  • This is my Simplicity LA walk behind tractor with a front and rear set of cultivators. I'm not sure if you can use both at the same time, would be neat to be able to.

Hi. Your tires and wheels are in nice condition. I’ve never seen a front cultivator, but I wouldn’t think that you’d use a front and a rear together. I’ve got a 1958 LA with the original 7 1/4 hp engine and a Model W also with original engine. Both run quite well. I’ve got the W set up with a 4 foot push plow blade from a sit down tractor. It has dual wheels and three sets of weights on each side. A 50lb inside the inner wheel, a 50lb between the wheels, and a rounded 75lb on the outside of the outer wheel. 175lbs of weights plus the weight of two wheels and tires on each side. Started out with one set of wheels and weights, but wheel spin was too bad to effectively push the 4 foot plow. Now it pushes like a monster. Used it to spread 450 yards of loam and about 200 yards of wood chips. I’ve got a small and large snowblower, a small and large rototiller, a reel mower, a rear cultivator like yours, and a rear moldboard plow. I use the rear plow at times, but you’ve got to have arms like a gorilla if you want it to plow deep and straight. When I’ve seen videos of people using the rear plow, they’re only going about 3 inches deep. I don’t consider that worth the trouble as I have two 16hp Baretto hydraulic rototillers. I’d really like to sell all of the attachments except the front and rear plows.

I know this is an old video but I just pulled my grandpa's from the forties after he got back from WWII out and I'm rebuilding it right now

Thanks for viewing and commenting. I wish you well bringing it back to life. I still have several different Simplicity walkbehinds and one David Bradley

nice to see someone fixing one up, I have 3 or so, and a company cataloged, I think there was a 2hp with just the step pulleys, a 2.5hp with gearbox and step pulley and a 5hp with just gear box, tires were usually 4x12, 5x12 and 6x12 respectively. any questions i'll dig out my book.

I just got one of my sickle mower attachments working a couple weeks ago on this walkbehind tractor. I put a new harbor frieght 6hp engine on it. Sickle worked pretty well.

It definetly looks like an FA model; the LA had a different gearbox. I have one with the rear cultivators. furrowing plows, 12" tiller, and rotary mower. My great grandfather bought ours new in 1954 and I used it to till our garden three years ago. We didn't plant the garden these past two years. Be careful with a larger engine, as the FA was only designed for 2 1/2 hp. To use the rear cultivators, you move the wheels onto the empty bar just behind the tractor wheels. This sets the depth.

Very Cool machine. I think you can use both front & rear Cultivators togeather as long as you had them lined up properly. those front ones are Very Rare.

Thanks for the comment. I thought they were rare. I haven't seen another one in person while I've seen probably a 100 of the rear cultivators in person.

Thanks for comments. It currently has about a 2.5 HP engine, maybe 4hp at the most. The shroud has been changed so don't know the exact engine model anymore.

This might actually be a model FA. The ID tag is very hard to read. It looked like LA but from what a guy emailed me and what I looked up online this might be an FA.
