My introduction to Judas Priest was British Steel, when I heard Living After Midnight I bought the album, I wasn't familiar with their earlier work, and when Point of Entry came out I was not disappointed, I loved it, I thought it went well with British Steel. I know the diehard fans have a problem with that album, but that was during a great period in my life, partying to Heading Out to the Highway, Solar Angels, Hot Rockin, yeah I'll always think fondly of that album...

Agreed, too many classic gems on PoE to dislike that album. The heavy songs on BS may in nature have been heavier than anything present on PoE, but BS also had its fair share of softer melodic tracks (chiefly its three singles).

This ended up being a great look throughout Judas Priest's discography without relying on the obvious 'classic' album choices. I have to say, as cliche (and obvious) as it could be, this format would be amazing for Deep Purple's output. I've been listening to a lot of the Morse era lately, which I mostly quite love, and I certainly think we'd all be entertained by this trio's discussion of the band in general.

Defenders of the Faith was always my favorite. Sin after Sin probably comes in second. Honestly, it wouldn't be fair for me to pick a least fav, because I haven't followed much of the band's material past the early '90s; I'll rectify that one of these days.

Defenders of the Faith is an excellent album, start to finish. Not a weak track in the lot. It was less commercial than Screaming, and a whole lot more cohesive. The Sentinel is a highlight.

    • @TheTVisions
      @TheTVisions Pƙed 2 lety +5

To be totally honest and fair, I find DotF overall a lot more commercial than SfV, which was already quite commercial in itself. Compared to say Stained Class, their '80s output was all extremely commercial. We tend to gloss over sometimes, that metal can be that but Priest by this point had long been a commercial sounding metal band, way more than say Maiden or Motorhead (who wasn't even a metal band to begin with). "The Sentinel" along with "Freewheel Burning" are (like "Screaming for Vengeance") all top notch classic metal songs, most everything else though (along with a rather dire production) really is bordering on 'poppy' in actuality. I think they're basically (dare I say) melodic pop songs given a heavied up sound, i.e. they were definitely trying to get on the radio and MTV still with this album. There's nothing wrong with that of course it's how the times were, only stating a few musical structural statistics.

JP is one of those bands (like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin) where my favorite album and their "best" album (IMO) are different.
My favorite Priest album in "Screaming for Vengeance". Right album at the right time for me (just outta high school) and it's the album that finally pushed me firmly into the JP camp. However, I think their "best" album....intangibles aside.....is "Stained Class". Simply a sonic metal masterpiece.
There isn't really a JP album that I dislike. Maybe "Nostradamus" doesn't really light me up, but other than that I have no complaints (I'm not counting the 2 Ripper albums in this exercise).

Hey great show guys, always ready for some Judas Priest discussion. I like the two favs/non-favs aspect as well as the wildcard. Mine would be Stained Class and Hell Bent for the favorites; Demolition and Nostradamus for the dislikes. The wildcard is tough, but Defenders or Redeemer would fit this spot well. I think an Iron Maiden show would be great and I hope we get other bands like this too. Cheers!

can’t agree! Now, Pete’s two top picks, same as mine. Love Sad Wings and Stained!!! The band at their best!!! And Rob is “THE METAL GOD!”

Favourites: Painkiller (top 5 album of all time, absolutely perfect start to finish) & Firepower (amazing album late in the game, looking forward to the next one).
Least favourites: Rocka Rolla & Nostradamus (not terrible, just don't revisit them very often).
Wild card: Demolition - this is a peaks and valleys album for me, there are moments I really like and parts that are not very good. I agree with you Pete that the slow moody tracks aren't great (Close to You, In Between and Cyberface are all filler tracks), but I love Machine Man, One on One, Bloodsuckers, Feed on Me and Metal Messiah.
Please do the Iron Maiden show in a couple of weeks, that would be a two thumbs up from me 👍👍.

Late to the party again! Listened at work last night so my tipple had to be black coffee from a thermos! Another great show gents, roll on Maiden and more! My top 2 would be Stained Class and Painkiller, with Demolition and Ram It Down as my least favourites, and then Sin After Sin as my underrated wild card...
The 1st Priest album I owned was Point of Entry, but weirdly my earliest memory of the band was actually from a school English exam, either my official O Grade or Higher, can't remember which, where a comprehension passage was actually the text of an advert for I think, Bose in-car speakers, where the writer gets buried in a snowdrift in his cat and attracts the rescue services by playing Priest at full volume. I can even now, nearly 40 years on, remember the line that says 'I marvelled at the pitch of the lead singer's howl'... I got an A, by the way: inspired by Rob!!!

I've never understood the hate that Turbo got!! How was it any lighter, than anything else Priest had done? As a 12 year old in 86, Turbo Lover and tracks from Maiden's Somewhere In Time, had this futuristic sound to them, that was really neat!!

Another great show. 1st got into Priest with Killing Machine & British Steel & they remain my favourite albums. Others I love are Point of Entry, Screaming for Vengeance, Painkiller & Firepower. Least favourite are the 2 Ripper Owen albums. I’m really confused by Turbo. I don’t dislike it but I struggle with it as I don’t think the songs (which I don’t mind) suit Halford’s voice and it sounds to me like he’s struggling.
