- Welcome to another Don't Starve Together guide! Today I'm going to tell you why Lights Out is one of my favorite game modes to play. All of the progression is accessible and while the constant darkness adds a bit of challenge, there are quite a few unique advantages to playing in a world with no daylight. I would like to nominate WX as one of the best characters for lights out, because he can just put on a circuit and he just plays like normal except they get more nightmare fuel. Just saying lights out might be easy when you have permanent moggels. Great video! Have a great day!

In a Lights Out world, you can cheese a lot of bosses with the Twins because they will be there all night and they do a ton of damage once enraged.
Got a reed trap in my Wicker LO run and it was fun using the Twins to clear it.
The biggest problem in lights out is probably gold.
Pig King is always sleeping,which means we can't get any gold by trading with him.
Without him,farming gold is atually painful,only by mining,earthquakes or even Dragonfly.
Toys and some stuff in ruins also become useless.
If you have Wurt, you can farm lots of gold by trading ocean fish to the merm king, the only problem is that shes a dlc character but if you have her shouldn't be a problem
I imagine I’d make a massive moleworm pen, maybe on a satellite lunar island. That’s actually another LO benefit I never thought of: moleworms will always be awake for making new burrows.
If Klei made pearl stay up maybe they should also make pig king stay up
WX is also a great character to play Lights Out with. Darkness isn’t a problem, so all of the advantages you mention can be enjoyed without having to worry about portable light. It would also preserve a lot of light bulbs because you wouldn’t need to refuel any lanterns or miner hats. Also, heating and cooling circuits can be used in winter and summer respectively, which would be the only time that the darkness is of worry.
Could exchange the moggle circuit for the smaller, but cheaper light aura one. You can fit both a heater/cooler and lights that way
Thanks for the video. I almost never get to catch your streams unless I'm up at some ungodly hour, and I do watch the twitch vods from time to time but it's always nice to have a bit of extra content. Maybe I'll give lights out a go, especially with the bird changes (discovery?). The bats are a very convincing point indeed...

I just started my LO run yesterday, and Wilson is munching on blue shrooms nonstop 😂 managed to get to Spring, and frog rain is adorable, cause frogs have a sleep animation now and don't stare into the void

Here’s an extra tip: do lights out mode if you want to test out a run with new lantern or moggle skins
I don't Play Together but I'd imagine Farming for a Krampus Sack would be pretty easy. Once Summoned, They go to sleep a few seconds later. Little worry about them Stealing and Breaking your stuff. If they Behave like in the Single player game, they'll be there forever snoozing until you wake them up. You can Push them together, Drop a few gunpowders and blast them to kingdom come. Or get a few good hits in before they wake up and fight back in a one on one battle. Little reason to repeat the strat unless you just wanna farm them for the fun of it.

Actually been playing Light's Out as Wormwood and thought to myself "It's been a while since I've seen a Jazzy video, wonder what he's up to."
Was genuinely surprised to see this video on your list of releases, interested to watch it. A bonus about Light's out considering you mentioned Surf n' Turf: Wobsters are always active. They are amazing for just about everything and are by far the fastest thing to catch. The downside is having to base next to their dens but for me that's a plus. Not for everyone though.

The single hardest thing to gather are Seeds. Birds are far easier to gather considering you can get them from Catcoon vomit. Other seeds can be gathered easily via the catcoon vomit, but unknown seeds are a roughly 0.067%x3 drop rate from a tumble weed. If you want a bird cage you need 2 of them. It is absurd.
(Unlike Don't Starve solo, DST puts seeds in the same drop pool as the 1% drop rates rather than their own 2% drop rate pool making them incredibly rare. out of my 20 days of doing nothing in spring but run around the desert looking for Tumbleweeds I got 1 seed)
You can get them from the King of the Merms though so it is a hell of a lot easier with that strategy, same goes with Gold.
Speaking of Gold, the Pig King is inaccessible since he is permanently asleep so Gold runs out pretty quickly.
I personally disdain the Celestial Portal but this might be the only time I make an exception just to get access to some of the basic resources.
The Terraria crossover added a lot for Lights Out players. Not only the Eye if Terror and the Twins, but also the Suspicious Chest itself. It has a fairly high chance to spawn surrounded by Pig Torches, making the godsend of Lights Out setpeices much more common.

birds won't spawn though, right? I guess you can play wickerbottom and read the bird book after stealing eggs from pengulls, but is there any other option for other characters?
Oh damn I totally forgot that tip. Get any seed from a catcoon or tumbleweed and bait a bird trap. Then run far away to unload the trap. When you come back there will be a 50% chance for the trap to have a bird. This also works with catching canaries around a scarecrow.

