I can't explain to myself why I love watching these videos so much, I don't even live in London, hell, not even in the UK. There is just something strangely relaxing yet educational about them.
@@Londoncycleroutes Not sure if you've seen the cycle counters screens that have been installed on Blackfriars Road (south bank) that tell the number of cyclists that have use the infrastructure that day!
On the stretch along the Embankment and I believe under Hungerford bridge there is a cycle counter which gives you an idea of how much that route is used. I used it a lot when I lived in Lewisham for practically any journey going west and there is always cycle traffic using it.
I started cycling about a year ago. I've lived in London for almost 20 years and I was always too afraid to cycle in London. When 2020 hit and the infrastructure started changing for the better, I eventually felt confident enough to give it a go. Now, I commute by bike every day. Thanks to your videos, I've really seen a lot of routes I might take just for the fun of it. I live in Kentish Town so if there's more routes near there you could do, it would be interesting! Thanks!
If you want a fun ride at the weekend, get the train north from Kentish Town to St Albans and then you can ride traffic free accross to Hatfield and get the train back to Kings Cross, or go even further across to Hertford, most off road or quiet streets.
@@Londoncycleroutes Just finished watching, really like the Stratford to Wanstead bit. It isn't too far from me, so I'll try going up there quite soon. Thanks again for these great videos and wishing you many congratulations on the birth of your son Jon 😊
iv been quite impressed by the amount of traffic on the roads, or the lack of traffic on the roads these days, when i was a courier driver around london(yes i was a white van man in the early 90's) it was bedlum. and it was one of the reasons i quit my courier job.
Really like these videos. As a resident of (aptly hilly) Forest Hill, the thing that has got me onto two wheels is the Lime ebikes being rolled out. Am totally not keen on cycling on main roads so these vidoes are so useful. Hopefully ebikes encourage more people not keen on traditional cycling out of their cars.
That’s great to hear and I’ve actually heard several people from south east London saying similar things now! I wish they would extend the TfL hire bikes down that way as well, the new electric ones are great and quite a bit cheaper too
i love these videos so much! i feel like since watching them a year ago i’ve become so much more comfortable on my bike and i understand london’s infrastructure so much better having only started riding 2 years ago
Shoutout @14:06 for the Tower Hill Memorial. This commemorates men and women of the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets who died in both World Wars and who have no known grave.
Do Stockwell/Camberwell/Kennington to Greenwich/Blackheath. The most straightforward way to do that route involves following the A202/A2 which is quite a dangerous road and it should be avoided by cycles. Also love the vids keep em coming!
A bit redundant now as its a year later but its much quicker going under the motorway at the Green Man roundabout coming out onto Cambridge Road which is parallel to the Eastern Avenue. Its a quiet road with green cycle lanes each way and takes you directly to Wanstead station. It completely cuts out Selsdon and Felstead Roads, to which I am aware you may of included in the video as an alternative extension to this route.
Looks like a reasonable way to do it! Maybe not quiet video quality as it’s still an A road and the lanes don’t have protection but I’d probably be happy to go that way

Interesting video! Despite living in Bromley, I’ve never cycled ‘up London’. I tend to head out into Kent and the country lanes. The only cycling infrastructure Bromley council seem to have heard of is a green-painted stripe along the gutter that is full of rocks and broken glass and stuff! One thing that did stand out for me was how flat the route seemed. Was this just the camera ‘flattening’ inclines? If I do a 15 mile ride I will have to do some fairly hefty climbs…
I don't think I've been further than Whitechaple! I've done the Thames bluelines loads, once to the end at east india dock, where I was fascinated to see creatures eat my banana in the water.... Okay I just googled as that sounded nuts, FISH EAT BANANAS :O :O :O they loved it. I've not done that connecting corner so will need to try that and reach stratford or wandsworth flats. Idea for video, list the boroughs best to worst. But given I'm in Chelsea wherever I move to will be better, but it is central and it is flat so... x
I found your channel earlier and am really enjoying the content! You also seem to know your stuff when it comes to junction geometry/infrastructure. Is that just from cycling experience or do you work for the city? I, myself, work for Transport for London as a traffic system specialist so am very familiar with alot of the cycleways and junctions in London, and it's great to see someone else who knows their stuff! Keep up the great work :)
Great video, just a quick note on the CYCLOPS junction: they don't slow down traffic because the cyclists go at the same time as the pedestrians, so when cars are already stopped for pedestrians there's no time loss.
Exactly, cars take so much space amd require so much asphalt, compared to bikes. When carrying only 1-2 people, the use of a car is not justified. And the noise..... 🙉
Thanks for another great video and congratulations on the birth of your son. Some of this route is part of my regular commute, so I have a couple of observations: - if you go left when you get to Stratford (so round past the bus station and Stratford Centre) you can avoid the awkward wiggle round Morrisons by using Grove Crescent Road and crossing onto Manbey Grove. - a big problem with CS2, especially going west, is that it floods when it rains. There are places where the whole cycleway is under water. TfL really needs to get that sorted out. And if you want to do a video going further out east to Ilford, Gants Hill and beyond, go right on Odessa Road, then left on Wooder Gardens and through the other part of the Forest Gate LTN to join up with C16 on the south side of Wanstead Flats at Capel Road.
Very good points - I’ll have to have a play around on C2 east of Stratford, I have to admit I was winging it a bit for that section and wasn’t sure which was the smoothest way to go. This all sounds sensible
Great long ride. It was like listening to a podcast. I noticed you passed several hire bikes on the C2. Could you answer a question for me? Do you know if the saddles on the hire bikes are easy to adjust? i would like to use them next time I am in the uk and wonder about getting the right fit for my short legs.
Yes, very easy! There’s a clip on the stem and you just unlock it and move the saddle up and down and then fasten the clip again. I really recommend the Boris bikes, they’re good fun and quite useful!
RANT_ON @8:02 IMHO Scooter riders are a complete menace... they never look over their shoulder so do bizarre swerves without being aware that there is someone behind them... probably because they would fall off if they looked backwards but still RANT_OFF

