I am new to the HD world. With that said, its CRAZY how you can go to 10 different dealers and you will get 10 different answers from sales, to parts to apparel. Example - Dealer A told me if I put a slip on other than HD my warranty will be voided. Dealer B told me thats not true. Doc Harley very interesting and informative video. Thanks for sharing this.
That’s exactly what happened to my 2003 RK classic, I found the leak with spray carb cleaner and of course HD doesn’t have those carb bolts any more but luckily I went to a local shop in havelock and Timmy found one of them in his extra bolt box and it fixed it good as new and he even let me borrow a special tool he had made to be able to get at it !
This happened to my carburetor 2004 FXSTD. The shop removed the carburetor to clean it, remounted. My bike purchase had only 5,000 miles, suffered from sitting bike syndrome. The slight misalignment caused an air gap at the intake mount to the cylinder, by the bike shop mechanic. It would cut out so bad at 3,000 rpm, no power. Pull the choke, ran fine. The shop did fix it, they promised a running bike. I am a DYI and have auto mechanic back ground. Knowing the idiosyncrasies of why and how to fix is essential. Doc Harley is my go-to guy for good Harley maintenance. Great videos, excellent technical advice.
I missed that fitting a Kuryakyn Hypercharger to a 2018 sportster, fortunately found the air gap after taking apart carefully,, this video will help loads of guys who like doing there own Mods
I installed a V&H VO2 Intake on my Street 750. Never had that problem. The One problem I had with the HD Air Box was, The Mounting Screw came loose. The one that holds it against the Front Cylinder. Only thing that kept it from getting sucked down the Intake was, The K&N Drop In filter. It got wedged between the Backing Plate and Filter. Some of the guys on the Street Forum had their engines ruined.
Thanks...top gremlim tip....but when changing air filter to an aftermarket, type on.. say 2007 flh..96ci....the active air intake soleniod...... on back stock air box . ..if it can't/can be safely removed?.and .the wiring? what to do ...just disconnect it and tape up ?,will not the cpu pick this up?as a diagnostic fault ...or this is only a export market feature ....cheers Ryano Adelaide hills n plains sth. I mounted a arlen ness stage two and a vance and hines tuner to my 05 heritage softail classic, 88ci. Put in all values according to the map. Did everything i was supposed too. I started it up and it barely started and ran like crap. I tried to let it idle and it died and a puff of smoke shot out from my air filter. Something isnt right.
This is why I love Cox-Harley-Davidson. They are great! They dont BS me and they dont charge me much. They just installed my intake and did the stage 1 tune for only 160 bucks
Great vid.. Question, I have 2013 soft tail. 103 and changing over with an oem he hi flow backing plate.. noticed there is a plug and sensor in the plastic backing plate. Do I just tape off and secure the wire? There is no explanation in the Kit.. thanks
I'm trying to mount my new Arlen Ness monster sucker onto my 2000 xlh with an S&S super e carb and cannot for the life of me get it to line up properly. Maybe I'll remove the carb from the manifold and see if it has "adjusted itself" over the years. I've only had it since this past Sept and don't know how hard the original owner rode it, altho I know he put a 1250 kit on and a new cam, s&s carb. 2bd owner didn't ride it for almost 2yrs when I picked it up...hopefully your video gave me the answer.
What's crazy about it is my 07 Rk classic dose the same thing. I changed the manifold seals witch were bad no difference changed the tps no change but she do idle alot better (smoother) with the new tps. But at startup she she still goes up to 3k 🤷♂️🤷♂️ so I'm lost with with this issue. Pulled the spark plugs and there perfect just the idle startup smh
Hey Doc. Love your tips brother. I too live in Savannah and yesterday I put the Big Sucker Stage 2 on my 2015 72. The question I have is when I mounted the filter, it does not set flush around the top edge, to the plate, as it does on the bottom half. It's not a huge gap. It appears that the air filter's seal, seats around the inside edge to the rise that goes around the plate. The small 8mm screws bottomed out in the standout bolts and all is torqued properly. Is it going to be a big deal when I take to Harley of Savannah this week for tune, remap?
Double check your instructions, sometime the H-D air brace can be missed when removing and putting on a new air cleaner. If that doesn’t work, send a picture to me at doc@lowcountryharley.com and I’ll see if it looks big enough to cause an air gap issue for the tuning.
I’ve got a 2002 FLSTF that I bought new in February of 2002. I saw a dyno chart in the parts manual at the time that showed performance improvements to the TC88B and listed the parts required to make those improvements. I wanted to slightly modify my bike so shortly after purchasing it I bought the necessary parts listed with the dyno chart in the parts manual and had them installed by the dealer. I had the exhaust upgraded to Vance& Hines before picking up the bike so exhaust was not included in the parts that I purchased. The parts did not include a K & N air filter but did include something to do with the air filter but I just don’t remember what. Also included was a Screamin Eagle (Mikuni) 42 mm flat side carb, a cam (I don’t recall the number), adjustable pushrods, Screamin Eagle ignition box, plugs and wires. The whole intent of the setup was to increase air flow, fuel delivery and spark and it made a noticeable difference. The question that I have that I can’t recall is what was changed on the air filter set up if the air filter itself was not changed in order to meet the demands of the new, larger carb. Any ideas?
That would depend on the air filter you upgraded to. Check the filter and it should say if it is a dry or oil applied filter. If it is an oil applied filter use the K & N cleaning kit. If air soap and water and let it dry on its own, do not attempt to blow dry.
I have a HD 48 2012 model, it have screamin eagle exhaust and heavy breather respectively. While running on the second gear, some shot sound( dont know it is backfiring or not) is occured. I heard that screamin eagle super pro tuner is required for ecm tuning. Is it required for tuning with tuner?? If not it leads to any problem in terms of engine life??
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson Thank you. I replaced my stock backing plate with the Arlen Ness Big Sucker and the holes weren't 100% lined up. Do you have a video on how to loosen the 4 bolts on the throttle body and line it up with the backing plate?
As a tech I thought you may have an opinion on this... I have a 2021 Harley Fat Boy. You may know that it comes from the factory with a high performance air cleaner, but I ordered an upgrade to that ("extreme" Screamin' Eagle air kit) which is 40% more efficient. My question is; if I plan to install a basic full exhaust on this Fat Boy (whatever brand) and that's it, is there a downside to having this upgraded air kit (like it can't be tuned properly, poor gas millage, poor performance, won't work well with typical exhausts like Big Shots V&H pipes, etc...)? I understand that the advantage is that it will work better with a cam installation later on if elected, correct?
Your choice is one of the best offered by HD. Any improvement in getting more air into your motor is a plus. Of coarse adding a performance exhaust system will demand a tuner that can add more fuel. So the path you are choosing may decrease MPG. But as long as you ride with a controled right hand you might not notice. The only negative is with an "open" air cleaner you need to carry a rain sock.....Doc
If you really want to work on your bike, invest in a Factory Service Manual instead of wasting your time searching. I'm here to help not show how....Doc

Yes if you did those two adjustments to your bike you need a tuner, you are likely running too lean.
