Modern front wheel drive hot hatches don't half put their power down well. 30-70 in 3.88 seconds is Lotus Carlton territory to someone of my maturing years..😅😅. This Cupra is one SERIOUS performance car.
Great review, I could have had the golf but the cupra is so much more fun I pulled the trigger on the cupra and haven’t regretted it for a second. Cheers 👌
Is it expensive to run? How often do you change the tyres and how much petrol do you put in a month?
My Cupra does about 45 on a run and you do have to go some to get the average to dip below 35. Tyres use mid point summers and nexen winters and this combo means milage is very good
@@jonnyvt6602 You must be driving it conservative lol, when i had mine i was averaging 20
@@antop4597I’m averaging 20 too can’t get more than 30 on a run so idk how he’s doing that😅
@@AI-Records24 at a push on a long trip I did manage to get 50mpg, but that was in full eco mode lane 1 doing about 55-60 on a 4 hour trip, and I bet that was helped due to a lot of the trip being mostly down hill
Love my Cupra SC 280, had it from new and done 90k with no issues, other than the obligatory water pump. It's such fun to drive and it also does the boring stuff well too.
Good video. One of the only recent comparisons between the 2
Really good review, talking about things I've not seen other reviewers talk about. Things a buyer of one of these cars will notice, like how is it with the start-stop on, which reviewers seem to hate or ignore, so they don't even talk about it. The steering rack being faster than a regular golf, also something that doesn't seem to be mentioned. And seeing how the adaptive cruise control actually works, I use it all the time one of the best features in modern cars. Good work!
Very good video with a honest review and he knows his stuff 👍
Could have had either but chose the Cupra as its less common and has more character than the Golf R.
Love my R and the Akrapovic sounds great even with a GPF
Test drove a Golf R start of the year, ended up with a Cupra, couldn’t be more happy with it
I owned the 7.5 Golf R recently, and the cup holders crush cans of Pepsi Max, to the point where you spill freshly opened cans everywhere trying to get them back into the holders. It's also very diesel sounding in Normal mode under 3000rpm, and that's with E5 fuel and FSH. Even with MPS4 tyres all round, it doesn't corner as well as my old 2016 Jaguar XE R-Sport 2.0D AWD did. It's a very electronic feeling car. Catch it be surprise, in a low gear pulling away and you'll be left embarrassed (DSG). It's in Race mode that the car makes a lot of sense. But only when you're throwing it about. Drive in Race mode in any built up traffic at 30-40mph, and it holds onto 3rd gear and drowns your ears out. Makes people around you think you don't know how to change gear. I'd put the Golf R on a pretty high pedestal but after owning it, I don't know, I wouldn't say it was an especially special car to drive. I've had more fun in the Jag and my old E90 320D for sure. It just goes really quick in a straight line well. It's a traffic light beater car, unless the other person is in a Tesla M3 or RS model Audi.
I have the Pre face lift 290 dsg black edition with the bucket seats and sub8 alloys the interior is abit dated But the exhaust is so loud with a res delete makes up for the interior
exactly why i bought a cupra 290 and now on my third cupra st 280
Golf is so boring and overrated.I’d pick the Cupra all day long and use the money saved to run it
Very smart
Correct. The reason I wont get a Golf R is it has a bad image these days, usually driven by criminal types and they get stolen a lot.
@@oddities-whatnotI’ve had three, am not a criminal, and enjoy the wet performance. And BTW when you compare residuals, R is cheaper to own long term.
Ended my debate of looking for a new car thank you!
What did you go for?
@@anthonymeek4248 cupra 290 lux
Been looking at the cupra 290/300 for a while and reached out with the form about sourcing one with yourselves, but never get anything back? Regardless love the vids, give a good insight to what other reviews don't really touch on
it’s because the cupra is my personal car so sorry about that. We don’t really buy anything SEAT related unfortunately. Anyway, glad you enjoyed it!
interesting! Guess it all boils down to are you going to want to have blast for sake of it or do you want just all rounder.
And how often it rains….
is that your car, the cupra? I remember you mentioning once what you drive, not sure if it was this one or an ST :-) Anyway, you were talking about a little less insulation in the cupra for the better price, could that make the sound system sound better since it is less stuffed in the doors for example, so the air has more room to 'sound out'?
