    Game Room reviews the Sega Saturn video game console! Released in 1995 to the US market, this 1996 vintage Sega Saturn shows the pure solid construction and beauty of this underrated and nearly forgotten game console. Sega purists know about the Saturn of course, as well as the Master System, Dreamcast and Sega Genesis. But what about everyone else? This is the game system that has Panzer Dragoon and Darius Gaiden and Radiant Silvergun! The Sega Saturn has awesome controllers and plays games from Japan with a 4 in 1 converter and memory card. The Saturn has Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona USA! What happened to make the Saturn die off so soon when so much potential was left untapped. The Saturn is remembered by many as a SHMUP video game system with awesome 2D rendering and gameplay, perhaps that is its lasting shining legacy. Watch the Classic Game Room hardware review of the Sega Saturn game system with HD footage of the console in high definition. Play import shooters on the Sega Saturn with ease and all of the awesome Western releases, all being reviewed by CGRHD.

    The only kinds of people that are saying "Fuck you, Sega fanboy", are tiny tots that weren't alive and well during SEGA's most successful era. Even the SNES fans acknowledge how awesome the Genesis was in the day. A lot of us owned both machines!

      I love the Saturn. I loved the fact that you could pause a part of a song and repeat it. I learned to play the bass parts on so many songs with the help of my Saturn. I love the Genesis and the entire 16 bit era. In Japan the Saturn continued to do well where it failed here. Even when the Dreamcast came out. Which failed in Japan.

      LMAO, I swear it's an endless cycle. These games just keep on getting more and more expensive. Even though PDS goes for like 2 grand now we are gonna look back on how cheap that was 10 years from now when it's probably $20,000 at that point.

    I was one of the many who grew up mainly with Nintendo (NES/SNES) then jumped ship to Sony and Microsoft when they first came onto the scene. From what I have noticed, Sega fans seem to be among the MOST LOYAL to a company and among the most knowledgeable about gaming in general. My first Sega console was the Dreamcast and I just recently got my first Saturn. I am slowly beginning to see why all the devotion.

    • @Domspun
      @Domspun Před 8 lety +5

      +G Ryen Almost the same here. I got a Dreamcast in 2000 and I loved it, even if I had a PS2. I got a Saturn a couple of years ago out of curiosity and got a great deal on a huge bundle. I like some games, but I do not love it as much as the Dreamcast. The one I don't get is the Genesis. I've been trying to like it for 25 years and I still don't get it. Back in the day I used to play with my friend for the blood in Mortal Kombat and play the best version of NHL hockey until 95 on PC(great, but buggy), but did not convinced me to buy one. I guess it appeals to a certain type of gamer!?

    I'm not really that much of a Sega fan but I owned a Saturn for some reason. I realized pretty immediately "I should have bought a PS." I will say that gen 1 "fat" saturn controller was and still is _the best_ no-analog-stick gamepad ever made. I especially like the mouse clicker shoulder buttons. Sometimes I would to figure out how to mod the shell of the thing to be a PC gamepad. But I don't want to ruin it. So it will continue to collect dust instead. I actually own the analog stick one as well but have used it extensively enough to know how good it is.

    The Sega Saturn will always be my number 1. Mainly because I was my first game console. I had a model 1 to begin with but unfortunately the drive bit the dust. I was fortunate enough to find a model 2 at a flea market for 45 bucks and the guy let me pick out three games as a deal. That was like 5 years ago and it still works beautifully. I need more games tho. I only have 4..

    In my opinion, if they would use that cartridge slot to play old genesis and 32x and cd rom could play sega cd games, this console could be hit. Still dont understand, why dont they use that slot. Backward compactible is great aspect. If only, If only.

      Sometimes I wonder if compatibility with Genesis and 32X games was planned in the early stages of the Saturn's development. Almost every time I see the cartridge slot in the back, it takes about a microsecond to remember that it's for memory units and RAM expansion, not game cartridges.

    I think the Sega Saturn and 32X might have sold better had they made the Saturn backwards compatible with Mega Drive, Mega CD and 32X games; and made the Mega Drive, Mega CD and 32X combination forwards compatible with the Saturn disks. That way, people new to Sega games could buy a Saturn while those who already had a Mega Drive and its add ons could stick with their old hardware.

