First american who assigned Czech rep., Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Austra, Slovenia to the Central Europe. Respect :)
Ananas_CZ Austria is Central Europe
Hungary, Romania is exactly in the center of the European Continent . East Europe is Russia. They called us ''East Europe '' because Central Europe was ocupied by the Russians after WW2 .
@@bca-biciclindcuaxel7527 And Romania is a latin country like France, Italy or Spain. Thats why Romanians would be considered Central europeans.
@@geopoliticayespiritu8438 Romanians can't even read Russian (Slavonic) characters :))
@@geopoliticayespiritu8438 Sorry guys, but you are Eastern Europe. Greetings from Prague😋
The Central Europe is very underrated, so I am glad that you provided a nice video. One place you must see near Krakow is Wieliczka salt mine. It is a great place to visit especially with a family. There is not too many places in the world where one can see beautifully carved out of salt chambers, sculptures, and even a church chapel.
Prague was great at Christmas. It was awesome in person. Very different for an American. Dream come true and my room was so cheap with view of castle.
I must say that Salzburg has always been one of my favourite cities in Europe - just slightly in front of Vienna. I love the fact that it is such a quaint, picturesque little city, & the way it's old town centre is so preserved. I love sitting in one of its coffee shops enjoying coffee & cake & watching the world go by, even in winter, as the snow-flakes fall. I love that it's the birthplace of Mozart, & was the setting for "The Sound of Music". And I love the surrounding countryside. To me, out of the places I've been, it's almost the perfect place to be.
Dear Mark,
I want to add some comments to Ljubljana, which indeed is a great place, and Slovenija in general from a German tourist's point-of-view. When you drive up to Bled, you may come through Radoljica, where you can find the bee-hive-museum. This is very interesting, even for kids, because they not only show and describe everything concerning bees and honey production but they have fantasticly styled bee-hives, too. I esp. remember one shaped like a yanitchar (Turkish warrior of non-islamic-descent). From Beld you can take a bus-ride west to Bohinj from where you can ascend to the Savica-waterfalls. On the Bled island there is a beautiful old church that shows in it's museum rooms the evolution of occupation in diorama-style.
Not far from Ljubljana in the west are three sites worth visiting, Postojnska jama (a must for everyone visiting Slovenija and, as caves are cool, best on a heat-stricken day), Predjama, a castle in front of a cave, that was a partisan hideout in WW2 and of course Lipica for everyone who loves horses.
More in the east of Slovenija is Maribor with a beautiful old city and (presumably) the oldes vine-plant in the world (in the middle of the city, growing along a rather big house) and a very, very big vine-cellar. And the area around it has lots of hills and vinyards.
I love Slovenija
CU twinmama
Thank you for mentioning Ljubljana.... many people think we're in southern Europe or Balkans mainly because of Yugoslavia....Greetings from Celje, Slovenia🇸🇮
Slovenia is near to Italy and Austria, then it is a central Europe
So happy to see Gdansk on this list. Love love love Poland. Krakow and Gdansk were my absolute favorite part of my trip there. Buy some amber when you’re in Gdansk!! And take the drive if you have a car to see Malbrok castle.
Or train I did from Gdańsk with no issues
Krakow is a really lovely city! It;s highly recommend!
TopBestCities I love Krakow too. Will be heading back there soon to make some more Poland videos
Great news! I'd love to see your movies about Polish cities. I Recommend Krakow, Wroclaw,Torun, Gdansk,Lublin,Warsaw,Kazimierz Dolny. Best of Luck!
Got a bit pricy now better value is Wroclaw
Great video! Thank you for calling Poland as Central Europe. I really appreciate as we indeed are central both mentally and culturally.
Always enjoy your videos. We will be going to Poland this fall so by then we will have been to 6 of your 10 favorite Central Europe locations. Will put the other towns on our list to check out in the future.
Wroclaw, Poland is also very nice and beautiful. It is easy to get to from Germany (specifically Dresden). I have no idea how to pronounce it, but it is a very pretty, interesting place. :)
Slimy Weasles it is beautiful that is so true
Vrotzwav-that's how you pronounce it
+woltersworld do you travel in italy?
Rom_troy what for?
God, I feel so lovely, that you showed Bled. Almost nobody know this wonderful place. And nice I'd see twice Poland :) Thank you Mark
I had a great time in Slovenia and Poland. Both great places. Stayed in Warsaw and in Ljubljana and went up to lake Bled. All great places! Almost took a bus to Venice and back but decided to stay and hang in Ljubljana some more. No regrets! I was a block away from the Dragon Bridge right next to that old Bicycle factory that the anarchists live in.
