- The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 3 continues!
This tutorial will show you how to easily convert a skeleton spawner dungeon into a farm for experience and drops. We start with the basics of how to prepare a spawner for farming, and how a low effort skeleton farm can still get you a bunch of XP with the right enchantments.
We then discuss options for 'softening' the skeletons up for easier farming, including a soul sand bubble column to push the skeletons upwards and drop them for easy fall damage. But eventually I settle on a redstone solution to the problem - Derpcrafturr's mob softener, a mechanism that allows you to sweep the skeletons into lava while saving the experience orbs and drops!
Along the way we learn how to craft a few basic redstone components like pistons, sticky pistons, dispensers, redstone repeaters, and redstone torches. We learn about how redstone dust travels over non-solid blocks like slabs and glass. Then we decorate the spawner area and add an enchanting table so we can enchant our equipment right by a source of xp levels!

I’ve been playing this game for 10+ years now, and somehow this has been the most refreshing series I’ve found this year. Crazy how after 10 years you can still learn new things from your favorite games 👍🏼
This is what I was thinking as well
I love that you started by giving us a really simple skeleton farm design.
In fact, you could say he gave us a *bare bones* design?
@@punkinlady1039bruh
@@punkinlady1039lol

@@punkinlady1039sans is that you?
I really appreciate you building the "simple" version of the spawner farm first, for those who might not yet have all the resources to gather, and then showing the "upgrade" process. It makes this an easy video to come back to later, when you do have all the materials.
If you're playing on bedrock, replace the redstone repeater with redstone dust. That fixes the pulsing issue.
Thank you! My timing is off with the lava bucket, do you know how to fix that? Basically I step on the pressure plate and it pushes the slabs forward and no lava bucket. I step off of the plate and the lava bucket is used, any help by chance?
@@cyrusmortazavi7941 I have a similar issue. I step on plate, and everything dispenses just fine. I step off, and a pool of lava is still sitting there starting to expand to the floor unless I hop back onto the plate again to cut it off. Eventually i can time it just right to stop spreading lava everywhere, but still annoying.
@@Sublime-zx6ft Did you find a fix for this?
@@j3rry367 nope, I resigned to just get rid of the plate and manually swipe at them. Another helpful tip, I tunneled back and up towards the spawner so that I can afk there a bit. I noticed a lot more skeletons would spawn the closer I was.
@@cyrusmortazavi7941 I have the exact same issue. Bedrock is frustrating.
What’s really impressive for me is how incredibly consistent Pix’s voice is even with cuts, both in volume, quality, and enunciation. Really feels high level
The pure excitement when Pixlriffs uploads can't be expressed! We all love your content, keep the grind going! 👍
Literally splurted out "YES, lets go" when i saw it just now haha
Followed by the sadness after realizing you have to now wait another day for the next episode.
@@jonez77thank god its only one day not one week or more
Yea
Great episode Pix! Quick tip for those following along: Consider raising your difficulty to Hard when at the spawner! It'll increase the number of enchanted armor/bow drops!
While it used to be a thing, I'm glad that you showed that you do not need full durability on bows to be able to use them to craft dispensers with. Dripstone also increases fall damage, in case you don't want or need a full 23 block drop damage the mobs with. You also have that abandoned mineshaft earlier, which I'm sure that you will explore in a future episode. Hope you find at least a 4x cave spider spawner there. GL/GH!
I wish I'd known that about the dripstone before I built a 27-block high water pipe to get mobs from a near-surface spawner at my village high enough. 😅
This series is so professional.
I’m 30 and I’ve been playing since the game’s launch and I’m so impressed by Pix. Even the “hang around after the break” before the mid roll advertisement, then a “welcome back”. So incredibly professional.
Consider powdered snow at the bottom to make them drop slowness arrows
It's a bit more of a process than that. Skeletons have to stew in the powder snow for a bit before converting, and you also want to make sure you have accommodations for skeletons that spawn with leather boots on, because they won't be able to go through the powder snow.
But in essence, it's a great idea and totally worth it if you have a mending bow over infinity, I built one on a server and it was awesome!
You need a cobweb below the powder snow to keep the mob head buried long enough for the conversion.
@@brickbot2.038 I don't get leather boot skeletons enough to worry about them. You can also push them horizontally into the snow instead of a drop.
Actually if their feet are in it, it's enough to turn them into a stray
Just remember not to use fire aspect sword on them. The snow melts when a mob on fire is in it.
30 seconds in and the tutorials already started. I love this no-nonsense approach to tutorials within a let's play.
