    "This album was sourced from cassette tapes in George Carlin's personal archives.
    The first track is from a cassette labeled 'Boston Rant' which contains audio from George's early home recordings. We hear him in 1957. He is twenty years old.
    He has a job at NBC Radio WEZE in Boston as a board announcer. He is living the first step of his 'Danny Kaye' plan - become a DJ. He is preparing for the second step - become a stand-up. Soon, he will be fired from WEZE for taking the company station wagon to New York to buy pot.
    Tracks 2-7 are from two cassettes labeled 'MGM Grand in Las Vegas' and dated 9-9-2001 and 9-10-2001. George performed the same set each night. He was preparing to tape his twelfth HBO special in November, which was to be called 'I Kinda Like It When a Lotta People Die.' Clearly, this did not go as planned. The name of the show was changed to 'Complaints and Grievances.' The material included here is what was thrown out or reworked after the attacks on 9-11."

      Thank you for the post of this. Carlin influenced my direction, my comedy, and my thought, realistic view of the world from my extreme youth. Couldn't be more grateful to anyone else in my life.
      Met him once. He bummed a cigarette just to talk and I can't say anything but that he was genuine and great conversation for ten minutes he had before the show.

    • @ShaunCheah
      @ShaunCheah Před 4 lety +10

      I had the most simple request the other day. Needed to pee, didn't want to beg a pub or restaurant to use one of theirs (and probably would've been turned down anyway unless I bought something, which would've meant waiting in line and inconveniencing wait staff with a tiny order just for the pretence... seemed like a whole lot of bullshit just to have a decent piss). I approached a group of four cops. This was around 4am or thereabouts, night patrols had more-or-less ended and the city centre was emptying out. I just asked them if there was a place where I could pee for free within about half-an-hour's walking distance, since that was about how long I had until I couldn't hold it any longer.
      I wasn't truly expecting help; I just wanted information. How would they react to this fairly simple, fairly innocent request? Public urination is illegal; if caugh there would've been a fine or citation or lecture. Work for the cop, embarassment for the citizen. And even if not caught, the city becomes a little bit worse and some civil servant or custodian has to do a little more work to clean off the stink and dry out the wall or pavement. So I figured I'd be a gentleman and inquire about a free public place to pee.
      They were almost entirely unhelpful. They knew of nowhere, they suggested nothing. "Go home," one said. "My home's 17 hours away by airplane; I've only got half an hour." "You're a grown man, we can't help you." "I'm not asking for an escort, I'd just like information on what the best route forward from here is."
      I brought up the train station since that was fairly close, and I knew there was a public toilet there but I also knew that it wasn't free. Suddenly they were very happy to direct me there even though I clarified that it had to be a free location since I didn't have local currency and the money changers weren't open until 10am. So at that point it was clear that they'd say anything to get me out of their hair. (They weren't busy; they were just waiting for something to happen and so had gathered in a group to shoot the shit. If they looked like they were working; I wouldn't've interrupted them).
      Finally I decided to just end things by asking what the laws were out in the woods, beyond the city limits. They all seemed to agree that once I was out of Groningen, it'd be fine. So I said I'd pick a direction and start walking and once I was in the countryside, I'd find a nice patch of trees far from windows and roads and do what comes naturally, and they were relieved that there was a solution that finally meant I could piss off and leave them to their camaraderie.
      After I left, though, I thought fuck it. Cops are gonna lie to me, I'm gonna have lied to the cops. I didn't leave the city, I just wandered around. Turns out there are legal, free places to pee. Next to the canal there was a brick construction that held two urinals with constantly running water, pretty sanitary and robust with good privacy. How did they not know about it? Also, there were port-a-potties (or the European equivalent) in quite a few of the smaller streets. Most even had toilet paper. It's kinda surprising how little knowledge these police officers had over the districts where they were supposed to be maintaining order. All they can do is punish people for peeing in the streets, but they can't prevent it because they lack the knowledge or they simply don't care.
      After such a negative interaction with such a simple, innocent problem, I'm way more wary. Dutch police are supposed to be some of the best in the world, but I don't know if I'd trust them to competently handle anything after an experience like this. Of course I'd still prefer a Dutch cop over an American one, but I think ultimately I'll just go to the local anarchist social club or something for real help. At least in that case you'd be dealing with actual people and not bureaucratic automatons.

    So apparently this CD came out in 2016? I've never seen it on eBay or anywhere. In fact, Time Life has a new box set of mostly DVDs that contains all of Carlin's HBO specials, including the "40 Years of Comedy" one that wasn't included in George's "All My Stuff" set. The Time Life box also has a bunch of unreleased stuff from TV shows where he made an appearance in the 60s and 70s, a network television special that's never been released....and this CD. I was researching that set, and that's the first time I'd heard of this CD.
    I ordered the new Time Life box set last week and it's supposed to be in by Friday. Can't wait!!
