    I was there and took my own set of videos. The Grey haried man is Gert Ritner of the 12th SS Panzer Division and a friend of mine. He was placeing flowers to honor Wittman and his crew. In addition he and Dave Jenkins, another friend of mine are seen near the end of the video placing a large cloth banner, white wreath, and a single while rose on the request of Wittmans wife whom he was married to from March 1944 until his death on August 8th. I contiue to place a white rose for her as well. It's time to come together. Gert later played a tune to honor these fallen men. Gert was only 19 when he was realeased from the Allied POW camp. He was a motorcycle dispatch messanger rider in the 12th SS. He had just left the commander Fritz Witt's HQ before it was bombed and Witt was killed. Kurt (Panzer) Meyer then became the division commander. I go to Normandie each year and have been now 23 times. I honor all veterans including mostly Americans and British. However, one must remember that polititions start wars, not simple soldiers. Also I respect the great sacrifices of all who fought in the resistance movements and our other allies to include of course the Russians. War in my experience as a100% disabled combat veteran is young men on all sides trying to kill other young men who in any other situation would have much in common, and in most cases carry mutual respect for one another. That is the greatest most obvious point about the total insanity of war.

      @@drs-Rigo-Reus Gert Rittner. He was a motorcycle dispatch rider in the 12th SS Panzer Division, commanded by Frits Witt until his death on 14 June and then Kurt [ Panzer] Meyer. Kurt was 19 when released from the Allied Prison camp. He had volunteered for the 12 SS, went through training, fought in Normandie, and was 19 when released from camp. He is a fine person. It's also coming out now that Panzer Meyer never ordered the shooting of Canadian Prisoners at the Ardenne Abbey nor did Fritz Witt. He admitted that the deed was done, but he never ordered it nor was he able to find out who did the shooting. He was up at the front and not at the Abbey which was not the Division HQ, but a forward obeservation location. I have been there and seen the monuments to the shot soldiers.

      Respect Gene for doing this for all those poor boys and young men, German and Allies. Do you know what happens with all the artifacts pictures etcetera that were placed at Wittmann,s grave trhougout all the years. I even saw copies of the knights cross picture portraits and much much more. I think one could fill a museum with them but this will probably not be the case. The French authorities will never allow this. Their defeat in 1940 when their army was basecly routed still hurts and angers them. They have never really gotten over this humiliating defeat

      His crew is not burried with him. There cannot have been left much of Wittmann,s body after his tank was blown of. His remains were found in the early eightees. Probably fitted in a small box.

      Hello Joe. This took place several years ago before the 70th Anniversary Of D-Day. I have corresponded with Gert Rittner. At the time Michael Wittman's wife was still alive and may still be. I took my own videos when Gert was there again most likely after this video was taken. He also always placed a white rose at the site for Michael Wittman's wife and I do this also each June as well as rose tributes all over Normandie for American Soldiers, German, and British. Stay well buddy and I enjoyed our time at Ft. Lewis, although it was very short. I will be going back to Normanadie again this year, my 24th time. God Bless.

    Wittman does not deserve any respect as he was an unrepentant and committed Nazi who was killed by one of my countryman S.V. Radley-Walters of the Sherbrooke Fusilier in a Sherman Firefly. Kurt Knispel, however, was a true soldier, a decent human being who commands the respect of people from both sides of the conflict. Kurt Knispel will always be admired and respected even though he was never awarded the Knight's Cross.

    • @genegarren833
      @genegarren833  Před 4 lety +10

      I know about Kurt Knispel and he does deserve respect, but so does Michael. What did Michael Wittman have to be repentant about? Also I go to Normandie for the D-Day ceremonies and have been 23 times. I am a combat veteran and 100% service connected disabled. Soldiers for the most part don't start wars, politions do. Michael was offered an instructor job my Hitler after his award of the Swords. However he choise to return to Normandie as he would not abandon his comrades. He was caught up in the war like anyone of that time. Some Waffen SS Generals like Gila were not even members of the NAZI party. I have read a lot on Michael and had I been a German soldier, I would have been proud to have served with him. Also I am very close to the British Paratroopers and Commandos and often do June 6th with them. In fact a friend of mine and myself have looked out for some of our long time British WW-2 veterans in Normandie. I knew Major John Howard and also attend the OX and Bucks Champaign toast since my first trip in 1995. I am very close with Johns family. At to Michael, he and his men were given a more or less suicide mission on 8 August and ran out of luck to a well set up ambush. I don't think they had time to conduct a recon and thus were hit on the flanks. I have the greatest respect for the British and Commonwelth WW-2 veterans whom I have known for years. Unfortunately most are gone now, as my many US and other veterans friends. I also know and have met some German WW-2 veterans also. They are all my brothers, as are all men who go into harms way. War is vial and puts fine young folk into killing each other. The time is for moving on and working together to see that all did not suffer and die in vain. Your entiteld to your view, but denagrating the heros of the vanquished is not in my view the way to lasting peace.
