Yes but what does it stop into? Even nothingness is something. It's hard to imagine a stopping point, let alone endlessness. That would mean even God has a space he can't entirely fill.
That's not something we can fathom yet. We perceive with the senses. I agree with you.
I can sort of imagine infinite space and eternal time, but the concept of what was before there was anything even time is what truly boggles me. This is why I find Guth’s eternal inflation and multi verse concept the most acceptable, not that I can even pretend to understand the intricacies of his theory.
Indeed..the universe is infinite. If the inflation theory is correct and our knowledge about dark energy is also correct, than it means the universe will continue expanding for ever. And for ever = infinite.
Doesn't have to be, just cause you lack imagination doesn't mean it has to be how you think it is.
I like very much Paul Davies commentary on the various hypothesis regarding the Multi-verse, Cosmos concepts. We must remember that these are not in any way factual, we have no actual information (at the moment, I must say) to support these concepts; but we humans love to dream up ideas, postulate, investigate - we are a very curious species are we not?
9:43 Imagine the enormity of "pocket universes" being as small as pin heads or sunflower seeds, compared to our currently observable universe... Do that again, a hundred thousand more times! It's pretty hard if not impossible to comprehend.
And imagine every black hole leads to a new pocket, so they are infinitely nested 🤯
I absolutely love Robert's videos. His interaction with his guests is as though he's reading our minds. We basically see a flat horizon, blurred by distance to the point where we can currently see no farther, and for some hubristic reason we claim to know how far the universe stretches beyond our ability to see. Our curiosity is our greatest tool. The so-called sphere of observation, dependant on the speed of light and the age of the universe may be flawed. The inflationary period may have been far longer.

I just feel the huge magnitude it's beyond comprehension. Our world is a quark in comparison and still someone there claims that we are important and at the center of everything.

I use to get a weird feeling when I was a child as I was drifting off to sleep. It felt like my consciousness was outside of me and it was alone floating around in the middle of outer space. It was so far away from anything and it was such a lonely, empty feeling that it would frighten me and I’d wake up. I’ve tried to remember what it was like now that I’m an adult but I’ve never been able to go back to that place or recreate that feeling I had.
Had those same experiences as a child too.
Carl Sagan said it best in 1981. "The Cosmos is all that is or was or ever will be. Our feeblest contemplations of the Cosmos stir us - there is a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation, as if a distant memory, of falling from a height. We know we are approaching the greatest of mysteries."
I wish Close To Truth would build a website and allow everyone to contribute their theory where the community can upvote the voices that wouldn't otherwise get an opportunity to have their voice be heard. Instead of regurgitating the same theories, there are many, MANY brilliant people out there who are sitting on real answers to scientific breakthroughs but they will never be heard. We need to change that.

This is my favourite channel, with all the interesting questions and answers from the scientific point of view to the comments of regular people, taking part in the conversations and learning much from the professionals about the subject.
It's entertaining and interesting at all times.
My weird thought to the topic is, that we could be living in a very large body, and that there are multiple other bodies with the same structural conditions. Like in our body, we are some kind of bacteria, molecules,viruses or cancer cells that are about to destroy the organ earth.
There are good cells and there are bad cells, who is who?

When I was a little girl, I liked watching the stars in the sky at night but sometimes I was filled with fear all of a sudden when I was doing it in spite of the fact that I was too young to think of death.
Think about falling to earth from a great height... it's the same with the Stars. Are they above us or below us?...

@@rukathehamsteratwork8896 I think I understand. With no atmosphere there's no sound throughout the depths and vastness of space. Like ships passing in the night. Maybe noticed, but no interaction. And if they were space ships, the solitude would be overwhelming. Our very Earth is like a space ship huddling frantically around our little star, barely protected from the cold vacuum of the unforgiving distances between the Stars. Expand this farther out and the stars huddle together in the galaxies with amazing incomprehensible gulfs keeping them seemingly forever apart. The comforting presence of not being alone, of being connected with others, having basic survival needs met, physically and emotionally allows for sanity and progress.

This series is great. But since we are able to comprehend neither a finite cosmos or an infinite cosmos and since we don't know what constitutes 95% of our universe, (dark energy and matter), aren't our theories just speculation and not science? This doesn';t mean we shouldn't speculate, just that we should be realistic and admit our limitations-which most of these cosmologists do.
I think Paul Davies makes the most sense Trying to explain the creation of our universe by positing infinite universes (a multiverse) just kicks the can down the road. What created the multiverse ?
But keep up the questioning. We are gradually learning more and someday maybe we will be able to answer the big questions: the configuration of the cosmos and the "first cause."
One subject I would like to see seriously explored here is UAPs (formerly UFOs). Anybody who has taken the time to study this subject and distinguish the fluff from extremely reliable sightings all over the world for many years, knows this is a real phenomenon. Of course we don't know what they are or who is behind them. But isn't the existence of intelligent life beyond earth the most fascinating question of all?

