- Wildlife Photography Tips - The Iconic shot! In this video, I capture one of Wildlife's most Iconic Shots, THE PUFFIN & FISH
This week I ventured to Seahouses which is a small fishing village situated in Northumberland National Park on Englands North East Coast. Seahouses is a gateway to the Farne Islands. There are many boating companies that offer trips to witness the magnificence of the Islands from the various coastlines. You can even land on a couple of the Islands too.
This time is very special for enthusiasts of the beautifully coloured bird that is the Puffin! In July their single egg has hatched and the chick needs feeding. Both the male and female puffin take turns bringing fish. The adults feed the chick fish for approximately 45 days. If you want to capture the iconic Puffin shot with the fish in its beak, you better be quick!
This is where the boat companies come into their own. They offer special trips to the Farne Islands for photographers and Wildlife enthusiasts alike.
I'm a frequent user of one such company which I can't recommend highly enough. "Serenity Farne Islands Boat Tours" (tinyurl.com/yc...) I know the skipper Andrew quite well. He and his staff are very informative and I guarantee you won't be disappointed with your trip.
I hope you like the video. All comments are welcome

Some amazing shots there buddy. The hints and tips really encourage wildlife novices such as myself to get out and have a go :)
Cheers as always Paul. Where is your vlog this week? I was looking forward to it 👍
.... go on.... have a go ;-)
Brilliant video Gary! 😀 I love puffins they're so charismatic and that tip about getting down to the eye level of the animal you're shooting is spot on!
Thank you
Hi Gary I have just returned from a recent trip to the UK. We wife and I did the Farne Island boat trip but unfortunately didn't get to land. still got some terrific shots though. We did manage to get on the isle of May which was an absolute awesome experience. I have a Nikon D5600 with a Tampon 18-400 lens which I really got to test out. I call myself an accidental photographer and lucky if they turn out but I enjoy every minute of. This video and the advice you gave really helped so thank you so much. Regards Phil
So glad you had a great visit and you found my video helpful 👍👍
Thanks for sharing great tips and locations. Great shots you got. Awesome!
Roger Nilsson - cheers Roger 👍🏻
watched your mach loop videos and was amazed at your high quality shots of tornadoes etc, actually managed to find the back way up thx to your video...cheers.
Hi Rob, so glad it helped. Did you park ok? get any nice shots?
Great video Gary. Shooting puffins in the wild (with a camera of course 😀) stands absolutely on my bucket list. The pictures you took are absolutely awesome.
Brilliant shots and video Gary, just wonderful, will add the Farne Islands to my location wish list.
Another added Sid :)
Beautiful amazing shots. is on the bucket list
It's a great place Mark. Thank you
fantastic shots looks like a fun day
Justin Mortimer - just can’t shout about the day enough 👍🏻
One good tern deserves another! Great portraits!
Thank you, very kind of you to say 👍
Great vlog Gary. Love the red jacket. Excellent photography.
Incredible shots!!! Bravo! Love the red jacket, you rebel. Ha! Enjoying the channel! As always, be well.
Wow, you are awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for saying 👍
Great stuff Gary - and excellent timing I am going tomorrow so the tips are perfect. Also after watching your vlog we went to Wast Water last weekend - again stunning. great stuff Gary thanks again
Great stuff Gary,wish I was there 👍
Cheers Gary 👍
Absolutely fantastic set of pics there, looks like a great day.
many thanks
John
It's an amazing place, John. Pretty much guarantee a great shot
Gary, nice video Very colorful birds
Yeah but not as colourful as my jacket :)
Great place Gary, go there often myself. Nice to see you on Serenity II with captain Andy. He does a great blog and he’s not too bad a photographer himself! Entertaining vlog as always...
Great vlog Gary. I was there myself a few weeks ago and we had a great time photographing the seabirds.
Cracking shots and tips Gary. Thanks for sharing 😀👍
That's great. I'm amazed all over again at how you can turn your hand, or camera, to so many genres of photography and make a success of each one. Great tips, too. I'm an utter ignoramus about wildlife photography, but this entices me!
Great photos and tips. We were in Newfoundland, Canada for puffins. We were early so there weren't big numbers and it was fog/rain almost everyday.
Very enjoyable. I really like the music you've chosen for the pictures around six minutes in.
A nice day for it, like the shoots, great tips and encouragement for all, thanks again Gary
Cheers Phil 👍🏻
Great vlog gary.i was also there on friday on the full day trip,it was my 1st time there and i was blown away with the shots i got.it is a must plact to go for anyone interested in wildlife photography,And like yourself my objective was to get the iconic puffin shot, pleased to say i did get it,can't wait to go back again.
