I don’t hate Todd, but the delivery can be a bit much for some. I’ll give him credit for getting to the point and actually backing his opinions up with Bible verses. It’s just that I don’t think he would do well in debate to backup the verses themselves logically.

The benefit to having so many sects of Christianity is that there is an endless stream of lunatics that can easily claim No-True-Scotsman, for their own extremely specific and subjective interpretation of what the bible ACTUALLY means and wants.
Logically speaking, if God is a thinking agent who has their own free will, that also means that even God's true opinions are subjective as well.

When I left my church I was shunned by the only friends and social system I'd ever known, kicked out of where I lived, and cut off from my family. Super fun; I definitely only deconstructed because it was trendy.
If you stopped a hobby, then you never REALLY liked the hobby in the first place. No matter how much time, energy, or money you poured into it. Nah. It was all..fake or something I dunno. It's crazy. The whole claim of "it's just a trend" is such a slap in the face to us.
I spent the first 17 years of my life deeply devoted to the Christian faith, trying my best to be the best Christian I could be, I wanted to be an apologist in high school and even started to prepare for it via some concurrent enrollment taking a philosophy class or two. But when I started to really study what made my faith, my faith. I could not justify my beliefs when reading the bible from a secular point of view, I found it absurd as I do with all religious texts. I spent the next year and a half really examining myself and came to the conclusion that I am an atheist, it wasn't caught up in the moment kind of thing as though I just woke up one morning and thought "I hate god, I am an atheist now!"
It took years to come to the conclusion that I do not believe in any sort of deity, and It's not from a place of "hatred" for it, and also absolutely no outside force made me an atheist, if anything, anytime I tried to reach out irl or online in regards to just general help in understand the bible or my faith, typically a Christian would find their way to me to tell me how I am being misled and I am allowing the devil and demons to control my thoughts and that I need to "guard" myself more. And at that point, it sounded like legitimate psychosis when I heard them talk.
The exact moment someone earnestly tries to understand a specific religion, the less it tends to make sense to them.

If the bible is true, then christians will us the biblical reasoning for a modern day issue that has been dealt with before
I actually feel really bad for so much of his audience, because if older folks who are already heartbroken that their children and grandchildren turned away from the faith are turning to him for insight, he’s essentially telling them “you screwed up, you didn’t do a good enough job of teaching your kids, and because you fell down on the job they are going to hell.” Which is like grabbing the knife and twisting it even further.
The first argument he claims, that they weren't real Christians, is one of the things that kept me in the faith and doing missions. I was so scared that I was a fake Christian for questioning things.

I'm still a Christian but guys like this drive me bonkers. I really like what you two are doing and how you're approaching the evangelical culture we grew up in. I hate it too, and would argue it's very unChristlike. Keep it up - people need this kind of reasonable, studied, yet empathetic take on it.

If they "were never saved in the first place", that's the kind of thing that gave me a lot of damnation anxiety when I was a Christian, because if somebody believed they were saved but turned out not to be, then how do I know for sure that I am? How can I know if any of my friends truly are?
Oh, and as a vegan I keep hearing that anyone who stops being vegan "never really was" or they were just plant based or just being trendy, etc. It's so reductive and dishonest.

As someone who grew up in a fundamentalist church that believed the Bible said that it WAS possible for true Christians to leave the Faith, that line of reasoning that they were never true Christians to begin with has always been wild to me. Also goes to show that most of the things Fundies will say the Bible is VERY clear on, another Fundi could say "actually, the Bible says the opposite."

The only "evidence" required to accuse someone of being a fake Christian (at least according to people like Todd Friel) is a departure from the church. People like Todd can't conceive of the possibility that "true Christians" might decide to leave the church. It is this lens that allows apologists to decide which doubters are "true" and which doubters are "fake"--everything else is made-up to support the narrative.
Edit: Todd is clearly a character actor, so my above comments only apply to his on-screen persona. I expect the real person knows full-well what he's doing.

The thing I'll never understand about the whole "you weren't really Christian" or "you really do believe in God" argument is who do they think they're going to convince with that? Let's say for the sake of argument that they're absolutely right and they know better than we do what's in our own heads. How would that line of discussion ever, ever win over a single convert? If anything it's going to make them disgusted with the arrogant jerk.
That's not why they do it. It's not to convert people, it's to try and reinforce the zealotry of those already there. That's what most apologetics are really for. They're not trying to win people over, they're trying to scare people into not leaving.
Like Jackgar said, when they say this it isn't for you. I think it also has to do with the fact that they need a way to explain why you left without having to face the real reasons. If they can believe you only left because you were never a true Christian, they don't have to worry about whether or not your reasoning is valid. Since they totally ARE a real Christian, your journey has nothing to do with them, and they don't have to think about it any deeper than that.
I mean I know that. But they at least claim to be trying to convert people. And I do believe many of them legitimately think that's what they're doing.

