The entire video, despite being about himself for a significant chunk of it, felt very humble. He acknowledges the amount of hard work, and luck, that went into every run, be they good, bad, or mediocre, and while he ended the video with "and that's where the record stands today" like usual, I feel like he's aware that record could be broken at any moment. I feel like this video is another example of just how incredible, friendly, and welcoming the speedrunning community is as a whole.

Around 4 years ago, I underwent brain surgery and was stuck in the hospital for over a month. After leaving, I couldnt really do any activities since the surgery left me unable to physically move for a while.
DK64 had always been my favorite N64 game, so I decided to search for "DK64 speedrun" since longplays of the game were over 8 hours and came across your DK video. I was immediately hooked and ended up watching the rest of your videos that day.
The videos motivated me to start running for myself and so I started with Limbo, pretty simple game. I tried for a couple of weeks and on one of my runs I got a PB which was in the top 10 spots (unrecorded just like Billy Mitchell). I was so proud of myself and told my parents and loved-ones about it and coming from a country in latin-america, they didnt really approve or show interest. It really hurts when someone that you love doesnt support you.
I had loss the little motivation that I had left and stopped running.
And even though I dont run anymore, I still watch every single one of your videos and I was so proud once I knew that you got a WR yourself. For some reason I thought you only did the commentary.
Some of these moments warm my heart and get me a bit emotional, just like the moment Simply got WR and told his parents. I thank you for helping me out during tough times.

    “This runner… was me.”
My mouth was wide open. Seeing SS as a storyteller, maybe the greatest storyteller that speedrunning history has ever seen, is a thing. We all are used to seeing some rare footage of clutch moments from the best speedrunners in the world, stacking the puzzle of the best moments in videogame speedrunning history piece by piece, with an iconic background music and some real talent at script writing and telling.
But then you watch this, and you realize that Summoning Salt, the same guy you’ve always watched keeping you on the edge of the seat for every world record broken in every game possible, is that same guy that set every WR ever in Punch-Out history for more than 3 years (if I’m not mistaken), breaching the sub-15 and sub-14.50 barrier for the first time ever, without anyone ever getting close to the same time, and basically being one of the best players ever existing at this game…
I’m not seeing this man the same ever again. If you told me that he was a good speedrunner, well… I would have believed it. Sure, you can have time and talent to spend, and learn most tricks in order to get really competitive. But to get to be world-class, and actually clinch to the WR, and stand on top for it for all this time… you’re just the best Punch-Out player in the world, at least at the moment.
Very good work of yours man. I sure didn’t expect this. At all. And by far, that’s all deserved after all you’ve done for the speedrunning community and CZcams in general. That’s just one more achievement for you. Keep strong on this.
    Sincerely,
an anonymous Italian fan of yours, who’s almost crying in joy after seeing that you’ve actually made it into a speedrunning WR

Man, I love the tone shift the video took once it got into Salt’s own reign over the record halfway through it. It went from documenting the records, its holders, change of strategies etc. in the typical thorough and accurate detail Salt’s become known for on top of his usual excellent and ever improving storytelling, to a personal soliloquy on his feelings grinding the record, taking it and then holding it, his respect of his competitors (especially zallard and sinister), his history with MTPO and speedrunning as a whole; even going into the little things like Tyson going from his weakness to his strength (he holds the WR on just the Tyson fight also btw), how much Don Flamenco kicked his ass, and his changing comfort level in holding the record. It’s so neat.
And it’s not just the tone of the video itself either. It’s the tone of his actual voice that changes too. At 1:12:20 where he goes into getting back into beating his first WR, you can hear a combination of joy, pride (in a good way) and nostalgic reflection in his voice talking about getting back to the lab and on the grind on top of his sheer passion for the game. Just tops.
The best part is? Even though you can tell the tone shifts, he still continues to explain everything about the game’s quirks and the development of the record (and his many failed attempts) with objectivity and doesn’t sound self-absorbed even slightly. He’s just happy as fuck dude, and he gets to own that shit.
Fantastic video, probably my favorite he’s done and I’ve been watching for 6 years. Now drop and give me 14:3X.