Hi Garry, A really brilliant video, I can honestly say I really enjoyed it, and you certainly did nail some awesome shots, well done Ian
Great vlog, fantastic tips, love the added humour, always enjoyable. Thank you Gary.
Just trying to hide my stupidity :)
Auto-ISO is a great tip! I've struggled with proper exposure for birds in flight against clear skies. Gonna give that a try! Many thanks.
Great photos, video and commentary 👏. To see Puffins in their natural environment is my dream. Thank you for sharing your amazing experience. Greetings from 🇨🇦
P.S. Garry, your red jacket should be your hallmark 😉
Simply stunning shots mate... my fave was the puffin landing, amazing compositions and great tips on eye level etc... cheers Jase 👍
Cheers Jase
Amazing video Gary! Great photos as usual! :)
Some cracking shots there mate, I photographed the Puffins on Skomer Island which was so much fun+
As well as the hat sounded like you needed some ear muffs!! Love the shot of the puffin coming into land with his feet down...awesome.
Didn't need ear muffs Nick, I left the wife at home :)
Planning my trip for next year Thanks keeping me on why I want go
You'll have to go it's brilliant
oh i love puffins!
thanks for sharing this with us!
really really enjoyed watching this!
Thanks for saying 👍
Gary what a fun day, I was 30 when I left Newcastle area for CA , went to Seahouses for great fish and Chips but never made it over to the islands .. its now on the list . Will have to make sure that I blend in like you !
lol it's all about your blending in skills :)
Cheers Keith
I definitely want to go there.
Hi Jon. Great to meet you at the Loop. I'll be in touch soon. P.S. when are you heading back to the loop?
Another great video Gary,
its a fantastic place even without a camara and Great photos as usual!
Absolute stunning vlog Gary! What a great set of great images. That location is a Dream.
Cheers Patrick
Great video Gary. Lovely shots and some brilliant tips. Live quite close to Skomer Island in Pembrokeshire so guess where I want to go on my next trip. Puffins here I come :-))
Thank you Elaine. You'll love it 👍
On the back of this video I am going to the Farne islands next week, as I am on holiday in Yorkshire. I really enjoyed this video, some fantastic shots there Gary. Your enthusiasm is very infectious. Thank you.
Steve Pettit - thank you Steve 👍🏻 very kind of you to say
Lol I was there on the same boat a few days ago. I got some great chick shots (feathered variety) and Puffins galore. I was at the Ogwen Valley a couple of days ago. Shot 360 VR too.
It's an awesome spot for wildlife. Di you get any good shots?
Got some good flight shots of Puffins and some others. Got a really nice shot of a Puffin being robbed by three black headed gulls :) Your photos however were amazing. I want to change my Sigma 150-500 to a Nikon 200-500. The Arctic Terns were interesting! I'm off to France, Belgium and on to Switzerland in less than two weeks. I have planned another two week war tour but will focus mainly on 360 VR photos/video this time.
Loved this Vlog :-)
Cheers Richie 👍👍
More beautiful images Gary! I especially like the flying puffins you captured, carrying the fish back to their nests. Lovely focus on the eyes of the birds. I love watching your vlog because you explain your process so well and make it accessible and understandable to everyone. Keep up the great work sir.
ldstirling thanks you kindly for saying 👍🏻
My wildlife setup is a D7000 and an old 300/4.5ai manual lens so I usually focus trap flying birds.
It's not about the journey but getting there, that's all that counts 👍👍
Camo clothing is essential kit because it conceals bird droppings. I've been bombarded by flying foxes on a few occasions and it's messy work. Great vlog Gary and the images are stunning. Greg
Wicked shots!! Bringing back memories of my trip to Skomer this year. Had two shots in mind and managed to get them both. Puffins are amazing little birds but buggers to get when they are flying.
Thank you Stephen. Yeah they're tricky little devils :) worth it when you nail it though :)
Awesome vlog as always and amazing shots loves the one of the puffin putting out his landing gear when coming in to land with his fish. Looks like a great place to visit . 👍
Great vlog Gary, awesome place to get the birds in there breeding environment 👍👍
paul sparkes - just an amazing place Paul :)
I watch quite a few photographer vlogs but I've constantly enjoyed yours since I discovered it. This one, in particular, was amazing. Well done. You always take great photos but also, I like the way you deliver your content. Thanks for sharing Gary. Another awesome vlog.
Kelly Pettit - and it’s comments like this that make it all worthwhile. Thank you Kelly 👍🏻
Nailed it.
Gary,
Ah, Puffins, the cutest of the seabirds!!
But, are they tasty?
