    One thing we do is when we are in the reviews section of an airbnb place, we search for keywords like "bed", "quiet", "noise"... Any review with a word that we search comes up....so you can save time for whatever is important for you. Cheers.

    Another problem with AirBnB in Mexico is that often the location on the map is far off. Often it is centered just on the city. By contacting the manager and getting the exact address, you can find the correct location and find out how responsive the manager is to your needs.

    I've used Air BnB three times. The first stay was great. The second one was a complete disaster. This renter was a woman that had been violently attacked in the apartment. We showed up to find her useing watered down dish soap to wash the sheets!! She had zero cleaning supplies. The pictures were taken 4 months ago and it was trashed. Food spilt everywhere. Hadn't been cleaned or vacuumed. I spent most of my time buying cleaning supplies and cleaning up other people's hair, food and other filth. The last day I striped the bed looked underneath to find that we were sleeping on the blood soaked bed that she was attacked in! 😯 On the second day we came back to find a card from the detective. Who had stopped off to let her know that the BF how tried to stab her to death was getting out of jail!! . So glad we got out of there. The third time the owner double booked and we were left stranded. At 11:00 PM in a town that had a huge festival. The town was completely booked, except the $350 a night crap hotel. Air BnB refused to help us. So after these experiences I'm over it. Too dangerous. Michael Johnson's daughter was robbed at an Air BnB she's lucky to be alive.

      That situation is terrible! I don't blame you for wanting to be done with Airbnb. I can't believe they didn't help you remedy the situation. :/ Airbnb customer support hasn't always been the quickest in our experience, but they've at least helped us resolve any situations that arise.

    Hi, I know I'm late to the party, but I wanted to make a few more suggestions as an airbnb host to ensure you have a nice stay. First, you are permitted (and encouraged) to message the host with any questions you might have before you commit to booking. For instance, if you are allergic to dust or dander, you can ask specifically if they use hypoallergenic bedding or any kind of heavily scented products that might bother you. Or, if stairs present a challenge for you, you can ask if there are any stairs that perhaps aren't pictured. Secondly, check to see how long the host has hosted the property versus the number of reviews they have. If they've been hosting for 4 years and only have a handful of reviews, it's a good bet many of the guests simply didn't leave a review, rather than post a negative one.

    All excellent tips, and most I've used myself. One of my biggest red flags is how a host handles any kind of guest critique. If they are rude, or super confrontational...I look for other negative reviews (sometimes bad guests happen) for the host to see if it's a pattern, then I also look at the reviews that guest has left for other hosts/listings. A little detective work can usually shed light on the situation and determine who the bad actors (if any) are. A host that acknowledges the guest's critiques and either explains (in a non-confrontational way) the situation or states they will implement changes, etc., is a host I feel I can communicate with if anything arises during my stay.

    I have had many great AirBnB experiences around the world but the one time i got worked over was when i had a slight panic finding a place at the last minute and booked a shared room (not private), then learned the bathroom could be shared by 10 others! This listing was set to "strict" by owner which means you cannot get a refund for any reason, you will lose any chargeback you make with your credit card issuer too. Although the lister can refund your money they won't because it's a black mark on them by AirBnB, so i well *never* again accept any strict listings. Just something to be aware of when booking.

    Really appreciate all your videos. You guys are great. You bring so much informative, interesting content and in such a fun way. One tip you mentioned was to stay at a place for a short time, and then if it turns out to be good, to extend the booking at that time. How risky would you say that strategy is? For example, if you see what appears to be an excellent place and book several weeks in advance for two days, and then anytime from the date you booked to the end of your second day somebody else can book in the days or weeks after your two days and cause you to lose the option to continue to stay there.

    Thanks for the advice. I just learned the hard way by renting an AirBnB in Paris. The host was gracious and helpful and the photos looked good. I wasn’t told the apartment was on the 4th floor which at my age made returning in the evening a nightmare. Neither did the host tell me that just across the narrow street a 6 floor apartment was under construction raising problems with noise and dirt. There were other problems as well but the host was so nice I left a positive review. I should have told the truth.

  • @rejeanguindon5012

    I agree with Maddie that even if the hosts were really nice but the place was not to your liking that you should point it out in your comments. You can always give negative comments on a place while staying polite. It will give them a chance to address the issues and do better for future guests.

