  • In this video titled "The Culture of Costa Rica" Allen will expose SHOCKING things you didn't know about the Costa Rican locals. Information that every tourist and those who want to live in Costa Rica should know before coming to Costa Rica.
While most people will say that Ticos (Costa Rica Locals) are the most friendly and kind people...is there an ulterior motive?
Does the culture of Costa Rica have dark secrets you should be aware of?
Why do so many houses seem to be locked up in their own prison? Tall walls, fences, and concertina wire that looks like it came from enemy lines.
While Costa Rica is beautiful and many locals are indeed nice, friendly, and non-confrontational. It's not true for all of them.

As a 5 yr old traveling to Costa Rica for the first time since and now, it's not the same. I also worked there during the tourist boom in early 90's. After a long absence, I was disappointed on a recent trip. I saw this coming decades ago as Ticos are only 2/3 of the populace today. During my absence from Costa Rica, I traveled throughout Asia at ease not worrying about crime. Sadly, Costa Rica is different today and very tough to identify a Tico on Central Ave. It was deserted at night as I stayed at Balmoral, which was tough to go outside as that hotel barricades guests at 10PM. Only exit was via car port. The facade was totally sealed. Chelles down the street is gone, so is Barcelona Bar. The famous Italian 'Botica' behind Hotel Costa Rica, I forgot what it is now. ...... El Pueblo back in the day was a great night back in the day. Cousins told me to head to Barrio Escalante, which was a fail. Maybe next time I book in Escazu while in San Jose. ......... I'm not a normal tourist, so after my first night in San Jose, I sluggishly made towards the Caribbean coast via the old route. Had to visit the Basilica and bring my mother water from the " pila," We moved on towards Turrialba with stops in Orosi and Ujarras. It was feeling all of a sudden like Costa Rica, especially when we descended upon Turrialba and overnighted at Casa Turrie. In my opinion, one of the finer accommodations in CR. I always WW the Pacuare, but next morning had a decent ride to the coast until we met hwy 32. It wasn't that bad and soon after Viscaya, we enjoyed the coastal route to Puerto Viejo. ......... I tend to ignore gringo's opinion as Costa Rica is half my heritage ..... and I have "patas" everywhere. I'm fluent in Costariquenese and that got reconstituted upon arrival. Things change unfortunately and it's not the same as remember. That said, I loved Puerto Viejo and will have a long stay in October. In the meantime, another trip in Feb.

Seeing this kind of video as someone from there myself helps me understand a bit about how other people perceive us. As I work on tourism it's very relatable and useful. Id say gringo pricing is our desesperate way to deal with gentrification, and yes there's a lot of robbery depending on where you are, and some people don't cate about the enviroment specially people from the central valley or from neighboring countries, also the cost of living for us with our salaries it's damn (if you think it's expensive for you for us it's nuts) ....and I think a problem we hace Is that ticos are adicted to credit, there's enormous lack of financial education

Hola. I really enjoy your content, thank you very much 🙏. I just have one very important question; how do i meet local Tico/Ticas in a respectful way where they don't think I'm a Multi-millionaire ?? I don't flaunt and try to blend in etc.. Traveled to 25+ countries, but it seems obnoxious here. I am in the process of moving and it's inherently frustrating.. 🙄

So good to hear your perspective...especially when you say you have traveled to 25+ countries...and this is the important question.
I wish I had an answer. After traveling all over Costa Rica in the last 9 years, driving an OLD CAR, and living amid the locals...
THEY still think I'm some multi-millionaire????
I wish they were right, but I'm just a regular guy who works every day online. LOL

Hi Allan. I’m a vet with a service connected disability, and I’m wondering if you can tell me if CR will accept that as required monthly income to qualify for residency.

While I am not 100% sure, I do feel certain that they will. As long as this is a check that comes from the gov’t and it is not a temporary thing, you will qualify as long as it meets Costa Rica minimum requirements of a $1,000 per month.
