A female character that I love and who is very underrated is Vin from The Mitsborn Trilogy. There are so many great things about her about her that no one appreciates: the fact that she is someone who is inherently kind despite her tragic past. She is an excellent teacher, whether teaching Kelsier that not all nobles are evil; to Tensoon teaching him about friendship, the kindness in human beings and the importance of trusting others; and Elend teaching him that both facets (that of Scholar and that of Emperor) are essential parts of him. Furthermore, Vin's overcoming of his traumas is very inspiring.

I've just finished reading Jackalope Wives and Other Stories by T Kingfisher and they are all fantasy/folklore/fairytale inspired stories with strong female characters with the added bonus that many are older women.

Maggie, Ox's mum, is equally as strong as Elizabeth in my opinion, if not more so. Maggie was abused by her husband, then he left her with almost nothing but she still had Ox to raise, and he sure didn't make it easy when he came along and told her that his new best friends were all werewolves. But she took it all in stride because she loved him, and I won't say anything because spoilers, but you know she made some real sacrifices so that Ox could live the life he wanted. For me, Maggie is the ultimate example of a strong female character because she's not special in any way - she's just a normal person, trying her best in a world that can be hard. I think it's telling that, even though Ox always saw Thomas as his father, and even though he loved Elizabeth, she never superseded Maggie's place as Ox's mother, even after everything that went down.
