, directly waiting on Shogun.
Worlds shortest redemption arc for the samurai. 😂
If you read the book closely, Buntaro, Mariko's husband, was known for being a real asshole to everyone, especially to his wife. I would have to find and get my book out to say why for sure but I believe that he had a bad case of venereal disease which soured his disposition.
🔥 🔥
0:22 does any one know the name of those oil lamps shaped like a bowl on top of a stick, or if that's historically accurate during that time period?.
Toro I think
It's called Tomyo (灯明). Toro (灯篭) is usually made of stone and placed outside. Andon (行灯) is a lighting with paper shades surrounding a flame. 👍
I think it's called TAIMATSU.
@@mamorintan Taimatsu (松明) is a torch.
This drama correctly represents Japanese culture. Past Hollywood productions were terrible...for example, Last Samurai. The scene where Tom Cruise meets the Emperor was shot in a small temple. However, the Emperor's castle at that time was the second largest in the world in history. Photographing a gigantic 8000ha castle at a small temple...
from japan😊🙏
It's really good, and glad they made it so authentic.
I may not be remembering this correctly, but I recall that in the original Shogun series from the 1980s, Mariko's husband, while drunk, demonstrated remarkable archery skills by hitting a target without seeing it. Is this correct? If so then of course that scene will not be repeated in this series.
I think he survived
Great show but some of the camerawork is strange. Sometimes the target of the scene is out of focus. It’s very distracting
When a side character was the total boss of the episode.
Don't know if he's dead yet they never showed the body
He’s not
Smoke and a pancake.. 🍻
Why did Kuriyama and his general say "Are they fighting eachother?" and "Something isn't right" during the ambush? Was it because some of their men didn't want to kill another lord?
Cause Ishido men were “escorting”them and saw Toranago was actually there. They didn’t want him to escape. While Kiyama was after Blackthorne. Once they saw Toranaga they attacked him while being attacked.
I bet he lets Toranaga win
Not Toranaga's wife it's the Taiko's wife.
Yeah, Toranaga's wife is Kiri, did I say someone else?
@@SmokeScreenVids I thought you were saying Toranaga replaced his own wife in the wooden thing they were carrying. He replaced the Taikos wife.
He doesn't say "catholic church" just "church"
He doesn’t really know the difference yet, I mean he heard Protestant from Blackthorne but I wouldn’t doubt Blackthorne stepping in and building a Protestant one lol.
Shouldnt episode 4 come out yesterday....
Tonight at midnight
After finishing 3 episodes, I am definitely favoring the original 80's version. I thought maybe I would feel more immersed in the Japanese world in this version, since the production values have increased. But this is not the case. It may have something to do with filming in Japan for the original. But beyond that, the editing, as in scene pacing, is a little twitchy for my taste. Scenes transition quicker than an anime movie sometimes, with little chance for reflection. I am glad to revisit this world with a fresh coat of paint however, even if it's for nostalgic reasons.
I will say the 2nd viewing is much better. You catch more little moments and dialogue.
@@SmokeScreenVidsI'm enjoying the history but the dialogue is so cringe at times. It's very flaky and obvious to me that it has become a distraction from the great acting.
S...S!!!!!
