Derek Randall 174 Centenary Test 1977 MCG

  • Coming into the Centenary Test, Randall had played four Tests with a top score of 37. After crashing Lillee and Max Walker, and Kerry O’Keeffe, around MCG for 446 minutes, he had scored 174. Several times he was felled by bumpers from Lillee, on one occasion doffing his cap, on another getting struck a sickening blow on the side of the head. Notable was the way he hooked and pulled off the front foot, a shot that drew admiration from the watching Don Bradman. Despite defeat, he was named man of the match and established himself as one of England’s best loved and most determined cricketers.

Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use
    Fair use
Additionally, the fair use defense to copyright infringement was codified for the first time in section 107 of the 1976 Act. Fair use was not a novel proposition in 1976, however, as federal courts had been using a common law form of the doctrine since the 1840s (an English version of fair use appeared much earlier). The Act codified this common law doctrine with little modification. Under section 107, the fair use of a copyrighted work is not copyright infringement, even if such use technically violates section 106. While fair use explicitly applies to use of copyrighted work for criticism, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research purposes, the defense is not limited to these areas. The Act gives four factors to be considered to determine whether a particular use is a fair use: the purpose and character of the use (commercial or educational, transformative or reproductive); the nature of the copyrighted work (fictional or factual, the degree of creativity); the amount and substantiality of the portion of the original work used; and the effect of the use upon the market (or potential market) for the original work.

Agreed, when Derek was in the field, he reminded me of Jonty Rhodes.
Nobody dare take a crafty single when Derek was on field.
IMO the selectors were too quick to drop him

A great character. After getting out, Randall famously went through the wrong gate at the pavilion and was climbing towards the Royal Box. He later joked that he’d seen a red carpet and thought it was for him because he’d batted so well! A very humble man - not surprised he was lost for words when left with the microphone at the end.

@@g8ymw He was treated abysmally by the selectors. He never truly had a long 'run' in the international test side. He was selected in 1977, but dropped in 1978, brought back in 1979 then dropped until 1982 when he became an emergency opener (it was only in 1 day games he'd batted there before), then eventually dropped in 1984. I remember watching Derek bat in a Sunday league game in the early - mid 80's and he was so unorthodox in his strokeplay (unfurling the reverse sweep and several other shots not in the coaching manual) that it drove one of the bowlers to kick over the stumps in frustration!!

@@dlamiss As I've said in another post Randall's test career practically mirrored that of Tom Graveney. Both came into the test team as attractive, exciting stroke players, both became household names as a result of a brilliant score of 170,, both were frustratingly inconsistent, both were superb fielders, both failed to cement their place in the England team and both were discarded after eight years. Thankfully three years later Graveney was recalled, became a test regular and a successful batsman. I eagerly awaited Randall's recall but unfortunately it never came.

Agreed, Marsh was happy to give it the verbals as a fierce competitor but he was never a cheat. When Trevor Chappell decided to bowl that infamous underarm ball to New Zealand, Marsh tried to stop him. He was desperate to win, but not at the cost of the game’s integrity. Sadly not all Aussies see things the same way.
