And at a time when women weren't expected to be feisty. The Jane Austen type heroines always leave me cold - their only aim in life was to find a husband - but Anne Lister was in a class of her own
For once that phrase is correct (it's often used so loosely that I always think "No, it's OF the time). With Anne Lister she definitely was ahead of her time and writing in code about her exploits. Hats off to her love though because she had a lot to lose by becoming Anne Lister's "companion"
This closing credit song is the icing on the cake of the best show on television. My wife and I sing this at the end of every episode.

How do you manage to sing it? do you sing the sounds or the words? It makes me very difficult that the words are not fully pronounced, and the names and part of the words are merged into one continuous word and nothing is separated by anything - can you analyze and comment on this? or I don't understand something?

I thought this was an old British folk song until now.
Nigel G. Mitchell too much syncopation in the piano for it to be of the era. Great tune though and fits the mood well

@@markos1963 Syncopation in modern versions of folk tunes is common enough. I'm guessing they wrote it, but also wouldn't have been surprised if it was a folk tune originally. It's modal, for instance.

living in West Yorkshire I’ve known of and been a fan of Anne Lister for some time. But It wasn’t until the BBC drama I had heard this song. I’m also a fan of northern folk and this is perfect. Good job ladies.

I went to see O'Hooley and Tidow the other week not knowing any songs but it was a gig. Little did I know how wonderful a gig it was and as you say addictive.Their songs haven't left my head since.
Its unusual topic for a song but cool. So weird how it works so well for the show many years later
I'm a woman who plays BattleTech and MechWarrior genre games. I've taken to giving my characters the nickname "Gentleman Jack" because of the inspiration that Anne Lister is to me... and it *completely* makes sense, a lady-MechWarrior who consistently pilots Heavy brawling 'mechs, is a lesbian, and constantly wrecks her opponents who are men when they challenge her ability or authority.
This song is straight up on my playlist for my stompy robot action, and it is *so good.*
