I have not driven in central London for decades but I remember going westbound along Embankment in what is now the cycle lane - quite unnerving! It has taken me a minute or two to get my head around the traffic-free areas but I can see the huge benefits both for the environment and for people. I guess not all motorists would see this in the same way.

This is genuinely so lovely to hear! Thank you for sharing, it means a lot. I don’t know if this would help in your case but I really hope sooner rather than later we’ll get proper cycle infrastructure everywhere that’s wide enough for people riding recumbents out and about, and which and doesn’t require people to dismount so more people whose mobility is limited can make use of it.

I lived in London in the 90s, until 2002. I've cycled there a lot for many years. Mainly west/north London. AFAIR there were NO cycle lanes back then. London has changed a lot in the past 20-25 years. It's so amazing to see such a huge and congested city change so much towards the cyclists. Thank you for sharing this video!
BTW, I've searched for the CS3, and the Wikipedia says it's about 24 km long, but some other sources (map) shows around 14km. Maybe the map is old.

That's a long way! It won't be as nice as one of these videos the whole way, but I would aim for Colliers Wood and from there follow the A24 and then A3 over Southwark Bridge (which is all signposted as Cycle Superhighway 7). The infrastructure varies - in some places (like Balham) it's quite good with nice lanes, elsewhere you get bus lanes which aren't awful if you're reasonably confident. Once over Southwark Bridge you'll join Cycleway 3 and go east on there to pick up this video
For getting from Esher to Colliers Wood... I have no idea for Esher to Surbiton, probably the main road? Not an area I know unfortunately but if you live there you may know better than me!
But from Surbiton to Colliers Wood, you could go on the road called Surbiton Hill Park, then use the cycle path across South Park. Then use Green Lane, South Lane, Grayham Road, Elm Road... and then join the cycle path/greenway along the railway to your right (called Cycleway 31)... then there are kind of cycle paths from Taunton Avenue along Coombe Lane past Raynes Park station.
Then Kingston Road (not so good but brief), cycle path to Henfield Road, Church Lane, Sheridan Road, path to Melbourne Rd, High Path, a brief bit left up the river Wandle, then you're in Colliers Wood and can pick up Cycle Superhighway 7
It's definitely doable, although as you're probably aware, a long way!

Narrow Street is so quiet because it doesn't really connect to any other roads beyond the Limehouse Basin, all potential through routes bar one are cut off by the Limehouse Link (and the one available through route just takes you back towards the A13, which is where Narrow Street/Limehouse Causeway ultimately connects to at the Eastern end).

I go the other way every day. That part where the sewer construction is going on is dodgy. They didn't put a pedestrian walkway in and often joggers are in there, as in your vid. So they have cross the wide road to avoid it and I get why some don't. Accident waiting to happen. Coming out of Castle Baynard St I met a jolly fellow going the wrong way out of that blind corner. I have a suggestion for future videos, perhaps you could cover areas of London that will likely never have cycle infrastructure, like Bexley, Bromley, Havering, RBK&C. • @Londoncycleroutes
      @Londoncycleroutes  Před rokem +1

For Royal Docks I think your best bet is keep following CS3 eastbound instead of turning off to Canary Wharf at the shared pavement, (so use the crossing to go through Ming Street).. This sends you down Poplar High Street which isn’t great frankly but also isn’t the end of the world. (You can see it on the Barking to Bank video elsewhere on the channel, though in the westbound direction).
But then leave CS3 at the giant roundabout after Saffron Ave and use the shared pavement around it. Then there’s a pretty scrubby pavement cycle path on the southern side of Lower Lea Crossing goo.gl/maps/oAaCqSr2f79HMG7p6 last I heard there was some building work at the entrance to Royal Docks around Dock Road (which I think is the way to get in) so I’m really not sure how to get in, but you can always dismount. Unfortunately I haven’t done a video of this last bit… a few people have asked me about getting to the new City Hall and as far as I can tell it’s a right mess for cycle access at the moment. Yep great question! When the mayor started building new cycle routes in the 2010s they were originally blue but people complained about the colour as a reason to object to the cycle routes. So the next phase of routes they left the colour off to head off criticisms and make sure they got built. It’s sort of stuck since then though some local authorities use other colours - red or green are more usual elsewhere in the U.K. (and better imo). The blue was actually linked to sponsorship by Barclays Bank of the city’s cycle hire system, strangely

I love your videos and appreciate the work you have done in putting the video. However, what I am going to say next is n't pretty. At 3:53 you were fair minded and understanding about the vehicles which were unloading in the tunnel, but then at 4:16, I found your remark about the parked van highly offensive and disheartening.
Just because it is a cycle lane and it is red route, does n't mean people can't park there. That van may well have got dispensation from the Corporation of London and/or TfL. This is a work van and doing some essential work in one the buildings. They are n't there for a joy ride. Tfl charge £48 per day to get dispensation and they need six days to process the application. Sometimes, these things are unplanned emergencies (and the authorities don't respond in time to give dispensation). They get stung with silly fines, just trying to do a job. They would n't have been scorned for parking there, if the cycle lane were n't there. Someone is paying the price for cycle lanes.
All the various cycle lanes around London, are causing a great deal of inconvenience to businesses, shops, disabled..... Some businesses have lost trade, some struggling with deliveries or delays. Disabled or less mobile people can't be dropped of due to cycle lanes. Everywhere they have put cycle lanes, there is always someone paying a price and suffering or doing a work around. They may not have a voice or shout loudly about their problem, but it is something the cycling community should be sensitive to.... However, in my mind, it is deeper then this. I sense an ignorance of the working class workers who keep the city going.... The problem this is just you, but the entire cycling community who sees it that way.
Upper Thames Street was never congested until they built the cycle lane. Everyone is trying to accommodate cyclists, but it seems that cyclists are not tolerant of other roads users, who may be doing essential work.
At 4:33 you jump through a red light, meant for pedestrians to cross.

you're entitled to your opinion but I disagree with a lot of this! re: that van the access to the worksite is via trinity lane goo.gl/maps/xCXeKUynYPEAbtq18 and he didn't just park on a red route, he went through a no motor vehicles sign and no entry road markings so I'm not sure parking dispensation would have been enough (or granted). anyway I appreciate the feedback!

Just for the record - this is rubbish. I commuted on the embankment and Upper Thames St for many years on both motorbike and bicycle before the lane was put in and it has always been massively congested…and only getting worse due to the extra number of cars. Where the cycle lane in now was previously parked cars and near Big Ben, a coach park. No space was lost to cars for much of the route!

Hahaha, classic cyclist. Complaining against cars while ignoring most road signs
