I think the winner was right. Heathers was appropriate for the time, yeah I may have been a little dark for some sensitive viewers, but back then in the 80s that’s what the general norm was in terms of cinema, even teen flicks. And yeah the storyline was dark as well, but to get a point across I feel that darkness and a shocking gratuitous murder plot was Exactly what the audience needed for them to be jolted and shopped into understanding the overall message.
There was one category, as superficial as it may come across, that I’m surprised wasn’t touched on in this list. The wardrobe. Both of these movies at attention to the warship and the cost to me, especially one implementing it as plot armor so to say. One had a timeless costume, Heathers with the plaid preppy school girl getup, but One was able to implement itself into the social zeitgeist “on Wednesday’s we wear Pink”
Without Heathers, there wouldn’t be a Mean Girls. Also Heathers produced some iconic lines AND a kick ass musical

The Heathers musical isn't lighter than the movie. It's more concise in plot and character development and the songs are just as dark. Heathers deserves to be on Broadway already!

I`d claim the musical actually was lighter, veronica still shows emotions towards JD at the end in the musical, and JD isn`t as abuse as he is in the movie. He literally banged her head and forced her to make out with him, twice. In the musical it seems more like JD went off the rails due to his love for veronica, wanting to get rid of everything that hurt her. He also apparently sacrifices himself in order to bring out the bomb to the field because they couldn`t stop the clock, so veronica didn`t have to. So he appears to be a lot more sympathetic character. in the movie, he actually stopped the clock, then started it again to blow himself up. JD was the only actual suicide in the movie. I love both works equally as much doe, and they`re both really dark. But the movie was darker, with veronica purposely hurting herself by burning her wrist with a cigarette after they killed the jocks bc of guilt and etc etc.

Heathers is my absolute favorite movie. The teen flick is anything but cliché and is packed with a lot of symbolism, good character development, exceptional and VERY QUOTABLE dialogue, and a perfect cast!
@That One the thing is it's not tho, I've seen both movies many times and appreciate them both but Heathers is much better from a film perspective and in my personal subjective opinion as well. The Mean Girls end was very predictable and the only cool distinct symbol I can remember from the film is when Cady begins to wear a necklace with her initial just like Regina. Whereas Heathers plays with everything, from the repetitive use of color (Heather C. being red, Veronica blue, Heather D green and Heather M yellow) in the lighting of the scene in which Veronica and Heather C have a fight at the party (red and blue light) and the decoration of a cup in the scene in which JD pics out a mug for the "hangover cure" the cup in the shelf having four stripes of the four colors each girl represents. It also goes in depth with the character of JD exploring his home life, his relationship with his psycho dad, and his ideology of "The only place Heathers and Marthas can truly get along is in Heaven". And I could go on and on for days explaining the importance of the use of cigarettes and the phrase "our love is god" but I think I've done a lot. Lmao sorry for the rant I'm just hella passionate about heathers but mean girls is a really good movie too and really defined the genre of chick flicks.

Mean Girls epitomized the second coming of teen comedies. This is actually the 21st century version of Heathers, minus the killings and double the revenge!
Heathers was the obvious choice. It was ahead of it’s time and iconic. Mean girls is just basic and predictable.
One of my favorite things about the Mean Girl musical, is when in the opening song, Janis sings about how it is "based in events where people died" before Damian saying "no one died". If it's not they being self-aware of Heathers influence, I don't know what it is
Heathers will always be the BEST. The movie in my opinion made Winona Rider. The musical is FANTASTIC. And while both seem similar in some ways Heathers is FAR more dark and the humor gets horrible but I think Heathers has a WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY more iconic line then some of the iconic lines from Mean Girls

I think over all, heathers is way more iconic. It is the iconic 90s film, but it stands out a lot. It’s the perfect mix of dark topics and humor.

I love both equally. One is a light hearted comedy where as the other is a dark plotted movie. Though you can definitely see similarities they both give off opposite vibes that make them unique! For me, it really depends on my mood that decides which I would prefer to watch.