  • @thelovebat
    @thelovebat Před 8 lety +4

    The one issue I have with the review is that he only talked about a small genre of the games available with the Saturn, when a number of the best games for it weren't featured in the review (including some games that were close to having a North American release, like Hideo Kojima's Policenauts). He also talked about the price of Saturn games being affordable, but for the good games released in North America most of the good games for the system go for $100+ on Ebay now (back in 2009 the games weren't exactly cheap either), and Panzer Dragoon Saga is insanely expensive to buy even though it's arguably the best game on the console, and considered one of the best RPGs ever created. Other offerings like the games Working Designs brought over can also be a bit expensive too, as are a number of games on the Sega CD. Sega Saturn & Sega CD games (at least the good games) tend to be really expensive, the long box cases for the games have a tendency to crack or get damaged easily, and the old CD-rom discs are more prone to scratching than the consoles to come afterward. With the Genesis you have the traditional cartridges which will last a long time, and plastic cases (for most games). With the Dreamcast you have a sturdy machine and traditional plastic CD cases that don't break so easily, and the games are far more common so if one happens to get wear and tear to the point it won't work, it's much cheaper to find a replacement. The Saturn and the Sega CD were actually decent consoles, but nowadays the biggest problem is buying the games for it since they're uncommon, higher in price, and the Saturn hardware makes emulation really difficult too.

    I think the SEGA Saturn world have done better if:
    1) It could play Genesis via the slot in the back (Were the Action Replay was)
    2) It could play 32X games via the slot in the back (Were the Action Replay was)
    3) It could play SEGA CD games
    4) It had a memory card that plugged in to a controller port like the PlayStation 1, or in the slot in the back (Were the Action Replay was)

    I wish I still had a Sega Saturn to this day because I missed out on a lot of good games for it. I mean, sure, the console didn't have that many Sonic the Hedgehog games, but it had tons of fighting games from Capcom, Sega, SNK, the Mortal Kombat series, Dead or Alive 1 and some other Saturn games that I never heard of. And the superior RAM cartridge that the Saturn had was the Action Replay Plus cartridge, which was a 3-things-in-1 device, meaning that it would allow you to perform cheats in your Saturn games, save your Saturn's game data and break the region encoding allowing you play imported games on any Sega Saturn model of your choice, which was awesome and the Saturn was also backwards-compatible with music CDs as well.

      +AgentCell I hear ya. The Saturn I can understand because Sega totally blew the launch, but the Dreamcast felt like it had so much more potential and wasn't an outright failure. Unfortunately many potential DC owners fell for Sony's genius marketing and ended up waiting for the PS2 and skipping the DC altogether. It's sad.

    • @DennisForstner
      @DennisForstner Před 8 lety

      It was more successful in Japan, it's one of the few consoles people actively recommend importing for because most of its best games, and there are alot of them, came out in Japan. Unless you can read Japanese I suggest shopping for the Playstation for the rpgs, alot of them made it to that console in the States, but there are plenty of other titles to play that don't have much of a language barrier.

    • @gabrielmassa
      @gabrielmassa Před 8 lety +1

      +AgentCell Saturn had quality problem it's very first games. Polygon pop-up, unfinished games, low quality and few games. When PS1 arrived it launch with 40 games, kind of the same amount Saturn had with 1 year of life, and promised more 40 ins next few months. Also the PS1 was focused in 3D games. Saturn remake some games hat should be good but was badly ported like Vitua Fighter and Daytona (remake as the REMIX and CCE versions) tho prove it's potential, but was too late. On Dreamcast SEGA had already built a bad reputation and soon after it came PS2 using DVD.

    • @DH1986
      @DH1986 Před 8 lety +4

      +TrollBuster The Dreamcast launched at $199, so for an extra $100 you got a console with marginally better graphics and the ability to play DVD's. Sega also pissed of EA and they refused to make games for the console ( No Madden, NBA Live) + a lot of people were worried that Sega would ditch them after 2 years like they did on the Sega Cd, 32X, and Saturn. Which is a shame, because watching the opening sequence to Sonic Adventure and playing the first level w/ the killer whale practically changed my life.