I've never seen a farm design like that and it looks so cool!! Makes me want to go and find a skeleton/zombie spawner on my world, even if I already have access to endermans, just to try it for myself!
Very good supply of bone meal and enchanted bows
I got a spawner really close to base, still at stone level, and for some reason it spawns a ton of glowsquid too (cant complain too much about it, its nice to have some glow ink). I'm going to try to adjust the farm to be more like this one :) One thing I've done at mine was adding a mini autosmelter (eg, just 1 furnace lol) to make use of the broken bows as fuel while waiting for the spawns
I've had a little glow ink appear in this farm. Glow squid spawn below Y=30.
wait you can use bones a fuel?????
@@TehOof_lord No, but you can use bows.
@@Cheesius ah ok i misread the comment
Yeah I always seperated out the enchanted bows and armor from the other stuff, burned the bows in a smelter and smelted the armor after disenchanting them. Enchanted bows would be kept for combining into mega bows with infinity rather than mending
The best thing about watching the Pix building the redstone spawner is that it’s not a tutorial but more of a step by step explanation of why he’s doing what he’s doing. Great stuff, I’m now going to try that redstone….i will surely die😂
Yay easy farm designs! Definitely more practical than making the killing area deeper down for fall damage and afk-ing near the spawner beforehand, like I used to.
Honestly really happy you're uploading so frequently again, I really enjoy watching a pixlriffs video when I eat lunch!
I know practically nothing about redstone in this game so I’m so excited to learn some from this series as it progresses!
I was JUST going to search up for a Skeleton Farm for my world today and am surprised you uploaded one! Thank you Pix! Definitely going to follow through with this!
I've been playing MC off and on since 2020, I've never seen somebody make a spawner with the pistons like that, it's amazing, fun and different.
I also love that you take the time to break everything down in your videos. Keep up the amazing work man. Subbed.
I was literally about to start making my own skele farm. It will be nice to listen to you explaining how to do it, even if I know how
This design is genius for early game! I've always waited until I got soul sand, but this was game-changing. Well done, Pixlriffs!
This is the most unique skeleton spawner farm I've seen yet. I've been playing Minecraft for 10 years but I still learn new stuff from your survival guide. Keep up the good work Pix!!!
I've never seen a kill chamber setup like that before. Thanks for sharing
I had completely forgotten that redstone on transparent blocks can't travel downwards. even after having played for 10 years i keep learning new things with these series! keep it up with the amazing work you do! :)
I haven't seen all of your videos but I have watched many videos by many creators and this is the first time I have ever seen a mob farm done like this! Definitely going to have to try it out.
I've never seen a skeleton farm like that and it looks so cool!! Makes me want to go and find a skeleton to try it for myself!
I really appreciate the content! Though I've been playing minecraft for quite a few years, I've never been a consistent survival player. Your (newly discovered by me) series has really helped tremendously in learning new tips and tricks and improving the efficiency of my survival world. For this series in particular, I play the videos while I play mc on a separate device, that way I can get some work done on my own world while still learning some new stuff!
This series is tremendous! You make the hard parts of this game easy to follow which is no mean feat.
Yaaaay! Thanks for the video! Love your content since Minecraft Survival Guide Season 2! 🙂
I love waking up to a new survival guide vid. Keep up the good work pix
Have watched every episode of all of the previous series of the Survival Guide! Still enjoy each new one.
Pixlriffs i hope I’m not only one here telling you that your builds are beyond awesome.
And yet again, I've learned something new! I hadn't seen the lava option like that before ! Gonna try this design asap!
Great video, I'm really enjoying the new series! I'd love to hear you do short descriptions of how this thing works alongside the build how-to.
Nice and compact design. Will definitely use this! Love seeing redstone builds being explained like this!
It's 6 am but I'm not complaining new upload!
Love the super simple build start followed by the upgrade, easy to follow and the redstone is nicely explained.
This is far more fun to see then the drop shoot style farm. And no need for early game nether stuff.thanks for this one Pixel I will be making it in my own world as well.
I recently made a Skeleton Grinder myself and decided to give it a themed interior Design. Now it looks like a dark crypt like in Diablo 3 and the drop spot is a central sarcophagus. Its EP 14 if anyone's interested :) Very much appreciated!!
Seriously, you do such a great job of explaining everything involved in what you're doing! PSJr would be proud Im sure :) Keep up the great work! :)
Even after playing this game for 12 years I still enjoy these videos :D
I've been playing Minecraft since 2015; I think my first major version that I used was 1.8.6. I usually spend 4-12 hours each calendar day. However....