I agree. Though I do think they are really different as to be compared
Both are classics for similar reasons, but it’s their differences that help each stand up. Personally I do prefer ‘Heathers’ for its sardonic biting commentary that still holds relevance today. ‘Mean Girls’ though does provide a 💡at the end of the tunnel in its narrative and does have excellent dialogue (thank you Tina Fey)

Strangely enough for those of us who saw Heathers when it came out and then saw Mean Girls, we immediately think that it's a less dark Heathers. For those who saw Mean Girls first and then saw Heathers, like my daughter, she doesn't think the two movies are remotely similar and doesn't know why anybody compares them. Heathers is a way more ambitious movie and it redefined teen films, but, I think, on the whole Mean Girls is a better more consistent film. I also think the acting in Mean Girls among the four leads is scary good. Almost every scene has a special moment.

I don't think there's a so direct comparasion. Yes, they are very similar characters both in their role in the movie in inside of school
But Heather Chandler is more bold, daring. She's openly mean cause she know she can. She has greater authority in her presence alone.
Regina George, in other hand, is more subtle. People only fear her cause they know what she's capable of. She's more intelligent and better in long-run strategy. She uses people to get information, she's emotionally manipulative (Chandler may be emotionally abusive, but she lacks the subtly of proper manipulation), she turn people against each other. Even after Cady and Janis plan of revenge, she almost turned the table. She only lost her power for good cause the teacher was able to grab her victim in the same space and admit out loud what she truly is for the first time, and then Janis gave the last blow with her speech.
They're different. I like to compare them think in Heather Chandler as a tyrant queen, while Regina George (despite her name meaning "queen) is a dictator.
Chandler seems to take power more naturally. Simply because. She's the queen and that's it. Her very presence is enough. While Regina George got her power through strategy and manipulations of the popular opinion.
Their crowns are a good symbol of that. The crown that symbolises power in Heather in a personal object of Heather Chandler. It literally belongs to her. Duke was only able to take it after her death. The crown that represents power in Mean Girls is the Spring Fling Queen crown. It doesn't belongs to Regina, but she knew how to make people believe it did. This crown only belongs to Regina because people would give her that. It wasn't naturally hers, but she knew how to get that.

Highly disagree. Heather Chandler was a horrible leader who got herself killed. Regina George actually knew how to run a group and make those following her actually love her. Even Cady wanted her approval, and she hated her.

I *adore* Heathers and JD is one of my all-time favourite characters, but I feel like the comedy point should've gone to Mean Girls. Heathers got me snickering, but Mean Girls had me laughing days after, just thinking about it. Heathers is good because it's emotional, not because it's particularly very funny imo.

Imo Heather's is better as a musical. The songs just make it 10000x better than it already was. Mean Girls Musical is pretty good too, but I prefer the movie of that. Tbh I just prefer musicals to movies.

Before anyone come being like "MeAn GiRls Is BaSeD oN hEaThErS" NO. Mean Girls is based on a self help books called "Queen Bees and Wannabes" which is based on a real life situation. Even some characters are based on REAL PEOPLE so no, mean girls isn't based on heathers.

I love Mean Girls, but Heathers is just the best, arguably one of the greatest teen flicks of all time.
Heathers is just much more intelligently written. EVERYTHING about the way its written and filmed is genius. It operates on multiple levels and is meta while mean girls is just entertaining.
If it were released today , i like to think it would be a huge hit.but perhaps it would go exactly the same way whereby it black nature and subtleness of layers would not be initially fully appreciated.
There is just no comparison with the dialogue, either. Can't think of one line from "Mean Girls" that approaches the level of "Dear diary: My teen angst bullshit has a body count"

Winona's performance was so good in it that you can't help but watch her today, 30+ yrs later, in stuff like stranger things and still see + hear echoes of her Heather's performance in almost everything she does.
You should do Heathers vs Cruel Intentions next though. Both are toward the darker side of the teen flicks..

I remember when I had my boyfriend watch Heathers for the first time he thought it would be just another cliche teen movie but was shocked and proven wrong.