Yes this cupra is my car, if anything it means i’ve had time to find more faults with it haha. In terms of sound system i’m just not sure, it’s less loud but definitely more clear.
Less noise insulation makes the sound worse and not better. I got the Seat Sound system and im really impressed for the price!
Tbh I can’t think of a better all round car for under £20k than the Cupra. Especially when you factor in insurance cost for young drivers
cupra looks like a better sporty car then golf while the golf is better build inside and confy then the cupra and more price
the cupra is very comfy, interior is very nice also. I prefer cupra interior to a R or GTI
@@cupra2Jock.the last 2019 cupra is so much nicer than a Golf regarding the interior. Alcantara, nice bucket seat etc…
Golf residuals more than make up for the premium
you can tell the cupra hasn't been driven hard in the past, 350 miles to a full tank 😲, i think mine gets maybe 260 at best (range calc is done on past refuels)
Finally someone else who gets the same mpg as me out of a cupra😂
Mines got 395 range when I fill it up 😂
I also got 50mpg on a motorway run...
@@alexanderbuckland refuse to believe your car was ever out of comfort mode then. My 2.0TDI with the same size fuel tank gets that mileage out of a full tank... I am heavy footed but again its a diesel.
@@damiandynski1804 no need on a motorway run.
It does seem to struggle to go higher than about 26 anywhere else though...
@@alexanderbuckland so on the motorway you get 395? that would make sense, i get around 550 maybe 600
Your in Watford
I test drove the Golf R - too loud a drone in sport mode. It immediately put me off - how can anyone deal with that? The cupra looks more fun, cheaper to service and cheaper to buy! I dont race off the lights so haldex doesn't bother me !
Start/Stop system?!?! Everyone I know codes that shit offff😂
Love my 3dr Cupra 280, had from new and now done 90k with no problem. Has 350bhp upgrade and I've never been bested in the mid range. My 4th Cupra and the best yet.
Bloody problem with these cars is the water pump and thermostat. Mine has coolant leak on my cupra 300 AWD four year old 33k on clock 🤷🏻♂️
Happens to quiet a few unfortunately. I was lucky with my cupra, never had an issue with over 40k miles.
I had to change water pump and thermostat after 120k km. I heard that we should use coolant G12 instead of G13 to save our water pump.
Ayyy watford
How about you do a drag race and a rolliing race of both cars
I wanna see a Golf R MK7 not the 7.5 the mk7 vs a seat Leon Cupra 300
Off the line the golf r Will win because of its launch
But I wanna see a rolling race of both
They both need to be automatic aswell
MK7 R because it will be more fair the 7.5 are has more power than the mk7
Cupra will win everytime. Doesn’t have 4wd so is about 100kg lighter for the same power
Late reply. The power are the same on all cupras 280 290 300 same as the golf r/s3. It's all a marketing strategy.
@@Insetta no lad the 280 has about 300hp the 290s are about 305 ish then 300s see about 310/315
@@cupra2Jock. m140i smoke those garbage cupras

i have a 2018 cupra 300 with pilot sport 4s tyres, i go round roundabouts quicker than this fella and no tyre squill, change the tyres mate.
the cupra has those exact tyres on it
@@ParagonCarsLondon oh fair enough mate, dont know why mine are quite, sorry mate didnt mean to mug you off.
@@andyclacey2980 no worries 🤣
@@ParagonCarsLondon great video.
Tyres are critical, so is having the diff serviced
FWD vs AWD
i mean u do drive 58 mph. Very few people would ever do that on a highway so ur not really showing how it would do in the real world
M25 London that is about average speed.
The cupra interior is absolute gash 😂😂
Who else felt like the cupra was soo much heavier ?
Cupra looks old like a generation behind inside & out.
Really? Miles better looking than the golf
@@ResevoirGod Not with that interior from the 90’s
@@johnguidetti5839 what specifically about it is reminiscent of the 90s?
@@johnguidetti5839 They have virtually the same interior, the only big difference is the touch screen is mounted higher in the SEAT (a better position) than the Golf.
The cupra is a much better looking car, even the styiling inside is better. I could have had the golf but took the cupra and don’t regret it at all.