I live in Zagreb, Croatia, and I haven't been around a lot, but from places there are about two or three that I liked the most.
One of them is a small city in Slovenia called Sevnica. It looks really what I picture in my head a small town would be, the city centre, oh and of course, there's a castle on the hill.
Other than that I really like Rijeka in Croatia, because it's weird in several ways. Firstly it's centre is mainly central-european (Habsburg) looking despite it being a port. Also the city is on a very steep terrain so you can see the sea from very far in land. The city is also very densely packed due to territory, for example the main city mall is also built over one of main streets in the centre so it looks kinda cool to drive through it. Also, when coming to Rijeka from the Zagreb side, you can see some buildings on top of a cliff which also look amazing. On a sidenote I'd recommend using public transportation since the roads are very narrow and most in the centre are one-way.
Other than that in Croatia I'd recomend Osijek, and maybe Karlovac. And Zagreb as well, although since I live here it's kinda meh to me. I'm not a big fan of southern coastal cities which is why don't like when people just come to the coast.
A really nice video, Mark! An essential for travellers in Europe. :)
cheers toasted cigar :)
Love your channel.
The only city I've been to on that list is Salzburg and I absolutely loved it! I have lots more traveling to do though :)
I've been to Budapest, Salzburg, Krakow and Lucerne. In Salzburg, I bought a large pretzel like the one seen at 3:51.
Switzerland is western Europe :)
I visited Poland twice. Once I was near Wroclaw and second time in Krakow. Both cities were stunning, especially churches! The one on central square in Krakow is the most beautiful church I've seen so far. Actually I like these cities a bit more than big stuff like Vienna, London or Budapest.
I would recommend to you visiting High Tatras and other mountain ranges in Slovakia. We might not have stunning architecture, but our nature more than makes up for it. That being said I love Bratislava and like other cities I visited.
Also Brno has great, but small city centre which is is really easy to get around. Plus of course beer is amazing.
BTW thank you for mentioning my home country, SLovakia. Can you talk about it a bit more, please?
you should visit serbia especially in july/august. we have a lot of festivals, the food is so tasty, the nature is beautiful. awesome churchs and monasteries, serbian people are friendly, etc
why didnt u show any pictures of krakow :D?
Love your videos; they are all very informative and entertaining. I have a big favor to ask: Please do one on Washington DC, as well.
Great video !
Thank you!
I'm Hungarian! While I don't live in Hungary, but I have friends an family in Budapest and I love it! I'm very proud of my heritage!
Thank you
Very helpful Wolter! Especially since me and my two buddies are going to study in Europe soon. So many places to go, not enough time!!!!
so many to go see and enjoy :) have fun! I know you will ;)
woltersworld thank you for making these videos Mr. Wolters, I always enjoy them! I want to study abroad in college and your videos help me to figure out where I want to go!
Andy Cockrum great to hear! and thank you for the kind words! Have a great time abroad in college!
I completely didn't expect 2 cities from Poland thank you (-:
Represent awesome poland :)
Oh my God, this place is great.
Where are the photos of Cesky Krumlov?
Try also Brno, Olomouc or Pardubice in Czech. Lovely historical towns. And a secret tip - check out Tábor! (1 hour from Prague, completely preserved renaissance old town, hometown of hussit movement)
Absolutely love your videos, Mark. Could you do a top 5 things you will hate and love about Taliinn, Estonia?
We may be in Talinn later this summer
When will you visit southeast europe or balkan
One of our favorites in Central Europe is Zagreb, Croatia... The Christmas market is INSANE!! Super cool little city with a ton of history and amazing food!
Croatia is in Balkans, not central Europe.
@@erikk.137 I would argue that Zagreb would be considered Central Europe due to it's location. If Ljubljana is considered Central Europe, than Zagreb should be too...
Which are the most cycle friendly of these 10, Mark?
In Central Europe, I have been in Germany, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary. Love from Bulgaria 😘
Finally someone recognizing Czech Republic as Central Europe! Wolter you're the best!!
Hello mark thank you for you videos much help I was thinking of travelling to Europe on me own, what do you think the best way pls
angelo kappa we havea video on 5 loves and hates of solo traveling and that will give you some tips
its funny, i went to europe for the first time last october and the first 3 cities i went to are the top 3 he said in the video. I wanted to stop by bratislava too but my friends were in a rush. Saw florence, milan, venice apart from these 3 but wish i had gone to rome instead of milan and venice.