There are a number of other Categories that Salt has the WR on, including Tied ones:
Another World Circuit: A secret bonus mode that you can access with a unique passcode while holding A, B, and Select simultaneously. It has 9 fights and ends at Mike Tyson. Strangely, it gives you the decimal time for Tyson here. Salt's WR is an 11:34
90 Minute Challenge: Construct an IL Sum Of Best within 90 minutes. You can start on any fighter you want, and the cut-off to start your last fight is when the timer hits 90 minutes. Salt's WR is a 14:21, 25 seconds ahead of the Single Segment WR and 4 seconds ahead of Matt Turk's Sum of Best (Yep, we might actually beat Turk's Sum of Best with a Single Segment run! Crazy).
RTA: Basically just Single Segment with a real-time timer instead of in-game. Some strategies are changed around and there is a truckload of more RNG in play. Salt recently lost his longstanding 18:36 WR to KThree's 18:34, but took it right back the next day with an 18:32.
Blindfolded: Pretty self-explanatory. Salt made a video about this, and then got the WR a few years later. He's brought the time down to 18:03.
Tyson Challenge: You know how Single Segment is getting through 14 fights from Glass Joe to Mike Tyson while adding the times up? Now imagine that, but it's all Mike Tyson. Salt's WR is 32:14 (Average per fight is 2:18)
    IL Times:
Glass Joe: It's a freebie with many buffer strats to get it. In fact, it's why the category was eventually removed. Still, it's a WR. Some buffer strats do have a possibility of getting you a 42.25 instead of a 42.00.
Von Kaiser: It involves 50-50 stars, and _Quest to Beat Matt Turk_ goes more in-depth about it, but Salt has recently joined the TAS Perfect 35.61 club on Speedrun started by Zallard many years back.
Don Flamenco: Another freebie thanks to the buffer strat. A ton of people got that 14.97, and Salt is one of the first players with recorded proof on Speedrun.
King Hippo: Thanks to Hippo Manippo, the TAS Perfect 37.61 has become a lot more consistent (still hard to pull off, but at least it's more consistent). Only 18 Players on Speedrun, Salt included, have gotten it.
Great Tiger: Phase 1 is the only difficult portion with the 4 Frame Perfects you have to land, but at least he always gets up on a 1 count if you get Phase 1 right, meaning you can just buffer an uppercut for Phase 2 and 3 and boom, fight's over. Salt and 18 other players have gotten the 47.48 WR.
Honda 2: As a result of Max Damage Uppercuts, McHazard managed to make an improved Honda 2 Perfect Time with a TAS, a time of 39.97, which Salt would eventually get. JLet and Jefeman82 got it too.
Sandman: Because you can't get stars in Round 1, he takes the longest. The time has been gradually brought down and was stuck at a 2:16.82 (first achieved by Lucandor) for a long while before Salt was able to get perfect luck and execution and get a 2:16.48, another perfect time according to McHazard's TAS.
Mike Tyson: Salt's first World Record Progression (or at least the oldest surviving one) was about the Mike Tyson WR. For a long time, it was believed that 2:05 was the lowest time anyone could get, which Salt would be first to achieve. However, McHazard's TAS revealed that you can start Phase 3 with an uppercut, but Phase 2 has to end at a mid-1:25 at the latest. To this day, Salt is the only known player with recorded proof to achieve this AND a sub-2:05, bringing the time down to a 2:00.61 (decimal time found by old-school frame counting). TAS time is 1:58, but I do believe 1:59 is possible

The sportsmanship that sinister and zallard showed to you, and to each other, everytime the record changed hands is a perfect example of the speed running community. The cheaters seem to grab all the headlines. It's really sad because the community is actually incredibly wholesome and supportive of each other and it's what makes me stick around even if I'm not a very good speedrunner. People are always willing to share strats and help other people get better, even if it means losing their own record. That's incredibly rare when it comes to competition, but you see it time and time again in this community.
