    I'm a little late to this party but I believe this has been a topic several times. My swing motion (and ball striking) have improved enough in the course of watching/listening to you guys that I have some of my golf buddies asking what I have been working on. My instinct is to say - the backswing. I'm convinced that getting into the correct position at the top (however far back that is) makes it almost natural to go back to the ball without having to think about it too much. They all tell me I have shortened up my backswing but it doesn't feel like it. Of course, the reason they are asking is that I am consistently hitting the tee shorts further and I'm rarely chasing the resulting shot into the trees the way they are used to seeing. I have a lot further to go but I credit the improvement to my time spent with your videos. Thanks, guys. TW

You guys however are unique and really communicate the correct information and back it up with your research with gears. Your fundamental knowledge of the golf swing is second to none. Thank you for your time. I hope to one day get the chance to come see you guys.

    Thinking of just letting that right elbow pivot to be the focal point of the backswing gets me in a great spot and it feels intuitive to gradually increase the bend in my right arm. Thanks guys.

  • @damonlrice
    @damonlrice Před 2 lety +1

    Weird as it may sound, I actually "feel" like I'm flexing my right bicep up as I rotate my right shoulder back. I was led to believe so long that the right arm causes so many problems in the swing that I became deathly afraid of my right arm having any major role in my swing. All that being said, it's just like what was mentioned in the video-you have to rotate the torso back and flex the trailing arm up. This is the key that unlocks the natural movement that occurs in the downswing. Although you may "feel" that your right side is dominating the swing at first, the left side actually drives the downswing very naturally.

    You guys should give an example of what every drill looks like if you were to do it from an upright standing position. It really helps to visualise hand, arm, body, leg positions without the tilt.
    For eg your hand speed video (showing how you can either shallow - extending right arm; or steepen - bending right arm more) would be great to see how this looks from a upright standing position, as this would show how the right arm extends without moving back or forward of its position relative to the body (and would evidence where the hands will be just before impact, in relation to your thighs)

One question- some teach having right forearm completely vertical or even pointing behind while in posture- seems to require extreme flexibility- you're ok with right forearm pointing forward while n posture? Also- ok to allow right elbow to begin to bend as you start takeaway?

    Hello Mike and Shaun,
    I am a big fan of your instructional videos!!
    I was revisiting your videos on the trail elbow during the during the backswing, because I am searching for your advice on whether the trail elbow should be in a vertical position during the backswing or if it is okay to have the elbow horizontal. I know there are a lot of professionals that have a flying elbow. But I am amateur! So should I focus on having a vertical trail elbow at the top of the backswing and during the downswing?

  • @petegalindez9961
    @petegalindez9961 Před 2 lety

    Great stuff! My problem is a bit more nuanced from this…My backswing is fine, not full. But, I keep the triangle well and swing back pretty much on a single plane (think Sergio Garcia). However, on my downswing, it seems that my body and hips start to turn, but my arms at that point lag behind, drop down low, and I wind up looking like I have to pull them from behind me coming from the inside. My misses are flushly hit pushes, or big hooks, with the occasional chunk from coming in so flat from the inside…

Hopefully my body will allow it to happen. Thanks guys. I always recommend you all. I guess I didn’t remember you saying why it’s so bad to use the arms to create depth. Just bc pros don’t do it I guess should be enough of an answer. Lol

  • @DASH1ful
    @DASH1ful Před 4 lety

    that is good advice: don't pinch your elbows in. but, the right elbow has to move back in the direction that it points in at address. tone major problem that causes the "motor pattern" is a faulty grip. so often a player takes it back in the right direction, but then their right elbow comes riding out and they then get to thinking that there must be something wrong with their takeaway. but, the key is to apply the grip secret in the second half of the backswing. when you look at the ben hogan swing 1953, by fernando cano, you can see how hogan's right shoulder, though it pops up in the first part of his backswing, seems to relax and drop down in the second half of his backswing. he did this by applying his grip secret. and, needless to say, a player should never pull the club back with their right hand. there aint no grip secret gonna rescue you if you do that.

    Great drills for the backswing which coincidentally I am trying to fix. I have trouble with getting depth and being too steep. I know that the correct way for depth is the shoulder turn. I guess I am struggling with the thought that I need to watch how much the left arm crosses the chest and I think I am overdoing raising the arms in order to not swing that left arm too much against the chest. I think either in this video or another one that the pros on average swing their left arm between 8 and 10 inches across the chest, is that correct thinking? So basically, I think I need to allow that left arm to arc a little more inside during the backswing.?
    When looking on video if I draw a straight line from the butt of the club down and it lines up with the ankle That is considered good depth?

    When working to adjust this is it normal to feel like the shoulder gets tired feeling after a while from the external rotation stretching? When not used to swinging like this I find that the shoulder is tighter than I realized. It feels worn out after a while of practicing like I’ve been throwing a ball a lot and haven’t in a while.
    Basically I think shoulder mobility is important to get into the “tray holding” position

    Great video..do you feel the root cause of the right arm / elbow getting deep is due to the right becoming disconnected too much from the upper right pec or the left arms pushing it across the chest too much or a combo of both?

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  Před 4 lety +3

      That's a really good question. Just from talking with players who do it and understanding what they say their concept is and what they're trying to do, I'd say it's moving the left arm too far across the chest. It's trying to get depth with the arms (instead of the turn) that's the #1 cause. for sure.

    Who could argue with these wisdoms?
    Great drills, thanks guys.
    Collapsing the left arm across the chest in the "fake" turn...
    driving that right elbow out of position..
    easy faults to develop as you age. (trust me)
    I am wondering, why no mention of right elbow and its relationship to right hip?
    Keeping that right elbow down and in sync with right hip on the takeaway ...while keeping the proper angle of the right arm..
    good thought? Seems like guys like Hogan liked that idea.

      Not big fans of that for the majority of golfers. Hogan had very long arms for his height. Most golfers would benefit from letting that elbow move up some.

      I wonder what percentile of the population has an arm length to height ratio similar to that of Hogan.

      @@TheCuddy1986 not sure about the population in general, but as far as golfers go, I'd say a very small percentage

      @@bjohnson515 I've heard that 5'8" might be a bit generous. "Program Height" as we used to call it😊

    Hi I am a professional golfer on the Indian tour. I am looking to take a lesson to improve my game. Does an online lesson make any sense I will not be able to use the technology you have to assess my swing? Where are your physical location? Rahul Sikund