These were the ten cities that I visited in 2016:
1. PRAGUE (I spent all of 2016 living there)
2. Vienna
3. Budapest
4. Munich
5. Krakow
6. Dresden
7. Salzburg
8. Wroclaw
9. Berlin
10. Bratislava
These were the smaller towns that I visited in 2016:
1. Cesky Krumlov
2. Olomouc
I miss list videos like this! What about belgrad by the way?:)
ahahhahaha Belgrade should not even be in the top 20 and not in the top 10 do not be funny
Hi Mark, with respect, I would argue that Lucerne, Switzerland is considered as Western Europe, not Central Europe.
Aside from this observation, very good video. I have been fortunate enough to work and live in Europe in the late 1980’s to early 1990’s and travel many European destinations. More recently, my wife and I travelled “Central Europe” in 2016 and visited many places you described in your video. I would agree on your feedback on these locations. This August (2022) we are travelling France for a five week driving holiday…..our “Grand Tour de France”. Thank you for so many informative videos on Europe.
..that could not be...!!! i miss my hometown GRAZ !!
I truly recommend Gdańsk in Poland ( easy to get there from Berlin) :)
I completely agree. Gdansk is amazing
There's a mistake in the description box, Bratislava is in Slowakia as you said in the video correctly, nice video though :)
Have you ever been in Vorarlberg Mark? :)
*Slovakia
Maybe I've missed it - a video about places but not cities. Like the traditional Dunajec raft ride etc.
While visiting Europe any
Problem(not financial) will u help ?
Because of Language
R u European?
What mode of travel do u use to travel to all of those cities?
I usually do a train between each as they are not too far apart.
Have you ever wandered along the canals in Amsterdam after a coffeeshop trip, high as a kite on Amnesia Haze?
bohemianwriter1 not personally ;)
woltersworld That's an experience every hippie from USA would cherish :-)
Many of the cities you are talking about, I have been to.
Had a romantic encounter in Budapest. Went to Auschwitz before going to have the worst pizza I have ever eaten in Krakow. Been drinking vodka en masse in the square in the old town before taking the train to Prague. Had to spend one day travelling from Berlin to Lodz to change the staggering amount of Zlotys (which they didn't change either in Germany or Czech Republic.
Your travel shows certainly brings back memories mate...
Loved Ljubljana and Cesky Krumluv!
Like Bern even better than Lucerne. Not at all touristy
Where is
Karlovy Vary in the list?
Berlin,Warsaw,Zurich???
your description has a mistake. you have put 9th lucerne to 10th, 10th gdanks to 9th. by the way what do you think about warsaw? i am on the verge of going there but it seems a much less of a european city with not alot of architecture. is poland in general rather colder and boring than the other central european countries?
opp799 Poland is really interesting
Poland is an amazing country. I love the people. I've only been to Kraków but I discovered Poland to be a hidden gem.
Poland does not belong to the center european countries.
Warsaw was once completely destroyed, which may have less interesting buildings, but I like Warsaw and modern buildings
Vienna, Salzburg, Prague, and Budapest. Everything else was small, poor, or destroyed at some point in the last 500 years.
John paul the 2nd isn,t from Krakow but Wadowice
Germany is also Central Europe, actually also the Netherlands, Northern Italy, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, depending on the size of what one want consider 'central europe' even France etc. (central europe time includes for instance even all of them and much more countries). one should focus on the reality now: culture, architecture, flora and fauna etc... and with culture i mean the real culture: Prague speaks mostly a dominant local language (among many others) and English. Same goes for Berlin, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Vienna. All love beer. All love similar kind of clubs. All have similar outdoor activities. All have a quite similar life within a quite similar setting, hear quite similar music and so on ...
Gdańsk 2021 is a completely different city than 10 years ago. Fastest developing city in Poland beside Warsaw. Regards.
People call us eastern Europe mistakingly not because we are on east, but because once in a history we were a part of eastern communism block together with USSR. But it doesn't mean that we are East. A part of "eastern block" was Cuba too. And nobody calls Cuba an eastern country.
So please allways take into account the real geography. :)
Can you please pretty please make a video about travelling in the U.S. for us europeans?
what would you like me to cover? I will be traveling in the US a bit and could put one together to help. I just need topics
woltersworld Different characteristics of different parts of the country. Where to travel, based on what you're interested in. How to travel and what to focus on. Typical mistakes and how to avoid them (like the ones you did for americans on "don't make your trip to expensive, don't just choose the expensive cities"). I'm curious about the outdoors too, my country has the freedom to roam and I love to hike and camp. And I'm always curious about drag queens...
neonvalkyrie I will do my best to put something together for you
Wolter !!!!! 6:10 WOOOOW that's you??