I've learned more in this series than almost any other series. Thank you, Pixlriffs
ive been playing this game for years and its rare that i learn something new. today is one of those rare days
That was an interesting bit of redstone, nice job. I'm also very proud of my spawner setup, it has a lava farm, an autosorter and also an autodispenser for excess stuff, it shoots it into lava because I don't need a hundred bows. I like to combine the bows they drop until I have my favourite, and I melt the armour down to nuggets. It's the world's slowest iron farm.
Fantastic video mate. Simple and effective presentation, no-nonsense approach, can totally relate to the slight sidetracking to pick up the resources. Thanks a bunch for this. Keep at it 😎
I don’t usually do mob farms bc I struggle with making them but this tutorial was actually really helpful and easy for me to make thanks for sharing it
I watched the first series but stopped playing minecradt for a while, so i did not watch the second season. I returned to minecraft now and im so glad that I did and that i returned to the channel. Congrats from Brazil.
I had to assume how deep under the water to go to make the mechanism- but this helped a LOT. Thank you!
The rapid jump cuts are new. I don't hate them. But feels fast for pixlriffs
Yeah I agree but the video might be longer. Sometimes I'm like wait, what did he do?
I love these constant uploads although I understand they might be a toll on you since you are on 3 series. ❤❤❤
Whoa! That’s a very cool skeleton system! I’ve been playing for 10+ years and never thought to do something like this. Thank you for the idea! ❤☠️
Hey Pixlriffs a tip that I liked to use with those long ladder drops was instead of having the water block in the floor it was two blocks up and held in place with signs, it still cancels the fall damage but you don't have to swim up and out the water every time.
The signs don’t water log or wash away?
Also Java or bedrock?
@@kevinthielmann9408in both versions, the signs won't wash away
@@kevinthielmann9408you have to use the signs on adjacent block faces from the water to hold it in place
@@TheMrBaconater alright, thank you
@@kevinthielmann9408 in my java games they work the same as fence gates but make a better air block to fall through.
This is a really interesting design. I haven't found a skeleton spawner yet but when I eventually do I think this will be the way to go.
Thanks for making such a great tutorial! I'm sure it's helped a lot of people level up fast.
Excellent tutorial! Those diamond finds were insane
I like your videos so much. Straight proper instructions no wondering around, keep up the good work! Subscribed 🎉
Very well made video, Pix! Great explanation! I want that diamond lick you had!
That's such a clever design, simple but efficient! I've always struggled with making skeleton farms but I've loved them once they're finished. Bonemeal is a very powerful item in the game, don't miss out on this farm if you're a new player.
i just found a smelly spawner yesterday and i needed a good tutorial for it lol
perfect timing, Pix!
oH so good ! You always manage to explain things so that I understand. I will definitely try this !
loving this series :D
Hello 😊😊
I usually go the water elevator route, but I really like the lava burner setup. You don't need soul sand and it's more compact. Gonna give this one a go in my world
Happy to be binging these after the update!
If I ever had to describe what 'pumping out content' meant to a layman I would just show them the release times of this series of videos
This is a compliment
That's a pretty cool design to weaken the skeletons without soul sand. I have thought about a similar concept, but I thought your hit had to be the final blow for it to count as your kill. Thanks for the new info!
I have to build this. It looks perfect. Can't wait for the next episode.
I have just built one too! It was exciting to see you build it!
Love this design. Since you found some amethyst earlier, you could consider using some tinted glass so that you can see the spawner working!
I'm back after making this xp farm in my own world... found a skeleton spawner not too far from home, though it's located at -20 or so... quite a trip down. Had to block off my ladder as it passed through caves three times! A nice build. I like the glass blocks so we can watch the skellies burn after you hit them. Gotta get used to the dance on the pressure plate to turn it off and on. But this was satisfying, and not too hard--worked correctly the first time through! Next up, decorating the place and making it nice.
I will definetly try that redstone contraption to one hit skeletons in my spawner! Awesome vid pix!
I've made a skeleton spawner farm before but the lava and the slab on the spawner are definitely things I'll have to try to make mine more efficient!
Hi, Pixilriffs. Thank you for the tutorial. I've been looking for a way to fix my existing skeleton farm. This is exactly what I needed. Keep up the awesome work. And, take care. o/
I forgot just how breakneck your pace of episode release is for the survival guides. You're a goddamn high quality video machine! A machine, i tells ya!
Nice build and a classic lava design.
