I have visited and found their grave in the local cemetery. Along with my grandfather, who passed when my Dad was 4 years old, in a motorcycle accident. Aradale has always fascinated me , and I hope to visit one day. 😊

Hi Mike, there was a forensic prison built on site there as shown. Not j ward but this one was definitely used and later became part of a female prison. I remember when the SOG did some training there as it was the same time they parked the police helicopter on our property for overnight security instead of having it under guard on Alexandra oval . As for the deaths that’s the figure quoted by many sites over its 130 years of operation. When growing up in Ararat everyone’s parents basically worked at Aradale or j ward, the prison, the railways or brucks. They were good times.

I worked a couple of weeks in Aradale when it was still open in the 80's when I was a student nurse. We also toured J Ward when it was open but weren't allowed to do any shifts in there (too dangerous).
I used to see that place from the Tarara Roadhouse when I used to stop there in the 80s running Melb-Perth Xpress, and I remember how creepy it looked at dusk, gave me the shivers lol
wow it's huge...what are they going to do with it ? I'd turn it a school for Agriculture n fill it up with students...it's really gorgeous but with a dark history that needs to be overwritten

The size of the place is enormous. It could be made into a nice town. Wonder if this was one facility, Kennett shut down? I have family in Nhill, and went on holidays there, but never heard or seen this place. Must have been 100's housed there.

That is in the section that was rebuilt into a prison in the late 90’s, it was built to be a high security section but from memory it mainly served as a women’s prison , later to be only used for training purposes by police and prison security I believe. Hi there, the bulk of the site yes you can. The larger central part is fenced off but they do run tours there if you want to get right inside the building parts and through the old morgue etc. well worth a look around. Enjoy your trip.

It isn’t the end of the world just sounds that way. Great Chinese museum there, this was the town that many Chinese walked overland from Port Fairy (I think) to join the gold rush. The government would not let them dock in Melbourne. Now I think back they may have docked in SA. A lot of history here.

WHY CAN'T THE GOVERNMEMT CHANGE IT AND USE IT AS A RECOVERY CENTRE FOR JUVENILES IREFERRED THERE FROM THE COURTS. WITH THE ON SITE FACILITIES OF MARKET GARDENS, ETC, THE JUVENILES CAN LEARN SKILLS WHICH WOULD MAKE THEM "JOB READY" WHEN THEIR TIME THERE IS OVER. Alternatively, why not modify it and make a place for the homeless, or as an age-care facility? C'mon Government public servants, where is your creativity?
Because in todays silly times that would be considered “wrong” by the vocal minority that seems to push their ideals on everyone else and a government that gives in them as they are only worried about the next election and their pay cheque not the future of the country.
Umm have you done any research on this place ? Where there are also “ghost” tours that run a few times a week and it’s reported as the most haunted place in Australia, that’s why. Hope you enjoyed the place.

The grounds are well kept mowed and maintained to a point. Is it the local council that’s in charge of the estate?
I’m pretty sure it’s council that mows the grass, not much other maintenance happens there.

Yeah 2 a week average for 130 years is quite amazing as far as deaths inside a facility is concerned.

Surely there must be an on-site caretaker watchman or something. I have been through the jail (not as inmate) and it is bad enough.

Government decided to put all the patients /clients out into community housing and have carers work in the houses instead.
