TYSM CLAIRE! I’m a 74 yo “newbie” to painting (began wc abt 4.5 yrs ago) who bought a lg set of the neo color II Pencils and didn’t use them. I don’t especially love the look with a lot of strokes on it which is what I have seen presented with wc pencils. I really love what you did with these crayons! Seems to me that perhaps the crayons “melt” easier than the pencils but I can see a use for the pencils in refining some paintings. I need to learn so much! Great video! Don’t care what “ those other “ teachers are doing, I love your methods and teaching style! I realize this video is almost as old as I am… but works of art are timeless…right!? Thank you! again!💕

You are absolutely brilliant! Your presentation is so easy to follow and your comments are spot on. I love how as one paints the neocolor II, the griffin stands out from the background. Thank you so much for this great tutorial.

I love Neo II's. I use them on whole pictures. If it's too fiddly to get the crayon in, I just use the brush.
Tip: use the back end of the crayon for getting colour onto a wet brush. Keep the pointed end dry to direct application. If you have a paint pallet, scribble some onto that and you can mix the colours with a wet brush and create your paint that way.

Thank you so much for the video. My 84 set of Neocolor ii arrived yesterday and will be trying them out very soon probably with colour swatches to start with. I love anything to do with space so I can see me doing sky's that yours all over my colouring books. It's a big are to cover but this technique looks easier than what I have been doing in the past with ordinary pencil crayons.

Amazing, this is the best application I have seen using the Neos straight onto the paper. I usually use a water brush on the tip of the crayon and apply it that way, then I don't get any residue, which I hate. Will definitely try this I'm guessing it's all to do with the tapping of the brush as opposed to stroking the brush across the paper. I am not surprised everyone has gone 'ape' wanting to see how you do this. An excellent tutorial as ever. Tfs xo

    • @scruffy281

I hadn't seen this application of Neo II's straight onto paper like that either. It seemed so heavy handed. At first I was like ouch!!! I am still a bit afraid to use so much water though but I am definitely going to give this application a go.

May I ask have you ever used those new paint brush pens with the water in them, if so what are your thoughts on them, I have 1 & I still can't get used to it, I honestly think a real brush is so much better.

If you use the toothbrush spatter technique, try making a frisket. Materials: 1) swivel knife (best) or X-acto knife; 2) tracing paper or vellum; 3) rubber cement or repositional stencil spray . 1) Apply a thin layer of rubber cement or repositional spray to your tracing paper; 2) lay down quickly being careful not to get air bubbles; 3) use swivel knife X-acto knife to cut your tracing paper to the shape of your design. 4) peel off excess paper 5) use a pick-up or a bit of dried rubber cement to pick up excel rubber cement from the area where you will be spattering. 6) Spatter away. If this seems complicated, and you will not be covering a large area, post-it notes that have the adhesive over the entire note work well, as do liquid frisket and real, store bought frisket which can be purchased in art stores. The best thing to do is to experiment before using on something that is precious. Warnings: 1) use rubber cement and spray adhesive should be used only by adults in a well-ventilated area as they contain serious chemicals; 2) when using rubber cement or spray adhesive, make sure to have the adhesive on only one side. If you are putting it on the tracing paper, make sure there is none on your work. If the adhesive is on both your work and the tracing paper, the bond will be permanent. Another alternative I thought of but haven't tried is to roughly cut tracing paper to the basic shape of the area you want to protect, leaving a 1/4" border. Tape the tracing paper on with drafting tape. Do not apply lots of pressure on the drafting tape, because drafting tape can sometimes stick too much and tear your paper. Use your swivel knife to cut around the drafting tape to the outline of the area you are protecting. Spatter. Make sure your work is completely dry before carefully lifting the drafting tape. Experiment before you try this. The safest, most stink-free method is to get real, expensive frisket or to use completely sticky backed post-it notes. These post-it notes have adhesive over the entire back, not just a 1/2" strip.
