Great squid catch session. Like your rig. Circle hooks with a Snell knot plus a 5 0r 6 hook are great - the hook rolls into the side of the fish's mouth and is easy to release unless they swallow the bait .

What a lovely area you are in, the water looks so clean and clear. Beware Cormorants, I have caught two of them over the years when casting with bait, they are a bugger to get off the hook 😊Nice fish, do you ever keep a Gummy or two to eat?

When I hook a ray or skate from kayak I wear them out and then can usually flip them upside down and unhook them with pliers. This uses up some fishing time but I don't lose the rig and the ray doesn't have a hook stuck in its mouth until it rusts away. If you did that I think it would make for really cool video.
Good on you mate. It takes a quite a long time for a hook to rust away and it is rusting while embedded in the fishes guts or mouth, site for infection. I caught an old male hook jawed trout once in Vic and the skin had grown over the hook which was foul hooked on the side of its head. A stainless steel hook and could not rust away. The rays have bony plates in their mouth so hook removal should be possible.
this skate was gut hooked, I couldn't reach the hooks. Looking back I should've tried to cut the line closer to it's mouth though. My apologies

Cheap lures can have great and quality bodies but they save money by having appalling rings and hooks. Even show them salt water on TV and they’ll rust by morning! 😂

@@mattyboy.1 my mate and I caught a snapper and a dhu. Being an idiot, we ate the dhu first and then the snapper. We could not eat the snapper coz it tasted bad. Not saying the snapper tastes bad, the dhu was so good it made the snapper taste bad.
