Very good information! Yes, if we do trim the top, we are estimulating The sideways grow, so a big tree is ever a big tree. Some people prun 2 metres back the whole canopy every year, but not in all cases the tree bares fruit in this way. I have most of mine earher small varieties, or dwarf ones. A big tree pruned is a big one , anyway, it has the growing habit of a big tree, ever shall be a big boss at your yard.😊 Be safe, cheer times folks.

    Great video!!!
Paul, if I may ask, can you do an video of you actually pruning one of your mango trees once the season is over this year? It would be wonderful to see the actual decision making process of what needs cutting back and why.
    Thank you in advance!!!

Thanks, Paul. I’m way over here next to Disneyland on the West Cost in California. I’m kind of learning about all this mango business. Apparently, even as references in this video, California is much different in terms of weather, I presume. There’s a lot of other knowledge that you dispense which is worthwhile for growing mangos here. Once again, thank you.

Have a 60 year old Pettigrew at about 30' and a 35 year old Zil at about 20', cut them back to 7' two years ago. The Zil died and but the Pettigrew needs to be cut back again. Like Walter said, the big wounds have not healed and one of the branches coming out next to the wound had so many mangos it broke off. I probably got about 150 off it this year. One thing I noticed about this mango is that the first fruit aren't even worth eating, but by the end of the season they are amazing, and their ripening time is spread out over a month and a half. Picked the first fruit in the beginning of June and still have 4 on the tree.

Love him for trying so hard to dwarf mangos for “the people”we are very grateful. We need dwarf mango varieties since the yards ( since I moved here in 79) have shrunk down even more in South Florida.

Great interview Paul. Can you go into detail by example and explain what is a flush, how to identify it and how to identify old wood or hard wood from new. These terms are thrown around but never fully explained an shown. Thanks keep up the great work.

I’m just moved in to a new house with a massive mango. The base trunk is 30-40 inches wide and the tree is 30 ft tall. The drip line is probably 60-70ft in diameter. It seems he is recommending that I cut it down. Dang it

good timing for this topic.I need to trim quite a bit off of mine. thanks Paul.
Question: I have an excellent tasting mango, and I lost the tag for it and don't remember the name.
Is there a way I can post a photo or 2 to see if it can be identified?
I looked at a ton of photos and I can't find an exact match

    • @FruitfulTrees

Better to take the mango to someone to taste for a better identification
