    ATC: Yes, and better do it fast

    How many pilots practice procedures at that airport, Wittman Regional? In preparing for our first trip to Oshkosh in 2002, I practiced the approaches & landings in X-Plane at KOSH. I noticed that one of the difficult approaches was for 18 Right ... crossing over the 9-27 runway at 1,000 ft and then landing. When we got there in a 172, sure enough ... that was the runway they gave us.
    Years later in our Rutan VariEze I practiced before the trip IN RAIN in X-Plane. We had noticed on a previous trip to Oshkosh that we probably were not prepared for the rain that is almost always there during the week. So we planned on loading the airplane with rain in mind, and I practiced in X-Plane in rainy weather. That year, 2009 IIRC, we arrived over Ripon in rain. We landed, taxied to Homebuilt Camping, and set up our tent ... in the rain. Be prepared. Practice the NOTAM procedures at Wittman Regional in a simulator. You will have more fun.

    So, are they landing two planes on the same runway, landing some at the threshold on an orange marker, and other half way down on a green marker?

    • @Redbirdstol
      @Redbirdstol Před 2 lety +9

      They have two dots per runway. They land faster aircraft on the first dot, or at the threshold, and slower aircraft farther down. They can get tons of aircraft safely down like this each day.

      It’s insane to watch and even crazier when you’re flying in. Got to do that with my son 5 years ago, had to drive last year. Hope to go again. Camping by your plane is so much fun! I’m just a passenger but still love it. Experience of a lifetime.

    So, I'd hate to see one of those tents or awnings blow across the runway just as an airplane is touching down... I wonder if anybody inspects those things... dunno, maybe it's just me, but it all sounds just a bit too hectic for my comfort level. Must be real exciting for beginners.

    What percentage of that fleet was designed in the 70s or before?
    Also computerized ATC and autopilot could handle 5 times as many planes. Oshkosh would be a good test case for such a protocol.
