Other youtubers: drafts patterns meticulously based on many years of experience in dressmaking.
The Stitchery: ties a measuring tape to her head and communes with the sewing goddesses before drafting a pattern chaotically.
As a viewer of youtube, the latter is just a treat to witness. You're such a kid at heart and I am all here for it!
She's basically draping on herself and I love it.
Also all pattern making is controlled chaos, not matter how nicely and calmly they edit it.

You should check out Micarah Tewers! She has similar chaotic sewing energy. She usually explains all her measurements by animals and they’re hilariously nonsensical, like “cut a piece of the lining which is the length of 3 small cats and the width of one very big cat”
This made me giggle. It is kinda the way I roll too. And seeing it gives me the confidence to not give a hoot and just try!
Holy crap, can you imagine an ivory or cream version of this as a wedding dress? Putting this away in the ideas bank in case i ever get married...

Brilliant idea. I just uncovered a stash of old white linen napkins. They're really beautiful with interesting weaves. They would be fabulous patch worked into a wedding dress.

I'm a great believer in making a wedding dress that becomes a lovely evening gown/dinner dress afterwards.

I've never made a quilt in my life, but I love my rotary cutter, rulers, and mats!! ❤❤ I don't recall if I got mine before or because of this particular project, but I had to make 2 dresses for my oldest daughter for a trip, and I had 4 days to do it in. Mind you, I had 5 children at home at the time, we home schooled, and I cooked our meals. So I didn't have a lot of time. I chose one pattern, and two fabrics that were ok with one thread color for the two of them. I did everything twice: each instruction on the pattern was done for dress 1, then dress 2. But cutting them both out at the same time with my rotary cutter saved SO MUCH TIME! It ran through 4 layers of fabric and the pattern like it was nothing, and I was sold from then on. I wasn't always able to sew with the same color thread, but I often saved time making two of things by cutting both out at once.
I cried a little when she said it took 4 hours to cut the squares!! 😭

When she said, "There has to be an easier way...". I was saying, "Yes, it's called a rotary cutter and a self healing mat!" And I don't even quilt.
I watched her do that with my jaw open and asked why are you not using a rotary?!

I have a vintage one in the same style. Its called a 'swing skirt' or a 'salsa skirt' its for dancing and twirling without showing your underbritches. My hem is only 40 but yeah. Its a going out dress from the 40s. But yours is PRETTY!!!

the sweep of the first tier of the skirt being as narrow as it is compared to the bottom tier is what makes the skirt so gosh darn flattering (in my humble opinion). what a great dress--epic! i'd wear it every day and find moar fields to frolic in!!
The “okay…okay okay i know what the plan is…okay” and the gesturing shapes in the air is SO REAL. Also the final result is BEAUTIFUL
As someone with diagnosed ADHD and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), I love every ASD/ADHD moment (ie. zoning out, "Why is this such a mess?", the figgiting, "there's always a box somewhere around here", at around the 15:00 throwing the fabric in the air then saying "here we go", last and my favorite example I will give begins at 15:55). This is all stuff I do in any craft project. I love all of this, also I love that you take your time making it and giving yourself a set scheduled time slot for things to do!

slap on a work apron, a witchy hat, and a bunch satchels filled with bits and bobs and you have a renfaire ready patch work witch! I love this! such a fun use of fat quarters. I've always been curious about what clothes made out of quilts might look like and this is a fantastic example of it done sooooo right!!
Yep. Add a rotary mat, cutter, and ruler to your “need” list. Then you can cut multiple layers at the same time.

A way to make sewing the squares together faster is to sew strips together, then subcut it into rectangles. There are a lot of cutting tricks quilters have to maximize sewing time versus cutting time.

Yes, if you're doing a regular pattern, sewing strips is a must! Most of my quilts have no repetition in them, so I rarely get a chance to use this trick, but I did a baby quilt that used several different repeated stripe blocks cut on the bias and it was SOOOO FAST in comparison 😂 I also wasn't spending a bunch of time laying out individual rows piece by piece to get _just_ the right color gradation… 😅

I spent 26 years pattern cutting and you are pretty much doing what we all do. A combination of flat and stand (your body) cutting. Your experience shows. I love the part of the process when you close your eyes and visualise the 2D/3D shapes come together.

The dress is stunning and reminiscent of the 1970's! It turned out wonderfully.
When you are gathering super long things you can zigzag over a crochet cotton. It's stronger so it holds up better. If you get a bit of the cotton in the zigzag stitching you can just start another pull of the thread. It gathers faster as there's no real tension to fight.
Thanks for the birds update. I have found that doves are very weird and not blessed with intelligence. In the last week I've had to break so as not hit them standing in the road watching my car come towards them!! To say nothing of their lack of nest building skills. Couple of years ago they decided that my roof gutter was a great spot. It didn't go well. It truly is a wonder that they survive.

I decided to follow you after watching 10 minutes of your chaos gremlin energy. I thought, "yes, I understand." And now I'm going to finish watching the video.
I make tiered patchwork dresses for my daughters, they love them and love spinning in them! I ended up making myself a christmas themed one and its so lovely! I have piles of squares now because I wanted make a bunch of different themed ones (I work with kids and have visions of a Miss Frizzle style work wardrobe) and then lost my mojo for the project, so there it sits waiting for inspiration to strike! This dress is so beautiful I think I am nearly ready to tackle it again!

