After Nearly 50 Years As the Army's Workhorse, The Venerable Kiowa Helicopter Is Taking Flight Again

  • The distinctive and venerable OH-58 Kiowa helicopter, mothballed and grounded in the dry desert of Arizona, after being retired from U.S. Army service with almost 50 years of service, is finding its wings again in Greece.
    The OH-58 is a single-engine, single-rotor military helicopter used primarily for observation, utility, and direct fire support. The OH-58D Kiowa Warrior version is primarily used as a light attack and armed reconnaissance helicopter to support troops fighting on the ground.

    I went to Fort Rucker Alabama helicopter mechanic school. I still recall the torques on the main rotor drive shaft. 50 to 60 inch pounds. I removed engines and transmissions. Some in my platoon scoped the main rotor blades. Some used a long pole with masking tape to track the blades . I flew one mile in a Bell OH/ 58 helicopter with a test pilot with me. It was lots of fun. You just must remember a helicopter can give out at any time . Parts some times fail. So some helicopter crashes are mechanical or pilot error . Some pilots fly into telephone wires. Some get lost in the clouds. Because they do not use air traffic control. Or some are not trained on instrument flying only. So they do not know how to fly at night. Some have problems when flying into the clouds. This has caused lots and lots of helecopter crashes. Pilots get confused and forget exactly where they are at. They don't know what direction they are going. If I was a helecopter pilot would avoid flying into the clouds if at all possible. This is exactly what happened to a very experienced helicopter pilot that was flying Lacker basket ball player , Coby Brayant . The helicopter pilots was in a big hurry to fly Coby Brayant to a special occassion . The pilot flew into a cloud and hit a rock mountain and as a result the helicopter crashed. The Holy Bible says : Haste makes waste. I would never fly into a cloud if I was a helicopter pilot . Its better to know exactly where you are at all times. Plus if possible to see , what is in front . What is behind. What is left and what is to the right of you. My pilot flew into the side of a volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii . He was only 19 years old . He was just out of flight school. Coincidently as my pilot was doing his pre-flight inspection . As I was sitting in the cockpit seat. I heard a strong voice three times. The voice said," DON'T FLY"!. I heard this strong voice three times. When the pilot finished his pre-flight . I asked the pilot if I could sit in a truck I was not feeling very good. I was sitting on the floor of a truck. About ten minutes later it sounded like a lawn mower hitting a rock. My pilot crashed ito the side of the volcano on the Big Island in Hawaii. So I believe in God and angels. God will speak to us. Its up to us to ,liston or to hear His voice. Or pay the consequences.

    I flew all models of the Kiowa, OH-58 A/C/C+ and of course the Kiowa Warrior. I have over 6,000 hours in the Kiowa Warrior. The Kiowa Warrior has more combat hours than any other modern Army helicopter, and it had the highest operational readiness rate in all of aviation, the things just didn't break. Of course the Army in it's infinite wisdom got rid of the Kiowa Warrior because it was only a single engine aircraft, a huge mistake. They passed the mission of the Kiowa onto the Apache, a helicopter with the worst operational readiness rate. I miss flying the KW, it was a great aircraft as long as you knew its limitations. There wasn't a single mission the KW couldn't accomplish even against the Apache. Now the Army will be waiting for another two decades before they come up with a replacement for the KW, and I guarantee it will be a tech nightmare for maintainers and will have an abyssal OR rate like the Apache.

    the title is kind of misleading. The OH-58 was rolled out in the late 1960s and early 1970s, but the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior models were made in the late 1980s and in the 1990s. The D_Model birds sold to Greece are the newest, and were refurbished in the 1990s and 2000s.

    • @Lonewolf6565
      @Lonewolf6565 Před 3 lety +1

      The US has replaced them in service with the Apache 64E Guardian and UAVs. In objective terms the Kiowas are obsolete in both technology and how the Army manages reconnaissance missions. The Kiowa fleet was slated to be sold via military aide programs from the start as soon as the decision was made to retire them. Those programs are intended to give US strategic allies military equipment they wouldnt otherwise be able to afford. The Greek government is broke and the country bankrupted a few years ago and has been rebuilding itself since. Selling part of the Kiowa fleet to them gets them equipment they need that they can actually afford. And yes it save on storage costs, the boneyards cost the US billions of dollars a year to maintain. The vehicles in those yards are kept nearly operational and arent left to rot. A country like Greece would get accepted into that program where as a country like Saudi Arabia would be told to buy brand new.
