  • Hello everyone, In today's video we are going to pruning our sugar apple (Annona squamosa). The reason why we are pruning our sugar apples (if you haven't yet already done so) is so we focus energy on new growth & flowers.
    We also trim to invigorate the branches below and make them thicker and stronger base to hold bigger fruits.
    You can also remove last season's sugar apple leaves as by now March 31st, 2021 all Annonaceae fruit trees should be budding out and pushing new growth in Central & Southern Florida.
    It is important to keep sugar apple nice and trimmed as it can support fruit better in the future.
    Sugar apple is a tropical fruit tree that grows very well in a pot as well as in the ground, in this tutorial we are trimming sugar apples I have in pots.

      I would suggest a balanced fertilizer such as ‘Osmocote indoor and outdoors’ as well as pruning your sugar apple about 1/3 of the branches. After pruning the branches it will flower off the wood that is pruned. Good luck!

    hi, I only have one custard apple tree in 25 inches pot, I will be will like to transplant it on the ground this year. it is flowering right now. if only I had seen your pruning video I probably had prune it early. But I have many questions for you. what type of fertilizer do sugar apples need and when do you fertilizer them? do I need to hand pollinate them too? how about water do they like a lot of water, I know some months can be rough especially in south Florida. please help! thank you so much. love the pruning video too.

    • @gardenflorida
      @gardenflorida  Před 3 lety

      Hello Nancy, You may apply 'Osmocote Indoor & Outdoor' its a great fertilizer that sugar apples respond well too. Fertilizer is best applied to sugar apples in early spring time just as they are starting to wake up from dormancy as they are pushing fresh green buds as thats when they are hungry and want a boost of nutrience for the spring & summer growing season. Sugar apples LOVE water, They are native to South America where it rains super often - dont be afraid to over water them they will appreciate it. Hope this helps Nancy.

    Hello, my sugar apple tree had two flowers 2 years ago and does not seems to flower again. I trim it every year. I have it in a clay container that I move indoor in winter and take out late spring because I am in zone 7 thus our last frost is in early to mid May. I purchased the tree since 2018. Please advise

    • @gardenflorida
      @gardenflorida  Před 3 lety

      You need to manually strip its leaves , about 25% of leaves towards the tips of the branches to invigorate flower growth.

    How long does a sugar apple tree tak eto mature. I have one in a large pot. I only transplanted it 3 months ago. It has just one main branch and its floweing like crazy. what to do? I am goingto remove flowers as the tree is way too young. please advise. thx

    • @gardenflorida
      @gardenflorida  Před 3 lety +2

      Sugar apples take about 3 - 4 years to fully mature. It is good that you will remove the flowers because if the tree is very young it is better to focus energy towards green vegetative growth of the sugar apple tree.

    is pollination compulsory for sugar apple plant ? each and ever flower also to be pollinated ?

    • @gardenflorida

      Some sugar apple varieties can pollinate on their own. 'Na Dai' Vietnamese is a good one that pollinates on its own.

    • @gardenflorida
      @gardenflorida  Před 3 lety

      It could be to many reasons such as sun exposure, nutrients etc. but if no leaves it could be lacking nitrogen in the soil. I would suggest feeding it with a natural fertilizer or a slow release fertilizer that has micronutrients

      Your sugar apple should flower within a month to a month in a half. But also flowering is also encouraged by adding micronutrients to the sugar apple as well.