    • @stefan1669
      @stefan1669 Před 3 lety +5

      A property can be basic and not wow especially if its a budget accommodation but that doesn't mean its necessary to leave a bad review just because you are pretentious, I received a 2Star review on a listing because a guest found a dust bunny under the living room couch 10 days into her stay... 1 out of every 100 guests is an absolute nightmare just like 1 in 100 Airbnb rentals is!

    • @ksr622002

    One tip to add. I found that it is extremely important to pick the right location. I once rented a lovely apartment on a long-term basis (7-weeks), but I discovered to my horror that it was situated in a rough neighborhood. When I arrived at my destination (Medellin, Colombia), I quickly realized that I had made a mistake. I never had been to this city in my life. I now realize that I should have rented on a short-term basis in order to discover not only if the apartment was appropriate, but also if the wanted to live in this particular area.

      It's a good idea if you are a host to stay at a few other airbnbs, so you can see what others are doing. I made a list of my favourite restaurants in the area, my hairdresser, directions to the mall, how to work the TV, and so on. It was easy to update and give to my guests. I got fewer questions from guests that way, too.

In my experience a property with ratings between 5- 4.9 stars in each category and choosing the Super Host filter does help a lot to get a good experience. I had a really bad Airbnb experience in Cozumel. I stayed in an apartment for 3 weeks and it was miserable. When I left a 4-star review, the host complained. I had previously stayed in Airbnb’s throughout France, England, and the US with no problem. I live in Mexico and grew up speaking Spanish so there was no communication problem. It was just a really awful Airbnb in Cozumel. I was totally unable to get in touch with Airbnb and they did not respond to my emails through the website. I finally got a response through their Facebook site. But I came to realize that as guests, people get voted down by hosts for giving them negative reviews. Anyway, I have come to realize that in México, good hotels are sometimes as inexpensive as Airbnb. But I wish I had stopped to put together some of your tips more logically.

    You hit the nail on the head with this one! I will add that even with a Superhost you have to be careful but the trick is to be honest with your reviews and don’t just hand out 5 stars if it’s not deserved. I actually had one Airbnb user friend say to me that they were afraid to leave a less than perfect review because they thought that the host would give them a bad review and they would look like a “bad renter” as a result and therefore be declined from future rental inquiries. I hope that’s not true! In either case always be honest so that your fellow travelers can benefit from your review.

    • @feedmyeyes570
      @feedmyeyes570 Před 5 lety +1

      I'm afraid that IS true - I've stayed at loads of airBnBs but had a really bad experience at one and left a bad (but completely factual) review. After that, I had trouble booking another flat; places would look available and I would apply to stay in them, only to have the host turn me down for no reason. I'm sure that a lot prospective hosts read the reviews that you leave for other places and label you as "difficult" if you've made any complaints, no matter how justified.

    You two make Mexico seem like a fantastic place to be. I'm going to retire within the next 3 or 4 years and I'd like to follow in your footsteps. I'll continue to follow you and when the time comes, I hope that you're still around. In the meantime, I'm scheduled to take a Panama relocation tour and see how it is there. It would be great if you two started up something similar in Mexico, eventually. You're doing a good job. Keep up the good work.

    • @terryashley4674

      @@toddinthemiddle Absolutely! I spent one week in Panamá in December 2019. The bus took us cross country and we stayed at a different location every night. Everyone on the trip is now included in a network of informed people whenever we decide to relocate in Panamá. I'm still considering other countries, but Panamá is at the top of my list. I want to visit Uruguay before I commit. I also have an eye on Ecuador, Mexico and the Philippines, to name a few. 😄

    • @terryashley4674
      @terryashley4674 Před 2 lety

      @@toddinthemiddle Should I decide on Panamá, I'll probably live in or around Boquete initially. I want to learn Spanish before going into a more strictly Panamanian neighborhood where housing costs are lower. I'm not a beach person and prefer a higher elevation where it's not so hot. 🤔 As of today, I have 505 days before I plan to retire. 🤗

    • @toddinthemiddle
      @toddinthemiddle Před 2 lety

      @@terryashley4674 i looked up boquete, and it looks gorgeous.
      if i were to leave the U.S., it would to live at the beach, and preferably beachfront.
      and far as retirement goes, i was about 490 days away from my target, which would have been this last sunday.
      there was just way too much nonsense going on at work, though, so one morning i made a u-turn on the way there, and that was that.
      i love not working, and highly recommend it.
      for now, going back to work is about a last resort for me...right after suicide.
