  • Classic Game Room HD reviews the NEC Turbografx-16 video game console (also known as the PC-Engine in Japan, although there are differences). Released in 1989 in the U.S. the Turbografx-16 has a number of exclusive titles like Blazing Lazers and Bonk's Adventure, many of which are now available for the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console.

    Awesome system! Had one of these when I was growing up, but didn't have many games for it and it unfortunately died. Found one again for $250 with 18 games plus 5 I purchased afterwards, lots of awesome games I had missed out on this system. TurboGrafx 16 RULES!

    My mother had this old console back when I was little. Her favorite game was Bonk.

    What's really mind blowing is that the PC-Engine was INSANELY popular in Japan, but only had a miniscule following in the United States where the Sega Genesis dominated for the better half of the 90's. Like with the Master System, if more third parties had been invested in developing software for it, the playing ground could have been completely level I assure you

    • @DennisForstner
      @DennisForstner Před 8 lety +6

      Best just to import a PC Engine, it's substantially cheaper and the games are as well

    • @TheRetroRenegade
      @TheRetroRenegade Před 8 lety +7

      +Dennis Forstner I'm not sure if the PC Engine is even that much more affordable these days. I mean, they do cost less overall on ebay, but the more people want to collect for the Turbografx 16, the more people will be drawn to the PC Engine to save money and then the prices will go up. Why didn't I get a Turbografx like three years ago?

    This is def a rare console
    I have never come across any games nor consoles in my 5 year game chasing in Florida in the wild , I've seen one console in one store and I purchased it today in the original box for $115 , doesn't have the back piece nor Keith courage but works fine and is in nice shape , glad to get this , I only want splatterhouse, bonks adventure , bonks revenge , space harrier and some Shooters like blazing Lazers, $115 might sound like A lot to some people but I have wanted this for a while and never find this console and when it was boxed I knew I had to have it

    • @ronsmith4325
      @ronsmith4325 Před 8 lety +3

      +Retrosys Dont look online - everything is overpriced. If you have a local used games store, you might be in luck. I recently picked up NES, SNES and PS2 consoles for 100 total. Games were in the 1-3 dollar range and most came with their original packaging and manuals... If you are trying to buy on ebay, you are going to get screwed. TurboGrafx I'd expect would be a little bit more expensive since it's not as common as the ones I mentioned, but still.. the guys trying to sell classic consoles for $300-400 just because they can are out to lunch.

      For what I understand, the TG16 PAL version is just an US TG version modified to run on pal countries .. it runs all US library (there is no PAL turbografx library anyways) it has the cd ad output, so I thinhk it will work just fine with the US CD addon

    I remember when everyone was deciding to upgrade from the NES to either Genesis or TG-16. I chose the Genny the Christmas after its release. But later in the new year I went to a friend's house who had bought a TG-16 and I was amazed with the crips sounds and graphics of Keith Courage! Two months later I bought my own Turbo and I ended up collecting way more games for it than my Sega. Loved TG-16 to death! Still have mine and my complete game library! But of course the SNES bested them both!!

    In response to the no RCA video and sound. Yes one could have it as i bought one and still have it. Was called the Turbo Booster. was a plug in for the back and gave one a yellow red and white rca style connection. was a nice improvement in sound and video. plus to those who thought it was a 8 bit , no it was TWO 8 bit processors hence 16. Still as always dud your videos are awesome. !!

    The console itself actually has composite and stereo output right there on the back plane, that you showed in the video. It's just that the greedy NEC made customers buy the "booster" or "booster plus" to get access to it. So it do actually have it. It also had RGB out on those pins too.

    For your line out composite/stereo needs without having to buy the the TurboGrafx CD. They were called the TurboBooster (adding only AV out) or the Booster Plus with the same features and system hosted memory backup. Many games with password save also had a "File Cabinet" feature which the TurboBooster Plus or Turbo CD expansion had. No password nightmares since the HuCards lacked battery backup obviously. The TG16 was a powerful system and a shooters dream, the best of em' never made it to Wii.

    Konami did make Dracula X for it in Japan. Capcom games were ported to it by NEC (again, in Japan). There were tons of great games for it in Japan, but NEC was hesitant to release them (like the rpg's) in the US. Not only that, Nintendo locked companies from releasing the same game for competing systems in the US. I have a TurboDuo with quite a few Japanese and US games. Great system!

    there was an add on called the "Turbo-booster" that connected to the back that gave it composite video out and stereo output.

    I don't know why people were so obsessed over the number of bits. The primary thing 16-bits provided you with in that era was an increased color palette - which the TG-16 accomplished with its GPU. The CPU itself was 8-bit, but it was a rather fast 8-bit processor, and the games generally weren't hindered by it. Bits /= speed. For instance, most games on the N64 actually ran almost all of their instructions in 32-bit, because 64-bit was actually slower for most purposes at that time.

    Connecting RF through a VCR for Composite? Does that really work/upgrade the video signal? There for no need for Turbo Booster?