I think the challenge dst offers to a player is the best kind of it. The game has multiple factors that make a playthrough hard, and even if you have experience, it can still be unforgiving. Despite this I think the game is fair for most of the time, even though the game has a lot of problems with its character design and other mechanics, its a very good example of what a sandbox survival should be like
klei is a amazing developer all the games they did are good, im not sure on what problems you mean with the characters got curious.
@@gabrielandy9272 Its hard to explain what problems does DST have with its character roster without writing a wall of text or making a 20 min video, but I will try.
Every character besides Wanda has some big problem with their gameplay or overall design (Wanda isn't perfect, but she has the best design). Basically, Klei's old design method for creating characters, was that they added random abilities into their kit that fit their story. There was no gameplay purpose behind the abilities themselves, no in-depth thinking. This is very unprofessional, but hence Klei was an indie company then, its an understandable reason for why did this happen.
The best example for this design is Walter in DST. And by that I mean, the best example for the worst character. Him having the worst design doesn't mean that he is weak, what it means is his kit is garbage. Ask yourself the following questions about Walter:
Is he meant for beginners, or experienced players, or maybe people in the middle?
What are his abilities, and how to they correspond with each other, what is the gameplay they produce?
How does he interact with the other characters?
How and why should you play him?
These are the questions you should ask yourself when you decide to make a new character. However, we can clearly see from his kit that Klei did not ask these questions when they made him.
The problem with Walter is that he is totally random. He is not good for beginners, nor experienced players, but not even for the middle. His abilities give him totally random benefits and weaknesses, that don't make a consistent character. If you look at Walter and ask yourself, what is his role, you couldn't give a clear answer, because he doesn't have one.
Look at Wanda, she is the exact opposite. She is meant for experienced team players that can fully make use of her abilities, and all of her perks connect to late game areas or more advanced crafting stations, while aslo being able to help her teammates if needed. She has a role to fill, she is meant for a part of the player base, and she is a late game character, with all of her abilities benefiting her when she gets there. These things have to be defined, and be able to work in-game, or else you will get a character who's entire purpose has to be invented by the players, and that is not good game design.
I could go in more depth with the exact reasons with Walter and the rest of the roster (especially Wormwood since I played him a lot), but this is basically the main issue. And its not just with the characters, the fight, boss and other systems have problems with them too, that Klei doesn't think about fixing anytime soon. Although these don't make the game bad, but worse than it could be.
@@tamas9554 i agree with some of this, tho im ok at the characters having they kits based on story i don't mind much the gameplay, as i see the characters more like "Twists" on gameplay that i think its balanced around wilson.
@@gabrielandy9272 The problem if Klei adds an ability just because it would make sense story wise, is that it will have an impact on the character's supposed identity in an unforseeable way.
Look at Wormwood. Plant character, so he gets insane if he kills plants, and gets sanity back when he makes new plants. This fits with his character, however, it doesn't make sense gameplay wise.
You have to compensate the player somehow if even gathering basic materials is punished, and this is not the case with Wormwood. The game punishes you for chopping trees, but it doesn't have a purpose at all, like forcing you to use some other method tied to the character.
However with this ability that is supposedly connected to plants, Wormwood basically gains the best sanity control in the entire game. He can farm fuel more easily than any other character can, and because of his livin log ability, he can get access to the magic tab the fastest too.
Look at how he is supposed to be a farmer and a plant based character, but these random perks give him completely other advantages. This is not good game design

