    Grammar Translation Method (19th century): Classes taught in mother tongue, focus on translation, grammar rules, reading classical texts. No attention to pronunciation.
    - Gouin Method (late 1800s): Taught directly in target language using connected sentences, no translation or explicit grammar rules. Focused on oral skills.
    - Direct Method (early 1900s): Only used target language, introduced everyday vocabulary/sentences through question/answer exchanges. Emphasized speech, listening, correct pronunciation and grammar.
    - Audiolingual Method (1950s): Used drilling of phrases, inductive grammar teaching, limited vocabulary in context. Goal was oral proficiency.
    - Cognitive Code Learning (1960s): Incorporated more deductive learning and rule explanations based on Chomsky's work. Retained drilling and grammatical sequencing.
    - Designer Methods (1970s): Community Language Learning used supportive groups. Suggestopedia used relaxation. Silent Way used stimulus words. Total Physical Response heavily used imperatives and interaction. Natural Approach focused on relaxation and comprehensible input.
    - Communicative Language Teaching (1980s onward): Eclectic approach viewing language as a means of communication. Included real-life tasks and focused on learner needs. Teacher as facilitator of communication.

    Firstly, thanks a lot for the detailed video, Tania. I have an assignment on the methods used in precommunicative language era. In that case, will all of these methods (except for CLT) be included? It would be really helpful if you reply!

      Hello!! Thanks for your comment. Yes, please include all of them except CLT and if it is possible, check out the book TEACHING BY PRINCIPLES by Douglas Brown ,page 34 for a quick glance on such methods. The best for you on your assignment😉

    Hi, I see that Community Language Learning, Content-Based Instruction, Task-Based Instructions and Participatory Aprroaches aren't mentioned in your video. In addition, I must do a research on Phonetic Method and Psychological Method. Are they part of Language Teaching Methods? Thanks for your response in advance.

      Hi Yen. For More información on the first three approaches you mention, you can check the book by Jack C Richards on Methods and Approaches, as for for the two last ones, they might not have been as well informed or solid since this Is the first Time I hear about them. Thanks for writing. Have a great day!

    Where would TPRS(Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) fall in this timeline?

    • @taniateachertraining5281
      @taniateachertraining5281  Před 3 lety +1

      Dear Tlamacazqui, TPRS is very recent. It began in California with Blaine Ray. It takes the principles from TPR and incorporates them into story telling. If we were to place this method in a timeline, it would be at the beginning of the 2000's.

    Türkiye'deki sözde akademisyenler, izleyin de öğretmeyi öğrenin en başta! Gerçi sizde öyle bir istek var mı bilmiyorum da. Olsaydı oturup adam gibi eğitim modeli oluştururdunuz gerçi.
    (You, so called academicians in Turkey, watch this so you might learn how to teach at first. Yet, do you ever have such a desire? If you had it, you would have prepared a proper education module rather than arrogancy.