The slight overcast really saturates those colors, but the vivid color seems to also manifest in the sun. Great! The eye-level tip is gold. The gesture of the birds in your shots is very well chosen, my friend.
Unfortunately, having played (American) football in my youth, my knees are like broken glass. So, my eye-level shots are restricted to Moas, Ostriches, Grizzlies, , Apes, and Musk Oxen.
The Puffins in flight-shots have a "painterly" quality that is very fetching.
And, uh, your beak looks a bit "orange." I wonder if that's a residual manifestation of your recent nose-ground interface, or are you, uh, you-know, uh ...mating?
Thank-You,
Mike
Super video Gary, my daughter is going there soon so I will share this video with her.
Excellent Garry, would love to get our club to do a trip like that...I will be suggesting it...
Great vlog Gary, the puffins are amazing birds and you got some great images.
Excellent video. Amazing shots ! Hope to be there with you even with red coat. Maybe these birds think that you are a red fish ???
lol thank you
Reminds me of my week on the Isle of May (found in the Firth of Forth) last year. I was lucky enough to spend a week on location and photograph the seabird population. The Puffin were always the star attraction with the day trippers but we had everything from Terns to Shags so you could try out different skills on the different species. Brilliant tips, and loved the vlog.
Thank you Douglas, very kind 👍
Puffins are on my bucket list; such a beautiful little bird and a challenge to get a good shot. Just got back from camping and getting shots of 1000s of terns and gulls. Some good advice as well with learning information on the topic of your shots. Too many want to just arrive and take the shot. You need to be patient and pay attention and the rewards are fantastic.
Well said, Owen. Patience is a virtue as they say. Thanks 👍
Cracking images! Pleasure to watch. I used similar settings. Shutter 2000 and set it in shutter priority. First time I've used shutter priority but seemed fitting. Varied my iso to fit.
They certainly are tricky to shoot but it's fun. Like a shooting game
Hi Gary. Fabulous video ! So glad you covered wildlife photography because it's much harder than a lot of people think. Capturing birds in flight to the standard you've achieved here is bloody difficult, so credit to you for getting such brilliant shots. Had to laugh at the red jacket versus the camouflage gear bit - doesn't make a blind bit of difference at these locations does it ! Cracking video Gary. Many thanks for sharing.
Love the Farne islands, went about a month ago, but the birds were just pairing up & nest building no iconic mouth full of sand eels shots, fantastic little birds & bloody fast, so difficult to catch in flight. You managed some great shots. Think I'll have to give the islands another visit.
gorgeous shots, Thank you
Great vlog Gary as always. I love the farne islands. you have some cracking images, well done
Awesome location. Great tips .
some great shot there --- i will have to return :)
Thank you for taking us all along with you to see the birds :D You got some wonderful images . I loved the one of the puffing that looks like it is dancing in mid air :D You also gave some good info so cheers :D Teddy
You're welcome Teddy. I liked that one too :)
I don't do wildlife photography but you have really great shots !!!
Thank you kindly
Stunning collection of shots Gary, unusual to see ISO set to auto but it totally made sense, catch you later Del.
Derek Willson - cheers Del 👍🏻
Nice explanation of your settings for capturing birds in flight. I really thought you'd mention the odor of guano on the islands! :). If it is anything like our sea lion rookeries it is sure "noteworthy"!
I didn't notice it over my own odour, I really must take a shower :) I should of mentioned it, it stunk :)
Cheers Jack
Some amazing photos buddy
Hi Gary, That was very enjoyable, great shots, thanks so much for sharing.
All the best............Peter.
Well done Gary. Dive bombed and photo bombed and yet undeterred in your efforts. Good tip on shooting the fast movers in manual with Auto ISO. I'll be trying that next time I'm shooting birds in flight. Cheers!
Glad you liked it John. Thank you 👍
Another great Video Gary. You're spot on about the tip of the day, you must get low otherwise the images just don't work. You got some really iconic images their, awesome stuff!!
Watched from my sun lounger in Menorca... another great vlog! Always a highlight of the week watching your enthusiasm and passion present in an amazing way and amazing video!
Vikki Robinson - thank you kindly. Have you still got your yacht?
Great episode Gary. Love the puffins and for a number of years went to Skomer although not been for the last couple, it's a great day out. Some belting images buddy and some great advice for shooting them, the puffins with sand eels is a classic but I had not seen a shot of a razorbill with sand eels before - cool stuff.
Wonderful video, with some wonderful images 👍🏼
Cheers Paul 👍
Brilliant gary gonna go September great tips 👍
There’s no Puffins in September. They nest around June time. It’s still worth a trip.
another great piece of work big man ! keep it up....