I really dont like CS2 as an environment to cycle along, its just a horrible road to be involved with, heavily polluted, with low quality drivers, boy racers, gig economy delivery mopeds etc plus illegal electric mopeds on the cycleway etc, its also a major route for emergency vehicles, I always cut through Shoreditch/Victoria Park from central to Stratford, Ive done some exploring in the area between Whitechapel and Victoria Park and there seems to be lots of mini quiet ways round there buts its quite confusing as its mostly a jumble of identikit post-war estates.

@@Londoncycleroutes yeah vent x
I found your channel earlier and am really enjoying the content! You also seem to know your stuff when it comes to junction geometry/infrastructure. Is that just from cycling experience or do you work for the city? I, myself, work for Transport for London as a traffic system specialist so am very familiar with alot of the cycleways and junctions in London, and it's great to see someone else who knows their stuff! Keep up the great work :)
Cheers Joe, and good to chat to you the other day! I'm learning a little by osmosis, mostly by talking to people like yourself lol
amazing route, could you possibly have a look at a route from the Woolwich area please? :)
Yes! I’m planning a woolwich into central route, in fact I have already ridden it but need to film properly
Great video, just a quick note on the CYCLOPS junction: they don't slow down traffic because the cyclists go at the same time as the pedestrians, so when cars are already stopped for pedestrians there's no time loss.
Good point! important distinction
Love your videos! Any plans to cycle from Westminster/Victoria to South East i.e. Peckham/Forest Hill way? Thanks!
I’ll see what I can do, may be possible!
By the way check out Peckham - Waterloo which should help most of that way
have you got one for hackney to soho? the cycle route from clapton through islington and angel into soho is pretty quiet for the most part.
that's a good one, will give it a go
Exactly, cars take so much space amd require so much asphalt, compared to bikes. When carrying only 1-2 people, the use of a car is not justified. And the noise..... 🙉
makes a big difference!
Just a comment.. when you entered Wanstead Flats you crossed over into The London Borough of Redbridge
Thanks good info!
Fab
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for another great video and congratulations on the birth of your son. Some of this route is part of my regular commute, so I have a couple of observations:
- if you go left when you get to Stratford (so round past the bus station and Stratford Centre) you can avoid the awkward wiggle round Morrisons by using Grove Crescent Road and crossing onto Manbey Grove.
What was the distance of this considering it's around 70 minutes I imagine about 15-16 miles in London? Thank you for the video!
Yep it was about 14 miles, or 22km! And thank you for watching
Does anybody else want to know what month and what temperature during these rides? This looks like autumn, maybe 15 to 20 C?
This one was shot in the early summer or late spring!
@@Londoncycleroutes Thank you. It will be fun to follow some of your routes next year when I return to spend some time there.
Where is your camera mounted, is it on your chest or handle bars?
It’s on the handlebars!
Are all the boroughs lax about trimming overgrowth? Some of it is just negligent, impeding almost the entire path.
Yeah they generally have no money these days and stuff like basic maintained is as bad as I can remember
@@Londoncycleroutes I understand. Sounds like great opportunity for charity work by a local bike group.
RANT_ON @8:02 IMHO Scooter riders are a complete menace... they never look over their shoulder so do bizarre swerves without being aware that there is someone behind them... probably because they would fall off if they looked backwards but still RANT_OFF
I’m in two minds about them! Sometimes they seem practical but others not…
The bits after Stratford and around Forest Lane is awful. The roads are not too bad, but the signaling is terrible to keep you in the "cycle way".
I don’t think most of that is a designated cycleway at all it’s mostly just a route I’ve made up!
5:16 the highway order of hierarchy shouldn't you have let the pedestrian cross?
If you look carefully you can see I paused to let her cross but she stopped and let me through (easier to see on half speed)

you forgot 3am baby crying,,,,4.30 am baby crying....6am baby crying
Hahah
Very useful, I only knew some of these!
Yes I agree, on paper it should be good but there’s something quite unpleasant about the road sometimes
That's a long long ride. Re comments about poor infrastructure or lack of maintenance, have you ever had a councilor say "saw the video and fixed it"?
Officers have got in touch before! Smaller stuff like fixing signs and leaf clearance etc. I do know that cllrs watch the videos as well
@@Londoncycleroutes Brilliant. Need you to do Hertfordshire Cycle Routes in that case!