I built something similar with the skeleton spawners deeper in that cave system, but very nearby the house build. For the Spider example, go exploring the caves on that Cherry Grove Mountain, you'll be surprised what is literally sitting in view.
Last skeleton/xp farm setup I made involved a water slide and a soul campfire at the bottom, with hoppers and chests to collect what I wanted... and a simple lava disposal pit to the side for things I didn't. I like this setup though, and may try it in my current world. I've found a few monster spawners in the unreasonably large cave system under my home.
Amazing episodes, this is quite exciting
Love this u get right into it!
Thanks for showing different design. Will have to try this out. Also didn’t know you oiling be a certain distant away.
Just finished my own skeleton spawner farm (and perhaps the first spawner farm I've ever made). Works like a charm! Just need to remember some mobs will spawn with enchanted armor. I got a good spook when a skeleton with Thorns showed up. I thought I got hit by one of them even though I was sure I had set it up right.
Yet again, Bedrock has some slight differences:
Spawners on Bedrock only spawn mobs up to a "taxicab" distance of 4 blocks away: that is, 4 blocks away in straight lines, but with the ends of those lines connected diagonally to form a diamond shape. The one block above and below rule still applies.
You can't currently (i.e. in 1.20.0) sneak under slabs on Bedrock, but that should be changing soon.
First episode in a long time where he doesn’t hope we are all having a good day 😢
thank you so much for this video, genuinely helped me with my "Skelefarm" in my Grand World
Loving the daily videos
We've been playing with my son for 1.5 years, and Pixelriffs is an absolute reference : informative, the builds work, and it's a goldmine of knowledge about the game itself. Many many thanks !
Btw : would you consider enabling the "thanks" feature in CZcams ?
Wow... that's a lot of instructions. I'll rewatch this when I'm ready for my skeleton xp farm. :-) My grandson built an xp farm way back years ago. It was a blaze - it was really neat. I am slow when it comes to the red stone. LOL I'm gonna make one of these though.
Amazing 👏 I'll give this design a try 😊
The lava thing is brilliant!!
Just yesterday I found a skele spawner and I thought, I'll make a farm, pretty sure I know how, I wake up and see the notification, thank you pix, it's as if it was meant to be
Love this series. Thanks so much for the guides. I built the spawner but I have ran into an occasional issue where the lava empties out of the bucket and pours everywhere. It is not every time just seems to happen randomly. Rewatched the video multiple times but cannot see where I went wrong.
This reminds me of the first spawner I found and made a farm of. It was actually a double spawner with a skeleton and a zombie spawner almost stacked on each other.
Youre the best bro ❤❤
Best voice on CZcams....love your videos
DerpCrafturr!! I've been using his shower forever!!!! Got to play a bit to work with the latest MC version, but it always gets a lol. His snow golem mob farm is fun too. Thanks for the world download and the memories, BTW you can use a dead chicken to kill mobs with the mob softener
You upload at 5am my time so when i wake up i can start watching
Gday. I've had some success with putting pointed dripstone that they fall on. It does damage and will stop zombie kids too. Love your vids
Really enjoying this season. Looks like you are as well.
I was gonna watch another tutorial like im used to but this is perfectly timed lol
Just want to say thank you. Ive been playing for 147 hours now destroyed my first spawner coz i didnt know as im new yes im 38 play it coz of my kids but now 147 hours in amd enjoying it lol but the first couple i tried took ages and never got it to work this 1 is perfect for someone like me liked and subscribed because of this 👌👌
Very neat redstone
Hey @pixlriffs, you're going to need to go back to the skelly farm and replace the wood with stone - proximity to the lava keeps catching it on fire breaking the Redstone.
For greater efficiency, the initial spawning room should be 9x9x9. That is the region the spawner will produce skeletons. But there is a maximum number of mobs that can be inside that area before the spawner turns itself 'off' until some leave the region. To get around that restriction, once you've dug out the 9x9x9 area centered on the spawner, dig the chamber 2 blocks lower. That way when skeleton's spawn they drop outside of the region and their numbers don't count towards the spawning limit, and you produce more mobs.
The spawning region is 9x3x9, and the spawner will take a minimum of 10 seconds before it checks a 9x9x9 area and attempts to spawn more skeletons. The water will easily clear them within that time, so there's no reason to dig it out any deeper than that.
@@Pixlriffs The presence checking area is 9x9x9, though, and the mob limit is 6 for the spawned type. That's why some people recommend leaving 6 blocks of space below the spawner, as mobs can sometimes take more time to clear the area than the spawner's random delay, which is roughly between 10 and 40 seconds.
