  • In this episode of Battlegrounds, H.R. McMaster and Elbegdorj Tsakhia discuss Mongolian security concerns, the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, and the continued threat of warfare in the Pacific. Former president of Mongolia, key leader of the Mongolian Democratic Revolution, and Mongolian prime minister in 1998 and between 2004 to 2006, Elbegdorj Tsakhia joins Hoover senior fellow H.R. McMaster to share his thoughts on current Mongolian security concerns, his assessment of Russia’s war in Ukraine, and the continued threat of warfare in the Pacific. A pivotal figure in peace and democracy movements across Asia, Elbegdorj discusses Mongolia’s shift from an authoritarian, communist government to a democracy and free-market economy, the motivations driving the Chinese Communist Party, and the dangers that the Iranian-Russian-Chinese relationship poses to the world.

Every American should watch this interview! Thank you General McMaster for creating this series. Very inspiring to listen to President Tsakhia talk about his values and leadership. It gives me hope that freedom, liberty, democracy, law and family values have a chance of flourishing in this world. Remember liberty starts with the individuals values, and the greatest threat to democracy is corruption.

Mongolia is in a very rough spot, I can't see how it keeps it's integrity as strategic aims commingle and expand between Russia and China. However, being a buffer state between the world's two largest malfeasant nations currently gives it a degree of autonomy, the less those nations trust each other but remain either strong enough to deter one another or too weak to act to fulfill that distrust, this allows Mongolia freedom and independence, ironically. You should check out Naadam fest '24 in the Bay Area, HR - in July so of course, as Twain noted, more than a bit chilly! In Alameda or maybe Chrissy Fields.

What a great conversation. Elbegdorj Tsakhia is a very wise man. I really loved how he emphasized that America’s competitive advantage is our FREEDOM. I think it’s easy for us to forget that freedom is not a given, and that the people in many countries throughout the world look to the U.S. as a shining city on a hill. A beacon of democratic self-governance based on limited government and protection of fundamental rights. These are the core of our values and our success, and they are our competitive advantage against China, Russia, and Iran. We are *better* than authoritarian regimes so long as we symbolize the promise of freedom, and we should never forget it.

No ! President Taskhia your country is not the third neighbor ! Time changed, Mongolia is our ally of democracy! One of my Inner Mongolia friends, suggests that if CCP invades Taiwan, Mongolia should unite with Inner Mongolia from CCP!
