  • A true American time capsule. Owned by a famous craftsman who’s furniture you can find in museums today. The home was built in 1775 and last occupied in the 1970s. Each room of this magnificent home has a story to tell on its own even with just the furniture alone. Ever since the home was built it was passed down many generations. Each family member was very Artistic and talented in their own way weather it be music, art, or craftsmanship. When the home was last inhabited they had a problem with hoarding animals especially cats. The home was later condemned and left to rot with everything inside including what I believe to be over one million dollars of antiques and even hand written letters dating back as far as 1861. This home should be a museum. Let’s explore and see what else there is to discover.

    My genealogist heart breaks for all the history just sitting there rotting. There are groups dedicated to hooking people up with photos, family bibles and more. It's so sad this isn't being shared. Even sadder if there is living family that just don't care.

    #1 Did you notice the flag only had 45 stars. It makes it a real old flag.
    #2 The old bible is called a family Bible. They were gifted to newly weds as wedding presents so they could record everything from births to deaths and all in between. That started before paper records were kept.
    #3 The square grand is actually the size of a standard Grand only turned sideways. If you noticed the keyboard was at the end instead of the middle. That was to accommodate the harp board inside. They were built for wealth families so they could have the big sound inside of a smaller room. A friend of mine had a baby square in her home. It was half the size of the one in this video. The carving on this one is mind blowing.
    Thank you for another fantastic video. It definitely needs to be made a museum before it falls apart or someone helps it fall.

    The square piano's were made in the mid to late 19th century.They were often referred as "coffin pianos," because when they were closed they looked like coffins. This specific Rococo Victorian style piano made by Henry F. Miller was one of the finest of the old Boston manufacturers. If this was restored this piano because of the superior craftsmanship could go for almost $30-$50,000.00. This wood looks like it's Brazilian Rosewood. This piano is around the 1880's to late 1880's.

Sometimes funds run out for the operation of such places. Quite tragic if it goes to waste! ❤ The hooks would've been for candle chandeliers rather than electric lights. Quite nice! And something I just recently learned - if it's a bullet in a casing that hasn't been fired, it's called a "cartridge". The "bullet" is what comes out of the gun when you fire it. Magnificent old house. You say it was last occupied in the 70's - seems like it would have been very dated to live there then. Looks like the floors were painted which I think was common at one time. Also with all the furniture against the walls, another thing that would date it and I've seen the beds angled in the corner in other old houses. The kitchen doesn't look like you could be cooking, etc, much from maybe 1930's up to when last occupied. I love all the old books and the old trunks (I have one that was my grandmothers and I slept in her old brass bed til a weld broke several years ago). I have to ask was there no bathroom? I would have to spend a day, maybe 2, just taking it all in. Did you happen to look in the very front of the Bible? In old ones like that there was probably some family history (I had one that was my husbands grandmothers and it had all the family listed in it). Love your enthusiasm!!!! Best one I've seen.

      That old square grand is probably worth a fortune. It is a shame someone can't get it and clean it up and tune it. I am a pianist and kept wanting him to play a note to see if it still works. Of course, temperature changes would make it horribly out of tune and likely mice have eaten away the inside of the piano making it unplayable. I visited an old mansion in the south that is cared for and they have a very rare piano that is worth 2 million dollars! The frame is in excellent condition, but many keys are broken. They would not let me play it. ):

Unfortunately my mom keeps telling me antiques aren't as valuable any more because most younger people(unlike you!) do not find value in them anymore. But there are some beautiful pieces in this house! The piano is gorgeous! The salt and pepper thing is called a cruet set. They kept salt and pepper in it as well as oil and vinegar in the other jars. My mom has had a couple over the years. The tables that fold down like that are called drop leaf tables! Thanks for sharing it with us!

    Hello fellas, good video as always. I'm an antique buff so here goes...Is the furniture worth millions? No. The square grand could be worth a lot only after an expensive restoration. The deer head buffet is valuable, and the long couch in the main parlor is an American Empire Swans neck piece that is highly collectable. Most of the other pieces are pretty standard for the time and not really that valuable. However in the main parlor it looks like one or two of the painted portraits might be colonial primitive (I can't really tell) and these might really be worth something. To me the most valuable thing is the intact colonial stairway.
    Again, I always admire your excitement and zeal.
    Thanks!

    I seen one of these pianos in a ranch house in NV. They were part of my family until divorce came into the picture. Their square piano was a lighter wood, still gorgeous. My daughter has my Mom's 1924 upright piano right here setting next to me I play it too.Not at all as my mother always said she could've been a concert pianist, she being very accomplished in classical pieces, very difficult ones of Chpins'. Now I wished I would've practised, I grew up with a piano teacher right in my house, my dear departed mother. Bless her sweet heart.😢😢😞😞💝💝💖💖😘😘🐑🐑🕊🕊

    Great video, another property that breaks my heart that there aren't any relatives to claim their belongings. The rugs on the wall I believe are just wall art, I don't believe they were rug makers, a lot of times people would use the rug or macrame as wall art.

    • @kdfree91
      @kdfree91 Před 2 lety +9

      I was thinking the same thing, about how that doesn't seem to look like a house that's been overrun by cats. There would be fecal matter everywhere, as well as damage to the flooring.

    • @SoulofAlice
      @SoulofAlice Před rokem +1

      I also thought that. It's often commented in your videos when something smells like urine or rot, animals, etc...
      If a home such as this were condemned for cats, there is no way anything could escape the scent. Even if you professionally steam treated, you would still have that scent. And those precious items would not survive such harsh cleaning. Or from my experience with my cats, once you know, you KNOW. So, I think surely there must be some confusion. It would be a travesty as well in this case especially.

    First, I am so glad you appreciate the contents of homes like this and film things respectfully.
    Holy cow! This place is a museum. I recognized some old china patterns, some depression glass, a spindle bed, a kitchen\Hoosier cabinet, and other items. The square grand piano, the old flag, and the sideboard with the deer head and marble top were amazing. The family Bible was, too. Usually on the first few pages in the Bible were pages to record births, weddings, and deaths. That would have given you information on the family members. My brother has my grandfather's with entries dating back to 1900.
    Thank you so much for these videos. They are small history lessons and I am really enjoying them.

    Someone must have been looking after this home since the 1970's, because it is not as decayed as one might expect for over 50 years without any occupants. It is worth trying to trace any family members who might be interested in turning it into a museum.
