@@briancastle4941 Bob & Tom wrote the verses, Jeff & George wrote the chorus. (This was the only track on the album that Roy was not a part of.)
In the 'Wilburys doc, George Harrison said this song impressed him watching Bob Dylan's process... he wrote out the whole song long hand on a single page with tiny writing that George couldn't even read, and Bob goes into the booth and sings it from that page, changing two lines in real time.
Phenomenal Talent, I bet he goes places one day ;)
As I recall it, the writing process was a co-work of Bob Dylan and Tom Petty. George Harrison said that none of the Brits in the Band understood a word of the slang expressions they both were "throwing" at each other.

Bob Dylan is the best story teller ever!
The in joke in this song is that it's filled with references to Springsteen songs: Highway 99, Mansion on the Hill, Thunder Road, Stolen Car, etc. Plus, they mention my hometown of Jersey City. The boys clearly had a ball making this record.
As a huge Springsteen fan, I got the references back in 1989.
Makes me wonder, have they ever done a reaction to an actual Springsteen song? Jungleland would be a good one.
I have known this song since it was was released and always thought that Thunder Road and Jersey was a hint to Springsteen, but didn't know the whole Song was an homage from Dylan to him.
Respectfully the Headstones did this song with an entirely different vibe that I find much more energetic and a force to be reckoned with!
Speaking of Springsteen, how about some more Bruce love on this channel? The man is a national treasure.
This is some of the most brilliant song writers and musicians known to mankind, all rolled into one little band. It may be a century before the world sees this much brilliance consolidated again...if ever.

Settle down champ. It's just an opinion. The Beatles were prolific. We still talk about them and listen to their music almost 60 years on. Suggesting that a super band made up of individuals who were amazing in their own right that lasted for 5 minutes is superior to The Beatles is quite disingenuous! @@Hexon66
This whole album is amazing. The circumstances surrounding how it came to be are so fun to hear about and you can see it all unfold in a documentary about the making of the album. All were great friends and they loved making music together.
This was a homage to Bruce Springsteen.

@@johncampbell756 It's Bob Dylan, so it's both--if he didn't admire Springsteen, he wouldn't have bothered having a little fun with his songs, or Known so many of his songs! (I'm not a Springsteen fan, so I think I'm being fair here.) Dyland told Petty he wanted to write a song about 2 characters called the Monkey Man and Tweeter, and use places mentioned in Springsteen songs--the British guys said, "We're going home, we won't be much help with this one!" (One description of the process I read in an interview, so maybe it went down that way.) I Love this song. I think Dylan really, really wanted to use that line about "I'm not fooled by Tweeter's curls." It's great, especially today, to have a fairly old song make visible a trans character, and have such background on Tweeter--going to Vietnam and surviving, finding "out the hard way nobody gives a damn," coming home and somehow ending up feeling free to fulfill what must have been a lifelong, deep desire, and was able to keep his childhood friends, but unfortunately still be mixed up with drugs. For one "story song" Dylan and Petty have fleshed out some real characters for us here. Jan, her brother the undercover cop, his feelings at the end, wow--I love this song and love that the Rob Squad loves it and talks about the music!

"Not alone anymore" is my favourite song off this album and my favourite Roy Orbison song ever.
His singing is fantastic on that track. Nobody else can sing like Roy.
Even more poignant when he died soon after this record was released!

A Canadian band covered this song and it's really good. They're called "The Headstones".
I have suggested they do it at least half a dozen times.
In the 90s, a Canadian band called Headstones covered this. It's more rocking and much faster. It's pretty cool.
They give The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald the same treatment . Throbbin' Hoods do a killer job of Sundown also.