Handsome indeed there!
Where's Warsaw? I love Krakow, but why isn't Warsaw here?
Warsaw isn't good place for tourists, there's not really much to see here.
hello. have you been to Dubai??? if so can you tell how much money you will need for a week vacation??
+Emily Clarkson I have never been. Sorry :(
Ok...well Thank you for responding.
+Emily Clarkson I've been to one week... it really depends on when you go... the prices in winter are about 100% higher than in summer. I was there in June and the temperature was around 35 degrees every day and very humid but it's ok because you spend most of the time inside. I was in Atlantis The Palm hotel which is absolutely wonderful but it's 30km outside of the city centre (taxis are cheap). The final price really depends on where you fly from and whether you take an expensive hotel or an airbnb.
If you go there, don't stay in Dubai, but instead go to Sharjah, it's different city and Emirate, but it's right next to Dubai, it's like Jersey and NYC (just without the river), so you safe a lot by staying in hotel there, but if you want to visit malls or other stuff in Dubai just take a cab and from some beach resorts in Sharjah its actually closer to Dubai Mall than from famous Palm Island.
Thank you Cesario and Pavel 49.
Come visit Slovenia! If you need anymore info hit me up :)
Hoping to get back to Slovenia in 2016 for a good time travel :)
Great!! Looking forward for and awsome video! :). Like I said if you need any info and help from us locals just contact me :)!
Tomaž Rebič Will do! had a great time when I was there a few years ago. The wife really wants to go there as well... so two driving forces :)
And I am sure that you are going to have a great time again! Slovenia is a great and family friendly country too if you ask me. And you will have no problem speaking english with us. :)
Zagreb (Croatia) should definitely have been in top 10
i miss zurich..
Being from Switzerland, it's weird to hear it be referred to as a central european country. Maybe geographically you could make the argument but stil...
why don't you make videos about poland russia serbia or bulgaria
You may want to change the wee error in the description: Bratislava is in Slovakia not Austria haha!!!
Did I put Austria down? I am an idiot
My God, people going crazy about their country being in “Central Europe” and not “Eastern Europe”. They’re labeled Eastern Europe because they were part of the Eastern Block led by Russia after WW2. This just stuck and you can’t undo it. Cmon guys don’t get so upset..
because people who follow this old division of East and West do not follow logic and Central Europe makes sense and does not go to extremes, these countries are Central European, but people learned in this way are hard to change their thinking
SLOVENIJA ❤️🇸🇮👍
As for the guy named Stephen I or Saint Stephen, he did not only make Hungary Christian. He made Hungary. Literally. He was the very first king of Hungary, crowned in 1000 AD.

No.
Nice video but so different cultures. I think it's not adequate to consider these countries in one basket. As you start to go to east, you can feel soviet identity so strongly. But in countres like austria, it's completely different. Iron curtain existed once and you can still feel its effects on culture, architecture and religion.
I would also recommend you Zakopane in Poland :)

Can you tour parliament in Budapest?
Daniel Cronin I do not know for sure but I would imagine you can arrange one
You can, but you'll need some luck as they're often full. Also, the tickets are a tad pricy at around 19 EUR or $22.50 for adults visiting from non-EU countries.
Here you can find some more detail: latogatokozpont.parlament.hu/en/introduction
Central Europe is the real spirit of Europe. 🇵🇱🇸🇰🇨🇿🇭🇺🇸🇮🇩🇪🇦🇹🇨🇭🇱🇮
Yes! The guardians of Europe.
You need to redo your top 10 Eastern European cities then because almost all overlap with your Central Europe cities
I've been living in Kolín, CZ for almost thirteen years now, my adopted home, but trying to convince Americans the Czech Republic isn't Eastern Europe is like trying to convince Americans that Coors Light isn't good beer.
for me the czech republic is closer to the west than the east of europe but it is central
I guess geographical borders can be assigned to sometimes different" locations"-- as in directions, in this case, giving them a more social-economic, and often-times political implication, but to my mind, and that of many other people, Hungary truely is in Eastern Europe. Switzerland is also in the west, and this is because Austria has arguably been considered as the transition country, dividing the west and the east, over the centuries. Only Poland, Slovakia, Austria, Cz rep and sort of Slovenia are Central. But Slovenia is considered more of a southern country though.
Hungary is central
eastern europe countries: Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Romania.
+Lukasz Szkutak Nope. Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia are not Eastern European. They are the Baltic states. BIG difference. Be careful with your statement. Cheers
1=Budapest!! Queen of danube!!
They (except Switzerland) are technically in Eastern Europe 😂
I would chose Vienna as the first place and Prague as the second!