After going through the process of deconstruction myself, his video is a perfect illustration of Christians living in an internal loop. Like you guys said his eyes are wide shut. The argument constantly needing to repent vs. "Once saved always saved" was actually the catalyst that led me to skepticism. When I noticed it firsthand, I had to wonder how the religious authorities could disagree on something that's so foundational to the religion. It shook me pretty hard.

Second. Every denomination believes in continual repentance as an aspect of works that follow grace. What they disagree on is more the mechanics of it all.

Dismissal of another person's experience is a great way of invalidating everything and anything they say or do.
Beyond simple confirmation bias, this strategy saves them from having to perform that most arduous of tasks: that of performing a reality check.
By invalidating you and your experiences, by labelling you "liar", they need never enquire of you why you left the faith.
It is a practice that ensures continuity of ignorance against all comers.

This video really highlighted one of the things that pushed me toward "deconstruction". If the whole bible is all about god's gift of salvation, and it is the perfect word of a perfect god, it should be impossible for people honestly seeking to understand it to come away with such radically different interpretations about something as critical as salvation.

The human intellect is wounded by original sin to have complete knowledge of something. However the Catholics, and arguably Anglo-Catholics and Greek Orthodoxs don’t have this problem as they rely on the Bishops to interpret doctrine and come to consensus.
But isn’t all great literature divisive in some way? I don’t think differing interpretations of Scripture is a good reason to leave the faith. You are just as obligated to seek truth about Scripture as you are about all other important issues. What should all truth be reducible to reading some book one time and calling it quits? I think it makes perfect sense for theological understanding to come through a lot of intense work in some cases.

While I don’t think tradition of itself is a bad thing it is still not an excuse not to study the material for oneself and gain understanding of alternative points of view. Hermeneutics is not a mere matter of bishop-consensus. Tradition can (big surprise) get things wrong.

Nor is other writing supposed to convey information that will determine where someone spends all of eternity. According to Christianity, an accurate understanding of what God's message is is the most important thing ever, and the only way to read the message is through a translation of writings centuries old, and people consistently get different interpretations from it. Do you seriously think that no catholic ever read the bible themselves and believed their views on it were right? What about differing denominations who don't have bishops?

I was a Christian for 51 years. Read through the Bible at least 10 times. FIFTY ONE YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!! That's an entire life for many people. I could not have been more of a Christian. I'm an atheist and my wife is non denominations Christian. She says that since she is saved that being her spouse I'm covered.

Fear. That was what convinced me at 7 years old and that is what kept me in church until just a few years ago when I finally moved out on my own. That and my mother dragging me to church every week. And it's only been recently that I've been seeing the comparison of the "relationship" with God as being an abusive father. Ironically, (or not) my step father was an abusive alcoholic and my mother met him in church of all places.

I cannot stand the "once saved always saved" baptist ideology. My mother had this belief, and paired with her "only Jesus can judge me" defense, she found absolutely no fault religiously in her addiction to heroin, neglect and abuse to all three of her children, inconsistent use of her psych meds, broken promises, and so on. If I tried to write down the list of offenses in my life because of her or her mother, you'd believe I was the abused kid equivalent of the "and everyone clapped" Tumblr asshole, but that's beside the point.

I've had the same thing (in lesser mean) done to me. "You can't judge me!"...while they ruthlessly judge you. It only flows one way. That's called a personality disorder. The only answer is, "Bull-pucky. Watch me judge your useless butt." Which you've quite beautifully done for your mother here.
No worries about that, either. My parents were similarly narcissistic, they just didn't have the religious reasoning behind it. It was, "I'm the adult and...." Which made the same lack of sense for exactly the same reason.

This was really interesting. As a non American I'm fascinated by the amount of christians in your country. I personally have never understood blind faith. It makes no sense to me.

I was raised hearing that if I didn't do what God told me, he was going to crush me and very bad things were going to happen to me, now, I'm an atheist. So, it seems that strategy doesn't work either.
I went to a church with a pastor trained at a sister school of Todd’s favorite seminary. When I deconstructed I was a deacon studying to be a pastor. I gave Todd’s ministry money monthly for nearly 4 years! I didn’t realize until then how dangerous he is! And I want my damn money back.
