Lower your Squarebody C10 for $120! Slammed! And still drives great!

- In this video Chinstap and I lower his 1981 C10 shortbed square body to roughly what a 5/7 drop kit would be. By only cutting 2 coils off in the front suspension and installing an eBay flip kit and shock extensions in the rear.

I love how we all knew what he meant by "the land where they eat bats and such
Common knowledge now!
Thanks! Gonna do this to my 73
These truck are badass, I had a 76 ScottsDale on homemade 4" lift and 35's back in the day. I learned to do U-joints thanks to the crappy pinion angle till I put in a real lift block kit with a high lift rental jack and long extended breaker bars... in my highschool apartment parking lot!
Gotta love a good old square!
I lowered a truck but instead of cutting springs I took a spring lift kit and reversed it and just sqeezed the springs together. Made a big difference when I outgrew the lowrider part of it and needed a work truck. Just cut the bolts and up came the front end and took blocks out in the back and was able to use it as a work truck without having to replace the front coils.
Those kids sure can weld, must be the extry vitamins in that bat meat
Wauuu good job buddy
I look for videos of anybody cutting two full coils on a springs ,,didn't find anybody doing it am glad you say it drives decent if avoid holes and bumps
Am cutting 2 full coils on my 96 suburban .thanks man :)
New Sub here :)
Let 'er rip! Thanks for the sub!
I keep find great older videos I haven’t seen yet.
Cool to see how it's done, don't think I'd ever actually use this knowledge. Never been a fan of a lowered truck just a preference thing. I never really cared for lowering a car but have seen some that looks better lowered. So maybe it will come to grow on me if I live long enough. Lol
To each their own!
The truck looks nice
Thanks to share.
Always a good thing to swap out those metric with non metric grade 8. Bought a DJM flip, two of those bolts smoked the threads with no weight or torque on em.
No doubt!
some of those orange jack stands are a safety recall at Harbor freight. Check part number and see if they have replacements in stock, They run out of replacements fast.
And while you're exchanging those jack stands, might want to chock those front wheels when the rear in in the air.
Later model GM pickups need to have the frame rails notched .
That breather for the diff was really important to you 🤣
They are!
Damn, you guys are brave, no chalks on the front tires... haha.
Good Vid 👍
Safety third right?!? Thanks for watching!
I heated my front springs with a torch and dropped the jack till it was where I wanted
I gotta do this to my 87 gmc shorty
How are you making out with the rear suspension travel with out the c-notch?
I've only bottomed out once, and that was before I installed new shocks. I plan to install a shorter bumpstop pad down the road.
The rear axle hasn't bashed through the frame yet! 4 months in! Thanks for watching!
Thought maybe there was a hidden track at the end like the CD's in the 90's
Those spring's will get really weak after a few month's of driving I had to get the drop spindles for the front of my 1979 GMC SHORT BED to have the right steering contral.
Been 7 months now and no issues. They're the same springs that have been in there since 1981 so I can't imagine they'd just go bad all of a sudden.
Criss cross Apple sauce .... 😆
I love these trucks , I have a Silverado but I got some body damage from last year that I've been procrastinating on fixing. You ever do body repair , I'm a newbie here so but always looking for how to repair
I've done some rust repair! Check out my cab corner video on an OBS!
@@MortskeRepair most of the damage is on the bed but I gotta nice lil swoop into the cab and door tho. It's what happens wit runaway love.. Hyundai elantra wanted to kiss my bumper and I just spun in circles over it a and after I focused against a guardrail the bitch ran away... lol
Nice info! My son is ordering parts now for his '82
Right on
Cool
Thanks Todd!
And I’m cutting springs in the morning 💪🏼
Just don't go too far! There's no going back!
Hi. I just found your channel. I like what is going on so I subbed you so I could follow what's going on. I hope you will drop around to the Dog house and see what is going on there. Thanks for sharing.👍👍
Thanks for subscribing!
I bought a truck recently and I looks real similar to this.. took it to a shop and they were like oh this is wrong you have to get a new axle...
Sounds like you need a better shop.
Wanting to do this to my truck, Running 275/60/15 all around, think it’ll rub with the tires up front? Great vid btw 👍🏼
Yeah, that's a lot of tire up front. Especially if it's low!
i have the ssme tires on my truck what's the lowest i can go
Is the truck a long bed or a short bed and did you have too do anything too the pinion angle in the drive shaft?
Nothing with the angle.
So, when I put drop spindles on and cut one ring out of the coil, do standard shock replacements work or do I need shorter ones?
You'll need shorter ones.
How was it for driving after the 2 coils cut? Is it worth going with 3” spindles instead?
Drives great actually. Same as the pickup that I did with spindles anyhow. I'm going to do my Blazer this way.
So you know if you have too change the Angle on the drive shaft on the long bed ?
I don't believe so
Where did he find that kit at! Or can I get the link tagged! I’ve been looking to drop mine as far as I can without a c notch but trying to be cheap about it lol
Chris, do a search on eBay for “C10 rear axle flip kit”. Comes with u-bolts. And then “C10 shock extension”. Thanks for watching!!
Flip kit and shock extensions I purchased!
🤘 I appreciate it guys thanks!
Hey can I buy the clutch pedals?
@@KoensBrothers Yes, send myself or Zachery a message or drop your email address.
What rear shocks did you use? 5" flip kit drop?
Stock shocks with shock extension kit.
Hows the Ride a Year or so L8tr? Did You Speed Frame The vid ? Or Did You Cut the Coils With-out dropping The Bottom a-frame? if so quite a time saver. How Much was the front end alignment off, After? Thanx