Doing Light's out is just living in the Caves PERMANENTLY.
I started a world in lights out today bc of this video but when I remembered that the pig king won't ever wake up made me quit lol I'm too lazy to get gold mining, I need him awake T_T
In lights out Abigail always does 40 damage due to it always being night time. So I guess Wendy would be a decebt choice too.
Terraria bosses don't have time limit, but can still despawn, and reason is that night never stops. In the first "day" everything goes as usual; on the 2nd "day" EoT/ToT don't despawn because night continues without gaps, however, since EoT/ToT are in the world, terrarium can't be reactivated; on the start of 3rd "day" night continues, but 2nd "day" was also whole night without terrarium reactivation, so it goes dormant and EoT/ToT despawn.
Tallbirds are asleep at night, and since it's always night, they are either sleeping or are aggroed on something. That leaves no room for them to make new nests, be it relocation or player-raised birds. However, tallbirds seem to perform check for forming new nests once server launches, so in case personal server one can restart it to complete relocation (a few times for proper farm) - inconvenient, but doable. On dedicated servers though - that are restarted rarier that normal ones - making proper tallbird farm would be a problem if not impossible; same problem occurs in normal worlds regarding cave tallbird farms.
As for content that is locked in lights out - glossammer saddle is basically locked. Yes, one can grind tumbleweeds for butterfly wings for eternity and accumulate 34, but by that time one would be tired of the world and exhausted from grind, most likely, and first (hundreds of) days of survaval are the most relevant anyway (so glossammer saddle effectively doesn't exist). Another example is trading trinkets for gold with pig king and, as far as I remember, YotPK minigame. Also as far as I understand flowers are non-renewable and are definitely non-relocatable, which locks some places from being suitable for honey farm, as well as makes cave honey farms impossible to make (unless one makes it at Fuelweaver arena, I guess).
That being said, I enjoy playing light's out, both for more challenging first days and for at least several hundreds days after, and not the last reason for it is convenience during moonstorms: no need to be semi-insane.
I would include Wendy as one of the characters who benefits from lights out a lot: permanent nighttime damage for Abigail means more room for other elixirs aside from extra damage, which means that one can have maximum damage and healing effect on Abi at the same time (for Bee Queen fight, for clearing frog rain/spiders overpopulation (optionally with queens)), nighttime damage and speed effect (for Dragonfly fight without walls and ice staves), nighttime damage and shield effect (for Celestial Champion phase 3) and in general lights out makes boss fights for Wendy cheaper compared to normal world in terms of mouring glories (for example, normally BQ fight requires 6 of it during rush, but in lights out one can use only small healing elixir, thus consuming only 1 mouring glory). Also reduced sanity drain from darkness means that Wendy replenishes sanity lost due to enlightened crown faster, which quickly adds up if one frequently uses crown in short fights.
My LO Wicker got her 34th butterfly wing around Day 300. One of my first projects after killing all the bosses was to wall up the tumbleweed spawners, and that helped a lot with the grinding. Too bad I lost that world; was hoping for 1,000 days.

In case the other options might be too dangerous for ya, you can simply bring a chester too, just run around the camp and make sure chester pass right through or very close to the camp and they all will come out and "play" with him :)

i once attempted lights out as pre-rework maxwell and it didn't go well (mostly because the old man was barely better than wes at anything in the early game)
I did a LO run as Maxwell a couple years back with some other CZcamsrs. That passive sanity was still really nice while all my friends were fighting shadow creatures 24/7. Pre-rework puppets were also nice to use.

I am honestly wondering why no one is using the permanent full moon trick... I ONLY play with it. It has literally NO downsides, besides the occasional moonstorm in your base (which has a low chance of occuring and can be removed at will) and the fact that the shadoepieces cant be fought. But if you farmed some shadow hearts, then youre good to go and the advantages have literally no bounds
Lunacy can be a bit of an annoyance when you have to deal with it every night. But I agree, eternal full moons are lovely. The only reason I try to keep them off is because moonstorms can damage walls in my builds.

Yeah honey is farmable, just drop your bee boxes near a flower and leave the farm unloaded. It will passively generate honey offscreen.
farms are useless since they only grow during the daylight, and for wormwood that basically takes away his best tool
Wormwood would definitely benefit from a star staff. They would defo not be my first pick for a LO run.

@@frzzzzz yee, since once you're very far from the base or the place you settled it, no entities will be moving or spawning, for performance/lag reasonings. So this percentage is there to feel more realistic like if they were active :)

Should be noted that you need a bird in a cage before you can make bird book, because it needs eggs.