I try to keep myself away from these questions from time to time as my brain can go deep in to thought and I start questioning my own existence. The question of “why are we here” will always be mans biggest achievement to solve, but a question that will always be theorised with no evidence to support any answer, no matter the technology. I am fascinated with the universe and the endless possibilities it bringsz
Why do You attribute such great importance to the existence of human?
Why do You think we are important to the Cosmos?
Why should we have a great goal, and not be just a byproduct of the development of Reality?
These are the questions I ask myself.
It’s better to assume there is no reason. Why is a bad question.

Thinking about something with no end - without at the same time thinking about the idea of 'time' is some-
how very counterintuitive.
Our 'observable' universe
approaches - 100,000,000,000 light years across. Without insulting human arrogance,
I feel we're screwed either way - or every way. Because either the universe has 'boundries' -
in which case one must explain: 'bounded by what'
or, - there simply are no boundries, in which case one must explain endlessness without mentioning anything about 'time'.
Personally, beyond our ability to 'measure' - we've simply no 'capability' to understand.
Three things inspire me from this video: size comparison, what actually is, and 'thinking outside'.
First, kind of a weird way
of grasping just how big (or how small we are) the universe (only observable) actually is.
People are capable of gauging and appreciating the idea of 'size' like nothing else. Well, think about the universe's size this way: take our tiniest - most fundamental unit of matter, - the atom. Now if we could scale-up the atom itself to instead represent the (not entire) universe and instead look at it instead of the sky -
that tiny infinitesimal atom,
would be SO huge, - that no-matter how far away from the atom you stood -
you could never ever 'take it all in' - that is, see from one end to the other.
Second, 'you and I actually cannot see what is truly there'. What you see, is actually less than a sliver of what is actually right in front of you. It sounds crazy, but it is absolutely the truth. And if 'dark matter' does not 'directly' indicate meta-dimensional
existence - then I don't know what can.
And last, we will never know what it is that 'confines us' unless or until we can look 'in' from the outside. You cannot know from inside what your house looks like, unless both you 'and your mind' are looking at it from the outside.
This obviously means that not some things, but 'most' things can never ever be known.

The universe is so vast, you'd think it was endless!!
The universe will never be any larger than a singularity against the backdrop of infinity. Infinity is the key to the universe and the only true constant.
I don't think it's right to say 'the real possibility of multiple universes' as we don't know whether it's possible. There might be some unknown property or constraint of the cosmos that means multiple universes aren't possible. The possibility of a claim has to be demonstrated, otherwise it has to remain in the very long 'don't know" list!
The moment you measure it and see the reading, universe increases by 10 sq m. It goes on. Doesn't stop. Keep measuring. Keep asking...

Fascinating, and a joy to watch thank you very much for this channel. One question: I believe the portrait of ‘Indians’ with which I believe Max means to say the indigenous people or the First Nation people, is a bit limited when he describes that they only knew the land around them. Please do correct me if I’m wrong, however I believe the First Nation people are very much in touch with the Cosmos and even with Sky Gods, or Extra Terrestrials/Extra Dimensionals which they see as part of their ancestral lineage.
Maybe you could do an episode on the knowledge they have on the origins of, and the neighbors in our multi/universe? I would be very interested in finding out more. (You might already have done so, then I’m sorry. I just landed on your channel.
Attempting to contemplate how breathtakingly enormous the universe happens to be is a humbling experience.
Answers we are seeking up above are right inside ourselves. So many possibilities so many outcomes can’t we see we are exploring ourselves.
Great episode Robert, talking with some of the world's greatest cosmologists. To me , only Paul Davies seemed reluctant to go full throttle with the currently in vogue multiverse scenarios and the implied absurdities of infinities. A wise man indeed. Too many have given up on our singular universe because of faith in very esoteric math , abstract unproven concepts like "false vacuums" and superstrings along with the fact nobody knows how to solve the fine tuning issues at this time. Many of these people sound like they are trying to invent a new discipline, applied metaphysics.
The scientists are not as close minded as it may appear to you. Some physicists may prefer a model over another, but they didn’t have “given up” anything. They gladly change their views if the empirical facts point in a different direction tomorrow. Therefore I would avoid the word “faith” in this context as it has a strong connotation to religious (faith), and that’s not even in the same ballpark.
@@grandeau3802 To this layman, all this appears as a means to explain how Quantum superposition waveforms collapse without making Neil Bohr's reference to Consciousness as the only means by which such waveforms collapse at all. Which leads to Einstein's question, “Do you really believe that the moon isn’t there when nobody looks?”

