"Design is art that has a job to do." - totes adorbs!
Science- good to see you soaking up the knowledge!
it is department from the computer science it is not art from any side it is just computer science
not because you have to be creative it has to be an art okay in
literature you need creativity but we didn't call it art so design is computer science not art
@@m.e.a.studios4700 it's both science and art.
The more I study from other designers and artists on youtube, the more I'm realizing that college mostly only taught me how to use the tools (very slow, much expense), and hardly anything about designing for success. I've also come across many tutorial videos and webinars that made me regret college altogether as I could have saved so much time and money. My degree didn't get me any full time jobs, but my learned skills brought most of my clients to me by word of mouth, most returning for more, with very little networking effort (but to viewers, DO network!).
My life advice would be to skip college altogether and go straight to the online mentors, where you won't be put into a lifetime of debt for a degree that will mostly be ignored. It is my personal opinion that if you've developed your skills well enough, your work should speak for itself.
*This is only my perspective based on my own life experience, and is not intended to be in any way offensive, but to contribute to discussion.
Jen, Thanks for you POV. I agree about the fact that formal design education is sorely lacking in the real-world graphic business skills building department. That is one reason why I am doing what I am doing here on YT.Sharing all the stuff I learned AFTER I got out of school - the really important stuff that you need to survive and succeed. The one thing you didn't mention though it that school does teach you aesthetics - and that is very hard to teach online. You can also really notice it when someone has not had a formal education when it comes to composition specifically. I know lots of folks who know the tools, but don't have the aesthetic.
There are definitely those who know the tools and don't have aesthetic, I agree. Perhaps it's just my college that was really underwhelming, but they didn't teach me much about composition, and definitely didn't teach me anything about using the golden ratio or the purpose of overshooting in typography (those are just a few things I'm learning on youtube currently). That's sort of what I meant by designing for success, as aesthetic is vitally important.
Jen, you are going about it in the right way! Assessing what you are missing and going after it with continued self-directed learning! Congrats and never stop!
Philip VanDusen thank you for doing what you do!
You rock Jen!
I appreciate your channel so much! As a graphic designer, it's difficult to find quality advice and new tips from an experienced graphic designer. So, thank you again and keep 'em coming! ❤️

"Ask for forgiveness not permission"
Got it, boss!!
Madhukar! I'm so glad you keyed-in on this one point! It is a really important one. Do what you think is right that will make an impact. You will be respected for your take-charge initiative. And VERY rarely will you have to ask for forgiveness, I promise you!

Hi Phillip, I am an architect, in learning. And have finally gathered the balls to start my own. Just wanted to express that your videos have given me a lot of direction on how to go about the sector that I didn't know anything about while I was at college or at the design offices I was working for all this while. Many thanks, and keep up the good work.
Aadi, Congratulations on having the balls to do it. That's awesome. Good luck - so glad I could inspire and influence!
This video means a lot to me. Thank you, Philip!
Thanks Iris Ng! I'm glad it helped. They're great tips!
Many of these lessons really go beyond design--as someone who's coming into design from a software engineering perspective, the ideas of learning the history of one's field, learning the fundamentals (first principles), and life-long learning, in general, are so, so important. Many thanks for the video!
Hey August! Thanks for watching and for your insightful comment. Completely agree.
Feed energy, dont suck it! That is so perfect
You give the most authentic and genuine advice. I really appreciate the help. Thank You!
nupoor- thank you so much - that means a lot to me. I try.

Inspiration comes from anywhere and it doesn't care what your "core" skillset is. Glad I'm fostering ideas.

I live telling my son his speech matters for any and every job he could ever want. I correct him every time and wait until he repeats it correctly before I move on. 😂
I’m going to print these tips and put them on my wall! Thank you!!
Thank you Philip for your precious information and designer most important steps to follow . Good job.
Miss Souma, Happy to help! Share me on social media with your friends and followers! That would be an excellent favor in return. Ciao.

Azat - that's my goal bro - to live a better - more successful - creative life. Cheers!
Probably the most relevant tips and advice I've got for a while
I like how detailed your video is and also the way you responded to each of the comments. .. lost my heart to the way you presented everything. .. being a fashion designer ... i felt your video was so helpful 💕
So nice of you
As a student from England studying graphic design, I’ll definitely be trying to implement these into my work and daily life! Great video, new viewer and thoroughly enjoy the vids.
Jack, I have a new video coming out on Monday about how to gather trends and how to use them. Come back on Monday and check it out.
I actually love your videos ❤
I am currently attending a community college right now and I just figured out that graphic design is the route I would like to take. I am planning on getting an internship after completing my portfolio then starting my career in graphic design right after I get my associates degree. I have looked at many CZcams videos to help me learn some good tips on it but yours stood out to me in many ways. Thank you so much for making this and keep up the good work!
You rock SHACK! Sounds like you are starting in on an amazing journey. Check back in and let me know how it goes. Sub to my newsletter on my website (see description) - I announce everything there. I think you'll dig it.
Your videos are so inspiring , last two days I have been watching your videos . Great job!
M, I'm psyched you have been checking out my older stuff. They are all timeless in what they cover - I'm glad you're enjoying them.
honestly one of the most useful and inspiring video on design that i've watched - i feel like if you master even one of the given advices, you would already be a way more successful designer than you are currently! while a bunch of other videos on graphic design or design in general on youtube are mostly created not by experienced designers but by amateurs who don't seem like they know what they are talking about (and you see it when you look up their portfolio and other content on youtube), you know that this video is created by a professional designer. if you haven't, i encourage you to look up Philip's work and portfolio - it's amazing. Author, thank you so much for creating quality content!
Tonia, you're very kind - thanks for taking the time to look at my work! Thanks for watching!
Thanks Philipp. Ima Start sketching more now 😁
Excellent advice, thank you Philip! I will use these tips in all creative projects.
Thanks Isabella Falche!
And i subscribed your channel, every single thing which you mentioned i found so relevant in my routine, seems i am on the right track. Great content keep it up, as they say "We lift by raising others" .
Well said - I love that phrase!
It's good to re-watch this video. I find the most important thing out of all that is to listen to feedback and don't take it negatively. I used to do that and it's only been the last year where I really have gone "hang on a minute, just listen, accept and create something even better". It can' t get any worse and you find yourself realising that it can make a huge difference not just for your own work but how your business runs. This should go with any type of business, even Gordon Ramsey is always obsessed by feedback and taking on board criticism as he just wants to make the experience even better for the customer.
Stuart - you have unlocked one of the hardest things for creatives to leverage - the ability to really hear criticism - and translate it into motivation to move to even higher levels of achievement - rather than chafing at it...It's a real sign of creative maturity!
I felt like the last lesson session happened at the college of graphic design course! With this video anybody would definitely motivated towards themselves n act perfect!!
You rock Pranay Tony.