    • @Mistraker
      @Mistraker Před 8 lety

      +AgentCell Well, part of it was a bad launch, and part of it was the fact that they misjudged the market, which was more interested in 3d titles. While the Saturn could do 3d graphics, it not nearly as good at it as the PS1, and porting over to the Saturn was made difficult by the fact that the Saturn renders with squares, rather than triangles.
      The last, and probably most fatal part of the Saturn's failure was basic hardware confusion. Sega had released the Genesis, followed by the Sega CD, and then the 32x. Beyond which, they had three different versions of the Genesis (four if you count the Nomad, which claimed the souls of countless innocent AA batteries), and various combinations like the third party JVC X'Eye and the CDX (which could also be used as a portable CD player). Did you say you wanted a IBM compatible PC with Sega hardware pointlessly shoehorned in? Why, then you need an Amstrad built Sega TeraDrive!
      Complicating things even more is that not everything worked with everything else. It was more than a little confusing to consumers, and the fact that they kept selling these previous versions after the Saturn came out (despite not supporting all of them with continued game development) caused people to not know which thing they should buy. Nintendo watched this unfold, and quietly smothered their CD add-on project with a pillow, which, due to their somewhat underhanded dealings, led to the fantastically successful Playstation console being created, and also the soiled, unloved afterbirth that was the Philips CD-i.
      So, after all this, the Saturn came out, and while it was well built, and was a 2d powerhouse, people either kept using their prior Sega hardware, or more likely, purchased a PS1. The effect of the consumer confusion, coupled with Sega abandoning hardware people had dropped a fair amount of cash to purchase, caused distrust that was fatal to not just the Saturn, but also the Dreamcast.
      I love my Saturn, by the way. I love the weird way it saves games with volatile memory and a battery just like a cartridge (also used by the Sega CD). I love the weird "3d controller" with the bizarre round shape and weird wiggly analog nipple, and the fact that you have to switch between the stick and the d-pad, and that the cord can unplug from the controller. I like the varied solutions to problems before we'd all agreed on what the best way to do things is. Sort of the way phones and PDAs used to come in all sorts of strange combinations before we all decided that boring rectangles with touchscreens were the way to go. This is why I'm a collector, especially of odd, unpopular hardware.

It had the best controller, the best sound chip, some of the best exclusive titles, the most affordable way to browse the web via the NetLink attachment, and if a developer took the time to learn how to code for it games could look at least equal to the PlayStation's offerings. Does anyone remember PowerSlave? Or how about Duke Nukem 3D?

      The Saturn was also pretty difficult to program for and was dropped with little to no warning at a time when the 32X was being hyped as the future of Sega (this issue itself was due to poor relations and poor communication between Sega's Japanese and American divisions). The Saturn was actually pretty popular in Japan, in no small part thanks to the Segata Sanshiro ad campaign, so at least there's that.

    Man... Nostalgia... I remember getting a Saturn when it was kinda new.. It came bundled with Virtua cop, Virtua Fighter 2 & Daytona USA. Great arcade ports at the time the only other games I remember were Virtual-On, Alien Trilogy (which scared the shit out of me when I was 7) & Bug! Too! Which is a super rare 3D Platformer that no one talks about. The Saturn was probably SEGA's weakest console.

    • @mikediloreto5965
      @mikediloreto5965 Před 9 lety +1

      I actually think it's one of their strongest consoles with some of their best games. Outstanding arcade ports from all developers like Treasure's "Radiant Silvergun", the Capcom CPS fighting games like the Street Fighter Alpha series, the X-Men fighting games, and the Marvel Super Hero games, the great library of Shoot'em Ups, such as Salamander, Dodonpachi, Galactic Attack, and a whole lot more.
      Also, the hardware is very well made. Granted the old Sega's were built fairly well, this thing is built like a fricken tank. The best part is the CD-ROM drive, which is very well put together, and you're almost guaranteed to have your system work. Plus the power cables and video cables are pretty cheap and easy to come by. Plus the controllers: the Model 1 & 2 controllers are awesome, the Mission Stick is pretty cool, and the Virtua Stick is really cool for shooters.
      I like the system a lot, but I'm split between this and the Genesis for favorite Sega System

      Dreamcast is overrated, Saturn and Genesis are the best Sega consoles.
      Also, if you think Saturn didn't have third party support, i advise you to look at the Japanese game library to educate yourself: Capcom, Konami, Atlus, Taito, SNK, Treasure, Technosoft, Hudson, Camelot, Game arts etc. those aren't good enough for you?, i think that's a much better third party support than for exaxmple, Nintendo 64.

    • @BIGGIEDEVIL
      @BIGGIEDEVIL Před 9 lety

      Marcel Weber the 64 outsold the saturn by a land slide! ea pulled there support of the system and so did many other big third party supporters. yes the dreamcast did have some but most if not all the games that where "good" came from first party support SEGA not anywhere else

    • @Maru96
      @Maru96 Před 9 lety

      BIGGIEDEVIL
      Who cares about western developers support, Saturn on Japan had a lot of great third party support and outsold the 64 there, Saturn doubles the n64's game library. I can understand not liking the Saturn back then being american, but today it's pretty easy to buy import, so saying it was a bad console is just dumb.

    • @Maru96
      @Maru96 Před 9 lety +1