Cheers Rob 👍
Wow it’s on my list of places to go both me and the wife want to do just wht you have. On your next trip maybe let us know I’ll come and join you boss. Show you how it’s done hahaha
lol cheers Paul. Not worth visiting now until this time next year
Beautiful place by the looks of it, great advice on the camera work and on getting to know the subject...
Top tip ought to be "don't hold the bird there too long, it isn't posing for photographs, it's waiting for you to bugger off so it can take those sand eels to it's young in the burrow behind you" ;)
Great photos - such neat birds.
Nina Cleven - thank you Nina 👍🏻
Amazing Vlog. I know the RSPB are asking people to send in photos of Puffins with food, so they can analyse what different colonies are eating and try to figure out the huge decline in numbers.
Thanks for the advice too! Subbed !
Thank you Harry. Welcome to the channel
Great tips for shooting puffins in flight. Just wondering how many shots you took on continuous shooting to get a selection of decent images.
Hi Douglas. My camera fires at 17 fps but I only used it in short bursts. It still took quite a few shots before I was happy :)
Toller VLog und natürlich ein paar geniale Aifnahmen!
Nice VLog and some awesome pictures!
Thank you Toby 👍
Wow. Great job. Subscribed!
Jim
Very kind of you Jim, cheers 👍🏼
Great video Gary, as usual. You always make Vlogging look so easy. A real credit to you. 😊
Thank you, Neil. It's just about persistence. I just do it to get me out and about and the viewers hopefully follow. It was difficult for all of us in the beginning.
Gary Gough I really hadn’t appreciated just how much work went into it, or how hard it was. Like I said Gary it’s a real credit to you sir. 😊
I'm your 64th Subscriber. Come on Neil lets make it happen!
Gary Gough thank you. Very very much appreciated. Genuinely honoured 👍
Happy to offer advice you think it'll help
absolutely amazing shots. Its definitely on my bucket list to see the puffins. when you were taking the birds in flight were you in continuous shot or one shot?
What a brilliant vlog Gary, Awesome images. :)
Cheers Mark
Great video Gary full of excellent advice, especially that tip with adding some exposure comp, I always seem to forget that for the first 20 frames or so, over enthusiasm I guess. Did the Terns give you any battle scars that you can brag about? They took a few chunks out of me, no hat lesson learned for next time, or a crash helmet ;)
Hurt like hell. I was being brave to begin with, I soon learnt a lesson though :)
Great stuff Gary, thanks for sharing. Puffins are on my 'to do' list, & I was heading for Bempton Cliffs (next year as it's getting a bit late now) but think I may look into a trip to the Farne Islands.
Nice work Gary made a nice change from landscapes. Enjoyed the vid mate.
Short Rs Photography - thank you 👍🏻
Brilliant, Gary, to tell us your settings used.
One question though (for the in-flight bird photography): why the one step over exposure?
Okay, two questions ;-) What metering method you use?
Thanks for your insights!
Hello Gary, and a very well done indeed! You got some spectacular shots indeed and they are definitely keepers'. Lots of very good advice also included. Looks like you had a fabulous day. Question: Did you have to book way ahead or simply turn-up? And finally, what is the cost of visiting both rocks? Once again, thank you for sharing this amazing vlog - First Class...
Amazing shots Gary and some great tips too. Puffins have got to be one of the best and most iconic birds to capture. Just noticed, which two boring farts pressed dislike? Thanks
Great!
Thank you 👍
great video i have subscribed as a newbie focal length f stop shutter speed on the photos would be nice but really looking forward to watching the rest
Excellent video! Cracking images, and very helpful information! I’ve just recently brought the canon 100-400 Mark II IS and am keen to visit the islands to capture the puffins etc and your info hopefully will help me out! All the best
Dave
It's a cracking lens Dave you'll enjoy using it 👍🏻
When is the best time of year to go to Inner Farne to see the Puffins bring fish back for their young please?
Jun/July is probably the best time to see the puffins with fish in their beaks... Take a look here for more info
www.nationaltrust.org.uk/farne-islands/features/wildlife-calendar
Thank you - hope to go end of Jun with a stop off at Bempton on the way, we are travelling from se Kent.
Enjoyed the video Gary. Off to Northumberland next week and programming in a visit to the Farne Islands. I have been before and am looking for that iconic in flight shot of the puffin with sand eels in its beak - yours were great - no jealousy here!! It would be so easy if they didn't fly like exocet missiles. I shoot Canon and will be using a 7D Mk2 and a 100-400 L (Mk 1). It looks like you were shooting with the Mark 2. How much post processing was involved and did you shoot in RAW?
Mike Kerry - missiles indeed 😁. Not much post processing to be honest and I always shoot in RAW. Cheers Mike 👍🏻