Amasing! I like the way the first tier was not as full as you feel it should be, because it adds a style and a shape to the skirt. Having all the extra fullness lower down the skirt is lovely. Love how it moves. Gorgeous.
That was one hell of a undertaking. I'm a tailor of over 30 yrs and even I am very impressed with the work that went into that. 😉👍It turned out really lovely. The color scheme is great and the designs were not ott or gauche. Well done.💕

How gorgeous is this! I'm so trying not to be inspired, I don't have the bandwidth to take on such a large project right now. My mom is a quilter - she would have stacked the fabrics and rotary cut the squares. Haha all good, that's a great suggestion! I got a steamer a few months back, and yeah, I would definitely use that over an iron on any giant dress.

I'd love a pattern just for the skirt, I think every woman deserves a skirt like this once in their life. As a child I remember having a really oversized circle skirt that cinched in the waist. I was addicted to twirling in it.
I'm currently making a flatlined midbust corset out of many fabric squares (and three different colors/prints), and it has made me fall in love with using fabric squares. And cotton, cotton is a miracle when you're used to working with stretchy fabrics.
I live about 1 hour away from the supermarket, so that sure helps you to overcome cravings and being pre-organised. But when you're not it's a total bummer. The colours you chose are gorgeous 🥰

If you ever do more quilting, get yourself a rotary cutter and a big mat and ruler! So much faster than scissors. (and also fun, sharp circley thingy go WHEEEEE!)

And i think you should relax about not showing your patternmaking because of amount of mistakes you make) at this level of mastery it is absolutely common and even expected of you :)
I'd suggest you not to behave as a professional seamstress with lots of experience who makes a good patterns and video tutorials if you're not feeling you are one. and instead just do your thing) take it easy) do, what makes you want to sew more, don't read to the comments that make you feel bad and be yourself)

I'm currently making my first patchwork quilt project (I usually do needlework and garment sewing) and bought my first rotary cutter and square ruler and it CHANGED my outlook on cutting pieces.

My grandma would use exclusively quarted fabrics for her projects. She liked making pillows and quilts and pictures in the quilts with the fabrics. I have her entire stash now.

You need to invest in a self healing mat with measurements and a rotary cutter, you can cut several pieces of fabric at once. 14:07

Your dress turned out really cute. It must weigh 10 pounds. I learn to sew when I was probably 10 years old from my mother and grandmother. Sewing is my therapy. During Covid I learn to make quilts. Even when I made clothes for myselves. I never altered the patterns, even though I needed to sometimes. Maybe now in my old age, I might have the patience to do that. But I know absolutely nothing about making a pattern. In the past I have read books. But with my dyslexia, it’s very difficult for me.
Have you seen Morgan Donner? She does a lot of history bound clothes making her own patterns. She has experimented with different backgrounds shapes too - rectangles, circles, tailored. Watching her doing rather than reading might help you get your head around it. It's the process, not the style that's relevant.
Note to self, buy a ruffled, rotary cutter and mat. Add a couple of rulers and maybe a serger. Beautiful dress!

It turned out soooo pretty!!! I've always wanted to make a patchwork dress, but my family has told me it'd look bad.
Once i finish the 50s shirt I'm working on I'll go for it! There's a quilting shop in the city owned by an old lady. She only hires other older women and the vibes are great. She has a whole section of quarter stacks in black and every time i go there I stare at them so much.
I think patchwork - either skirt, dress, or shirt - would look striking in black with different white designs, broken up by just enough of your other favorite color(s) to make your heart happy. Black / purple / chartreuse would give excellent Maleficent vibes! Or dashes of red for a Night Circus effect! Or galaxy because galaxies are gorgeous and it's an excuse for glitter thread accents... the possibilities... dang it. Now I need something like this for spoopy season. 🤦🏻♀️😆
I don't know how they would play on the bias (I'm a newbie to sewing) but I could totally see that with the squares in more of a diamond orientation
@@annikahstebben4425 I see two options for this.
Cutting the squares with the grain would make the seams easier but then having the squares on the diagonal would have the bias running vertically and horizontally. I think the skirt would stretch too much over time.
Cutting the squares on the diagonal would mean needing to be careful with the bias seams. However, then when the squares are turned on point, the grain will run vertically and horizontally. I think that would be much easier to gather and the skirt would hang and wear well without stretching.

Re: compromising the number of tiers , you have the solid purple. On the last version you were only short a few squares. You could incorporate the purple fabric for that handful of squares. It wouldn’t look like a compromise. It wouldn’t even register as something off. If you wanted, you could Stitch lines into them with brightly colored thread, making it look like another striped fabric.

Are you going to put your patchwork sun dress in some of the quilt shows? Most of the Quilt Shows do have Wearable Art (which is usually jackets, hats, aprons, skirts, bags, and coats) in their shows. Yes, your dress is Wearable Art. It is a beautiful dress on you. It does remind me of the dresses that old ladies use to make for dolls (that were sat in the middle of a double bed with the full circle skirt spread out around it). I'm worried about washing, drying, and ironing it (to use again). That looked like quilting cotton you used. Did you wash your fabric before pressing and cutting?
I hadn't thought of submitting it to a quilting show, but I'll have to look into it!
I did not pre-wash my fabric, which I realize is a major *gasp* to most. XD I honestly didn't even think about it on this project, but I'm not super concerned about the shrinkage since the dress is so adjustable.
@@gettheetothestitcheryI don't prewash either, especially not fat quarters, due to excessive thread unraveling on the cut edges. If you used steam or spray bottle when you ironed, that may have already partially shrunk the fabric.

Don’t stress about making lists of steps to be done. Making checklists is how planes don’t crash! Pilots have checklists for everything. It means they can move between different airlines, different countries - standardisation saves the day.