2 years later. Drives great. Never split the ball joints. Aligned fine.
Cool truck man shiny too you can exchange that truck for that car on video for same price if you want or that Impala with a door that swing while driving the one with lose fan belt noise and they can renew ultra7 movie make that into the pointer and they fix the seats make motor run good and keep that car with 58 empiral
I don’t get it how did the back drop 7” with a 5” flip kit did you do 2” shackles too
We did not do a shackle kit. Only the flip kit and shock relocation kit.
Can you share pictures or video of the orientation of the u bolt plate? I'm having the same issue with the driveshaft.
I'll see if Chin has anything. I know that was the most difficult part but we ended up making it work and didn't modify anything.
@@MortskeRepair thank you sir much appreciate the help.
Looks like I have the stud for the leaf spring pack in the front hole. I think the flip block made more of a difference. I think we had to put it also in the front hole. Then supported the axle at ride height. I think then we could get the driveshaft in with the proper output shaft engagement.
@@zacheryjohnson234 thank you young sir! I think I made it happen, now to solve the issue of the diff riding on the frame.
It went from a farm truck to a low rider.
Just need some fuzzy balls around the top of the window. Maybe some curb feelers.
Cool idea Dee!
My mom had a 68 Ford Galaxy like that Impala once in a while back door swings open but car had nice shine no rust nothing but it's parts became dangerous and rusted in some engine ujoint etc when we gave it to my brother in-law so he took out good parts kept it and told that poor car away that car was green and was a Godzilla car acted like it and untamable breaks locked wheels locked etc every thing was stubborn rebellious and etc cause it was getting old more so
Is it still comfortable over the pot holes
Yeah it's not bad at all. Same as any lowered vehicle. Try to avoid them as you can but been daily driving it 20 miles.
Hi!!! How many turns did they cut from the spring?
We cut 2 coils (or turns) from the spring to get the height that it's currently at. Thanks for watching!
👍
Thanks for watching!
Did yall only cut the coils for the front ? Thinkin about lowerin my long bed, also did you have to tske them out of the housing
We cut 2 entire coils on the front while they were in the control arm pockets. We installed a flip kit in the rear. Thanks for watching!
@@MortskeRepair love the vid man, thanks
@@countryyoungan3687 Hey thanks so much! And good luck with your project!
Got a part number for pinion seal?
Check Rock Auto. There's several different rear axle options
what size tires are on it?
255/60-15 up front and 275/60-15 in the rear. Cooper Cobras on GM 8" factory rally wheels. Thanks for watching!
Did u cut the coils with them still on the truck? If so how ?
Bryan, we used an oxygen/acetylene torch to cut the coil springs when they were still in the spring pockets. You can see what we cut out @16:34 Thanks for watching!
Yeah I seen that I just wish you would’ve showed the process Of you cutting them while they were still in there I would like to see that but cool video anyway
@@bryankendrick3422 Yeah, this was one of my early videos. I've been trying to show more detail too. I just poked the torch in there and cut 2 full coils off. Then cut it off into smaller chunks in order to get it out of the pocket. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the response, appreciate it
My Question From above answered thanx Bryan
Should of just put a 454i in it and you'd have a 4 inch drop😄
I think that would have cost more than the gas axe drop job!
Did you cut the coil springs while compressed?
No. It was jacked up.
Another question if I may, I am doing a 3in spindle drop and cutting a ring off the coils on a 82 square body. Do I need to do anything to the stock bump stops?
@@tomazzfrommichigan4873 You shouldn't have to for 1 coil.
How is the ride quality with the flipkit?
Same as original. Still uses the same springs just sets it on top.
Do you have too have the shock extensions for the shocks as well or can you get away with out them
You have to or the geometry isn't right and they're at too much of an angle and they'll bottom out because you changed the distance so you'd need a shorter shock without them.
Good job! What’s the color code on your truck??
He's going to check. It has been repainted but we think it's a factory color. Thanks for watching!
Mortske Repair thank you! The code should be in the glove box! ✌️
@@Jr-qp3qo I'll try to get him to take a look. He's been too busy driving it!
1981 paint code 95 burnt orange metallic
Zachery Johnson thanks
do they sell this for newer trucks? 99-07 silverado
They sell flip kits for the 99-07 pickups yes. The front suspension trick will likely not work on those years however.
Mortske Repair thank you very much! very helpful
Just information ya God has invented dropped spindles for the squarebody gm like back in 77' eh?
Right, and he charges $250 plus dollars. Plus more labor. This front end drop was essentially free and took about an hour. It aligned well after this modification and has thousands of trouble free miles since then. There's a lot of ways to skin a cat.
Thumbs up for the bats before I even watched the rest.
Haha thanks Brian!
Need replace front brake lines when you get time.
Stay tuned for the next episode of the DD! Definite something we noticed after we lowered it.
The brake video is up! Thanks for watching!
Do u have to cut frame
We did not. You could depending on how saggy your rear springs are.
Ballsey With Only Jack Stands Holding It Mid Vehicle
Living life dangerously I guess. I've used the chrome sockets on the impact a few times too.

Not the proper or safe way to do it. If you want to lower it, do it right. Cutting coils is highly dangerous to you and everybody else on the road, as is that chinese garbage you bolted on the back. If you can't afford it, don't do it.
How exactly is it dangerous?
