Actually, In AK, Joker also jumped when the cloudburst was already activated and batman had retrieved the power cell and went to put it in the batmobile to fix it. There was a hallucination where the joker jumped with batman. As a person who finished AK for 2 times I think It was both funny and weird lol.

Early gold batman tendes to kill all of his enemies (or leave them to die) as the writers felt like he was not a good match for serialization;
Joker was his first recurring villain, and falling into bottomless pit has been the writers modus operandi to have him removed without killing him alright.
Also, his fist apparent death in 52, when things aeemed to be more consinstent, was falling down into a factory chimney

The funny thing is in the early batman comics in almost every story with joker he would almost always die at the end by falling down something and then he would explain how he survived in his next appearance and turn out to be alive.
Falling down somewhere where you can't see the bottom is an easy way to leave ambigous while still giving the jolt of probable death.
It's funny how it's referenced in TheBatman animated series

Fans still complained about Batfleck killed, but probably ignored or didn’t watched that Batman in Batman (1989) and the games based on the 1989 film had killed the Joker who murdered his parents when Bruce Wayne/Batman was a kid in that universe, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, and the Dark Knight trilogy when Batman killed his friend Harvey Dent who had become Two-Face (even though he saved Gordon’s son and likely didn’t intend to kill)

That's "Finale" by Danny Elfman, from the ending of Batman 89, where the camera rises to the top of a building where Batman stands looking at the Bat-signal in the sky. It was used in the trailers for Batman Forever and Batman & Robin but never in the movies themselves.
