Yes! I am so happy to see you react to AG! I love these young ladies! Rin (yellow shirt) is all about the street dance. They create their own choreo as well as for other groups. They have a lot of fun and it shows. Especially in the practice videos. The dance practice video for Nai Nai Nai is a funny one. They have a wide range of music too. Most of their newest stuff has been more hip hop/electronic since signing with 88Rising and hooking up with Money Mark (Beastie Boys producer). They have a series called Seishun Academy that was put together as an introduction to Japanese Culture if you want t o watch it on your own. I think there are 4 or 5 videos in the series. My personal favorite of theirs is Otona Blue Live at Thumva. It is their older style which is more of a jazzy pop rock fusion. Great reaction and I can't wait to see more AG!
Some new Japanese horror for you if haven't seen it yet. It has my favorite actress from Sakura Gakuin, Yuzumi Shintani. 13 episodes that are only two plus minutes long which is kind of aggravating but, it was released on Twitter so I guess that is why.

Atarashii Gakko (New School) were formed around 2015. The members are Suzuka, Rin, Kanon (in green) and Mizyu. They were all child performers and dancers and have all trained in kumitaisou where the performers form human pyramids. Rin is on the hip-hop side of things with Kanon and Mizyu more avant garde jazz and Suzuka (tallest one in pink here) takes on the majority of the singing...although the others also sing quite a bit too. They do all their own choreography, and do it for other groups too, and collaborate with producers on the music and lyrics. They wrote Candy with Money Mark and it's about getting addicted to sweets and how bad that is - you get a "sugar hi" followed by a "sugar low". Then half way thorough the dance they mime digestion from the mouth through the gut and then comes the "poopoo". They are very irreverent and almost an anti-idol group. They have done a few concerts in the US and this month will be part of the NHK Songs of Tokyo festival which is a big showcase for up and coming Japanese groups. Their creed is "With individuality and freedom, I'm gonna stick out" which is very un-Japanese.

Hello! Good reaction! Atarashii Gacko has been described as an Acrobatic Idol group, an Anti-Idol Idol Group and their choreography (which they create thenselves) is controlled chaos. As you can see in this video, the choreo is very interprative. They are a very original act and very fun to watch.
They are:
Suzuka (short hair, often wears glasses, pink shirt)
Rin (permed w\braid hair here. She often changes her hair-style, yellow shirt)
Kanon (long hair, green shirt)
Mizyu (Twin tails, black jacket)

AG has been performing about 8 years. They usually wear girls sailor school uniforms. The name of the group was "Atarashii Gacko No Leaders" or "Leaders of The New School" but was shortened to just Atarashii Gacko when they signed with production company 88Rising. Prior to signing with 88Rising, they promoted themselves heavily on social media and TikTok.
They proclaim themselves to be representative of the youth of Japan. Maybe the crazy youth of Japan, Lol!
Speaking of horror...They released a new song\video for Halloween called "Hanako" which is a Japanese take on the Bloody Mary\Candyman urban legends. Worth checking out.

Yes to all of this! Any of their dance practice videos are worthy. They are usually pretty fun to watch.
Their gymnastics background really shows in the choreography, they are top notch athletes and dancers. The one in green is Kanon, I’m convinced she’s boneless, she’s also quite strong.

Some of their wide stances are definitely influenced by kabuki and martial arts, but you'll also see them doing very classical pirouettes and hip-hop moves and then there's the digestive system bit which is entirely AG's own.
It certainly is a very unique side of J-pop culture. It's really beautiful that the market can afford these very special, some described "anti" figures. They provides something the main streams don't show.
There are tons of underground idol, J-pop groups in Japan. Some of them are darker, more scary ones. Some really pushed the boundaries, deep into the dark, filthy, weird side of life. Some groups have live shows that some people will walk out disturbed. But all of them are a precious piece of the whole culture.
I love finding artists when they aren’t mainstream!
It seems that they were given the opportunity by their Japanese management company to develop on their own. Then they were signed by a US label. The names of their video directors went from Japanese to American. Now I think they are guided to represent a foreign expectation of crazy and wacky Japanese performance. Like a comic book. They all have a strong dance background but are very well rounded. They do comedy skits.

They have plenty of performances with subtitles and that does help. But AG is really pretty unique. They cover a pretty wide range of musical and dance genres. Really they are just pure creativity and they have a huge sense of humor.
I've seen some clips of them before and they're actually quite monsters doing locking!!

o loved your mention of j-horror in reference to these guys!! i love what they do because there is that sense of uncanniness to their aesthetic, appearance, music, and dance that all seems to conflict a little bit and make ot feel intentional 'off'

AG stand apart from most J-pop groups because they do their own choreography. Other groups tend to slavishly reproduce the dance steps and it can all seem a bit robotic, but AG are far freer as it's their own dance to interpret and they do a lot of interpretive dance that expresses the lyrics and emotions of their songs. They've done many shows in small venues and developed great confidence to interact with a crowd. There is a video of their recent performance at The Roxy in Los Angeles and the atmosphere is great.