Short story, back in 1988. My manager asked me what I wanted for grab bag Christmas, and I told her a traveling Wilburys, CD. I love when people ask me what I want for a present.😂❤ I’m very specific.
Canadian group "Headstones" did a good cover in 1994 (a faster version)of this plus Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"in 2019 .One of their own songs "Cemetery" is also a good song
Friends of mine formed a band when we were in high school back in the early 90's, they named their group Tweeter and the Monkey Men after this song. Fond memories of them playing at local bars, city celebrations and county fairs.
Bob’s story songs are the best. The crown is HURRICANE by him about fighter Ruben Carter who was falsely accused of murder and sent to jail for years. Bob’s song helped get him out. There’s a great live performance of this on video.

That's probably Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics on the keyboards in this song. The album was recorded in his home studio, much of it written at his kitchen table.

Thank you for getting to this one. I have been requesting it. Great story and great vibe from Lucky Wilbury, better known as Bob Dylan, who wrote it and sang lead. My suggestion is to do Wilbury Twist (original video) next. See how many of the guest stars you recognize knowing that the video was filmed in 1991. It's a lot of fun and all four of the remaining Wilbur's take the lead for a verse.

"Tweeter" is Bob Dylan's parody/sendup/tribute/homage to Bruce Springsteen, who was called "the new Dylan" early in his career.
Grew up in the 80s and 90s. Listening to this song on long road trips in the American West was amazing. I became very precise at rewinding my walkman because of the the Wilburys and Springsteen.
This song is like a novel in musical form.
The Traveling Wilburys were such a great amalgamation of talent, it’s so unfortunate that group never got a chance to do 5 or 6 collaborations. All the material they performed was and is so great to listen too. 😎🍺☮️
Totally agree, but it's almost a sad blessing that it was limited to 2 albums+, to maintain the legacy. Like the Gale Sayers for the music world.

YESS! I requested this song 4 or 5 times (more than any other song) so “Jay and Amber” (a Huge thank you 😊 goes out from This old Jersey Boy) for playing this classic that never got its due.
I use to play and sing this song in 1 of my rock bands I was in.

Has a similar lyrical vibe to Dylan's "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts" from 1975's Blood on the Tracks album...musically it's very different, that song is much faster tempo and has much different instrumentation, but the sing-songy storytelling lyrics is a hallmark of many Dylan tunes, and that was the first one I thought of when trying to think of a Dylan tune similar to Tweeter.
If you want a top notch cover of this, The Headstones do an incredible one.
Incredible song by a uber-talented super group. The whole album is incredible. Recorded in Dave Stewart's (Eurythmics guitarist & song writer) studio. This clearly makes reference to a lot of Americana and both Jeff Lynne (ELO) and George Harrison didn't really understand a lot of it. It was written by Bob Dylan with some help from Tom Petty. Don't get any more American than those two duded. RIP to George, Tom, & Roy. Just Dylan & Jeff remain. Huge loss to music is continuing to happen as these greats leave us. Behind them is not a lot of anything.
How great is that? And it should come as no surprise, these guys were the best at what they did and they worked together on these tracks, no egos here...
A group called the Headstones did a more rockin' version of this song and to this day I'm still not sure which version I like better

Love this song. It's actually pretty funny too! Most covers I've heard of it forget that part of the song.
You should definitely give the Headstone's cover of this a listen. It's much faster and so much more urgent. It's an excellent version (and the Headstones are an excellent rock band, and Canadian too!)
My kids loved this song because they got to say "hell". TW was one of our traveling CD's. Actually, cassette.
I taught my daughter to play electric guitar and she played (and sang) Green Day's "Boulavard of Broken Dreams" along with a boy (just friend) on bass and another girl on drums at the end of Year 6 and of her UK Primary School (10-11yo) . The girl on drums's Dad did the solo bits (sitting on the side of the stage to not upstage the kids). They rocked ❤. My daughter was upset that she couldn't yell out the F-word in school 😂 (we substituted 'messed'). It was a brilliant musical evening.

I love the Headstones cover of this song, rarely do I prefer a cover but in this case I think the Headstones made this song 20x better.