With all this vastness it would seem there would be a vastness of possibilities, including the possibilities of other living beings. This brings to mind the question of why we have not experienced any other living beings of other worlds possibly much further along than we are, that possibility would surely seem to exist.

The host is a great evangelist for cosmology.
Size is relative. Time is relative. If you move fast enough the whole visible universe would measure 1 meter and all stars would die in 1 second. Bunch of matter in same reference frame to create complex structures like us. And self replicating metric field. There are others causally disconnected reference frames with matter far far away. Matter is temporary, fields are fundamental.
At 15:50 Andrei is talking about a size of (10 to the 28) centimeters, If I'm not mistaken, it is a 1 with a 28 zeros in cm.
How much would that be converted into light years?

American universities have done an incredible job in providing platforms for people from all over the world. From these great scientists to Einstein. Just realized this while watching this video.
Anyway the universe is unfathomably large and expanding. I don't think it's even possible measure due to the rate of expansion.
The limits made by causality or speed of massless entities like light makes it hard to conceive how far it actually goes. I personally believe it may curve on itself such that you may theoretically return to where you started as though you're going around a globe.
Human consciousness is the universe experiencing it'self.

Luved the discussion point... a few stats that I try to put size in perspective to myself .. one is that it would take a person almost 32 years just to count to 1 BILLION... the other stats?...the Earth would fit into the Sun over a MILLION times and the Sun would fit into the largest known star ( Stephenson 2-18 ) 10 BILLION times by volume.... the Milky Way Galaxy is 150,000 lilght years across ( a light year being 6 TRILLION miles).. the largest known Galaxy is IC 1101 at 5,5 MILLION light years across... one stat I saw was that there are 2 TRILLION Galaxies.....difficult to comprehend numbers that large but gives a little perspective together with Carl Sagan's " Little Blue Dot" .... how insignificant we are in one respect but privileged to be 'alive' to observe and ponder the cosmos... roll on the James Webb Space Telescope!!!
The Universe is what's inside the box and what's outside the box.
Has anyone ever seen the movie Osmosis Jones ? Imagine that a cell in side of our body is a round universe, inside the cell is millions of other smaller cells like galaxies, and inside of those galaxy’s are stars and planets, and on those planets are animals, and inside of those animals are blood cells, and inside of those cells are more galaxies, and it goes on and on. For all we know our universe is really just a cell inside of a gods blood stream… what if the Big Bang was really a new cell being born. 🤷🏻♂️🤯
If the universe is finite in space and time you can always ask, 'what's beyond that? Or what happened before that?' ...positing a universe that is infinite in both space and time takes car of that problem.

I really like the music. It sounds like maybe just one person or group is responsible for the it all or most of it. Or not? If so, who is it? It reminds me vaguely of an artsy, avant-garde jazz band called The Bad Plus. That's a bit of a stretch but, whoever it is, it's well done.
Too vast for us to comprehend, yet too small to contain some people's egos.
Infinite space...
Infinite possibilities....
How vast is the cosmos? We don't know and there may be no way to find out. So far it is at least as large as our most sensitive instruments and the measurements we can infer from them can detect. What lies beyond? We don't know. As we build increasingly more powerful instruments and improve our ability to model, measure, calculate from what they can detect can only be speculated on now. And it might always be that way. As for why, personally I find the question itself absurd.
"Zillions of galaxies." Is that a scientific term? 😄
The cosmos is big. I mean really, really big. Even the very reliable engine in my Honda would break down before I got half way. That's how big it is.
Infinity guarantees that anything that can exist should exist.
A question that will never be known. Anyone can extrapolate and hypothesize the universe and all it entails. But, for all, there is no way of knowing. Just as we will never know what if anything, is on the other side. That could be heaven.
Not as Vast as the human Ego!
Or the universe can be relatively small. Everything we see out there may be ourselves, just in the past!
The most exciting thing in cosmology will be results from the JWST when commissioning is completed later this year.
I'd put my money on both dark matter & energy being non-existent. We are trying to extrapolate too much too soon about the universe. One thing we can agree on is just how incomputably amazing the universe is!
What I'd love to know is where all energy comes from - it seems like a free breakfast, lunch & dinner!