Prague is very pretty but compares to imperial capital Vienna,Prague looks like a provincial town!
+DC H Disagree here. Yes, Vienna is a beautiful city and yes, it is imperial and yes, it is larger than Prague (still), but PRG is simply prettier. Looks like a fairytale city. It depends on someone's preference, of course, but the fact it attracts more tourists than Vienna and is the 4th most visited city in Europe after London, Paris and Rome, proves it.
no it simply proves that more Tourists choose to come to Prague.
Even more people choose to come to Macao. Is Macao simply prettier than Prague now?
Of course not.
Oh and by the way you are wrong:
www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/galleries/the-worlds-most-visited-cities-where-does-london-rank/vienna/
Anyways both are incredible cities and each has its qualities. And sometimes all these neoclassical 'whipped-cream-facades' of Vienna are a bit much. ;)
I personally found Vienna a bit boring and kinda colourless, Prague is opposite, but it is less imperial and wealthy, so i would say there is no absolute winner since its all about personal preferences, not statistics:)
Martin Svoboda there are more people visiting only st stephens cathedral than visiting prague
Mark I know you love to say how the people in most places are great but from my own experience they're is a sizable amount of people in Bratislava who are very hostile. I was visiting my friend who is a local and faced a lot of uncomfortable and hostile situations with the locals. From men wanting to fight the tourists to local taxi driver sexually harassing women.
Oh, wow, that sounds scary! I was only in Bratislave for 1.5 days, but I was traveling alone and had no problems. In fact, this one woman stopped me on my way up to the castle, and started telling me all about the cool things in the area and this history of the city, and I thought she was trying to distract me so I could be robbed or something, but no, she was just very excited about sharing her city with me. It was weird; I've never had that happen before!
James Y, I was just in Bratislava and experienced zero issues from locals and despite all the warnings, I actually used a taxi for one short trip. Yes I was overcharged a bit but I expected it. Out very late in to the evening solo 2 nights and with a small group once and never encountered anything negative but then again, we stayed in the popular areas. I was shorted €1 at the train station but with all the help she gave me, I suppose she deserved it.
Yeah, I was in the histoical part of the city, so maybe it's other parts where people have problems?
In Sweden we also say that countries like Czech Republic, Poland, Slovenia and Hungary belongs to Eastern Europe.
But maybe we're wrong :)
it is a regional thing for sure, but I have received lots of complaints that I put some of those countries in my eastern Europe videos... so just trying to give equal opportunities per region :)
woltersworld It's probably the mentality of the Cold War that has not disappeared completely yet for us here in Sweden. That's why we see countries like Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary as Eastern Europe still. But the times are changing, and the mentality will change too :)
Michal: I say that Sweden is a bit closer to Germany ;)
ChrisLind81 same as in the US, with the mentality thing. Iron curtain means eastern Europe to us. Even if it has been 25 years. all the best to you on your travels Chris!
woltersworld What countries WOULD be considered Eastern Europe?
Slimy Weasles it honestly depends on what kind of trip you want to do and who you are talking to. And as I know where discussions on what is eastern Europe, central Europe, western Europe get to be a bit testy I will stay out of this debate :)
Central European countries 🇦🇹 🇭🇷 🇨🇿 🇩🇪 🇭🇺 🇮🇹 🇱🇮 🇵🇱 🇷🇴 🇸🇰 🇸🇮 🇨🇭
While it is hard to argue about the importance and popularity of these cities, the problem with them, or at least the first four, that they are well known and therefore touristy and pricy, specially in season. So I would just replace them with the second or third cities of the same country. Instead of Prague, visit and stay in Brün. Or instead of Budapest, see Debrecen, or Miskolc.
but you really should see Prague regardless of "touristiness" of it. it really is amazing
Tschüß bro I live in Vienna Best place all people live good live not different rich or boor
Don't forget continental Croatia:)
Croatia is in Balkan not central Europe.
@@erikk.137 Wrong. Croatia is a part of Mediterranean, Central Europe and the Balkans. Rivers Sava and Kupa are the borders between CE and the so called Balkans. Those are also cultural and religious borders between Catholicism and Orthodoxy. And you know Poland is a catholic country too..and Istria is almost an Italian province - it is very wrong to put it in so called Balkans.
@@peter871 True, for part of Croatia in the nort could be said it is in Central Europe, but the vast majority is in the Balkans and from that point of view Croatia is Balkan country, with which is nothing wrong. I have to say, there are kind and hospitable people, great food, beautiful nature...

Slovakia and Hungary are central european.
