- This video is on a 1998 Chevy K 1500 with a erratic gas/fuel gauge the bounces and does not read correctly. I take you through the full process of removing the gauge cluster and removing the gas gauge driver motor and spray silicone spray in the driver motor to clean it up and also lube it up by doing this it improved the gas needle reading tremendously and was working correctly for two years until we sold the truck. I hope this will help you in your gas/fuel gauge repair on any mid 90s Chevy vehicle. Thanks for watching check out my channel.

While I wanted to see the process of you disassembling the gauge itself, you had so much important information, that I didn't know I needed. Thank you so much 😊
I bought a 1998 Suburban K1500 gasoline. Same issue with gas gauge buzzing. Plus needle shows past full when full and 1/2 when it's really empty. I'll try this in the summer. Thanks for the post.
It looks like the ground on your fuel pump is the problem
I have a automotive scan tool that has a gauge alignment part for the gauges that is set in the ECM
Awesome!! Thanks!!
Thank you , I just bought a 99 Tahoe and the fuel gauge is erratic. I also thought it might be the fuel sending unit . I’ll try this first . Cheers stay safe
Thanks for watching!!!!
i can't find info anywhere on this..maybe you can help but how exactly do you recalibrate the speedometer needle. You said you push it in to set it while using phone speedo but do you have to pull it out to move it to 20 and then push it? I need to do this but dont want to break it.
Slide a plastic fork under fuel needle to pop it off gauge cluster, use phone drive 20mph and then push fuel needle back on gauge cluster on the 20mph position.
@@jeepmanking3577 nice..thank you!!!
Hope it helps, thanks for watching
Lol fuel needle, I should have said Speedo needle!!!
today i'm playing w/ my fuel gauge(1998) in the dash went to pic n pull and picked up a couple air core motors... now finding the 3 i picked up are all spinning to freely ( no drag / damping fluid to slow them down) just spin freely...
My question is does anyone know if the all 4 of the air core motor. in a 95-99 trucks are the same...or can i only use the fuel one for fuel oil for oil...ect.....tia
That’s a good question, but I can’t answer that one. Does the motor have a number on the case? If so this may help to compare to the ones that came out of yours.
@@jeepmanking3577 my original reads F37 09 28...These others i picked up read F 3G 08 20 , F 1G 15 66
Try googling the part number and see what comes up may help you. Just a thought
You can not swap them out for each other tho it will thru it all off
Will this also work on the water temp. Gauge
Well i watched the rest of the video and got My answer
Well I don’t know but they are very similar.
My obs will read "empty" but I'll still have 5 or 6 gallons left ...will this fix that issue?
Does your gauge needle jump around? It might be the fuel sending unit in your tank.
@@jeepmanking3577 no it doesn't jump just clearly not reading correctly
@@cluewyatt172 while filling the tank watch when the needle gets to the full mark. Then see how much more gas it takes for the nozzle to kick off. It could be worse you could run out of gas before you get to the empty mark. I would say it’s the sending unit in your tank. You could take needle off gauge and reposition so when it is on E it is empty.
@@jeepmanking3577 ty I'll try that
I have... what may be a dumb question. Do you think WD-40 will work?
I don’t know for sure, I just know WD-40 will leave a oily residue, when silicone spray will not.
@@jeepmanking3577 Thank you so much Good Sir!
Show how you take that out of the cluster..
Angel Garcia it’s really simple, take bezel around gauges off four screws hold cluster in and take off connectors.. I would buy new step motors from eBay and install new ones fuel gauge started jumping around after a few months.
Hi, has the fuel gauge been working correctly since making this video?
JJMax it’s not perfect but its a lot better. I believe the part is called a Step Motor..
JJMax It is called a stepper motor if it doesn’t work for you EBay sells them for about $40
@@jeepmanking3577 my 98 s10 v6 fuel light comes on when tank is full will this make my truck shut off and think it's out of gas even though it has gas
Michael Root I am not familiar with that problem, this truck doesn’t have a light that comes on. Sorry not really a help on this one. Thanks for watching!!
@@jeepmanking3577 No these are called air core motors each motor has a code on them t for temp F for fuel and so on.
Air core
The gauge motors are called air core stepper motor.
Mine literally just started spinning in a circle when I went for a cruise.
You didn't show how you disassembled the gauge cluster
It’s really simple…
any update on this? is the gauge still working?
It worked for about a year and a half then my son sold his truck. Thanks for watching.
@@jeepmanking3577 I saw another video where they filled the motor with some kind of food grade silicon with a syringe. Your way looks easier. My only issue is my gauge reads empty when off and full when you start it, with the occasional trip back to empty.
@@julesgoulet7868 I think you may have a fuel sending unit issue or a ground in the wiring.
All you need is a magnet buddy
Tell me more!!!
When fuel gauge is erratic is fuel sending unit , remove tank replace fuel pump assembly (around $200 ) replace fuel filter as well and problem solved
Wrong. On these it's the stepper motor for the gauge. They dry out
