Ooooh I watch Tom's videos all the time, I would freak out if I was walking down the Plaza de la Democracia and saw him recording. Welcome to CR. Pura vida!!
That was very interesting! I knew Costa Rica was very unique among Central American countries but I never quite understood the full picture until now.
I recently learned about its biodiversity and it blew my mind. If I remember correctly it was the second- or third-most biodiverse country on earth, handily beating out countries 10x its size, like the US, China, and Russia. That's nuts.
I read about some professors, I believe from Princeton, who took all the orange peels from an OJ factory, removed the citrus oils, and covered the earth where deforestation had occurred and in a matter of a few decades the jungle had grown back because of the nutrient-rich orange peel soil. I wish I could remember where I saw that. It was wild.
I love nerd stuff.
Great video! Beautiful country. I love it when Lucie is your videographer!
May the stars guide you always to wonderful places!
From a Costa Rican, thanks so much for telling our history! Honestly, sometimes we ourselves don't know or study it! Just wanted to do a little nitpick, actually the State model between the 50s and 80s was the benefactor State in which a lot was State owned and ran. A lot of people see this part of our history as a sort of golden age, especially regarding education and culture. It was the 80s when the "Estado empresario" came to be and things started getting privatized. Other than that, thanks so much! Love from San José!
Great content, thank you for sharing. I don't think you realize how talented you truly are.
Anyways?*....good information otherwise.
"The Banana Wars were a series of conflicts that consisted of military occupation, police action, and intervention by the United States in Central America and the Caribbean between the end of the Spanish-American War in 1898 and the inception of the Good Neighbor Policy in 1934."
Wonderful beach

Looks like a beautiful place to visit. What could be wrong with Costa Rica, no snow...🤣
A program, "In Our Time" has an interesting discussion with various professors on Goethe (Gerter).

Great as usual. Temporary dyslexia Rica, though. 😄😄
They brought Chinese and Italian workers at first to build the railroad, but the tropical diseases killed too many of them. At the end, Jamaicans and other Afro-Caribbean built the railroad because they were immune to yellow fever. You acquire immunity if you are infected as a child, when it's a much milder disease.
I Love to

Welcome to the Global South, Tom! Take care or you might get robbed, this is not NYC!
Go to Ecuador next my fellow New Yorker.

When do we get to see Lucie? She's like an enigma. For a moment I thought it was her popping up in the sand but it turned out to be Napoleon. Lol
She's in one of the earlier videos, czcams.com/video/caU2Ga6cTVY/video.html. Sick plug - 1, bab-y.
