Fix itouchless trashcan lid?

itouchless 13 gallon trashcan lid continuously breaks - I have been through at least half a dozen of these. I finally took two broken ones apart to try to see what was happening, and it turns out it’s a small plastic part where the lid attaches to a metal bar attached to the gear mechanism. This small plastic part is a weak point in the design, and once broken, the gear cannot lift the trashcan lid as it is no longer connected.

Also I forgot to mention in this video that I took apart another one of the itouchless lids and the same plastic piece was also broken on that one. This is clearly a weak point in the design of the itouchless trashcan lid, which is otherwise a great trashcan.
