Steve McQueen was one of Hollywood’s highest paid stars - and one of its most difficult, most rebellious and, when he wished, most charming. His story is told with film clips from his greatest performances.
Abandoned by his father, he was a reform school kid with nothing going for him and a giant chip on his shoulder. He joined the Marines, but never stayed far from trouble.
Then he discovered acting - and the woman who would be with him for most of his meteoric career.
His story is told with film clips from his greatest performances, including The Magnificent Seven, Love With The Proper Stranger, The Cincinnati Kid, The Reivers, The Great Escape, The Thomas Crown Affair, and Bullitt.
Also shown are home movies - and the recollections of those who knew him best, including Steve’s first wife, Neile McQueen Toffel and their children, Terri and Chad, fellow actors Chuck Norris, Karl Malden, Don Gordon, as well as directors, producers, agents and the racing buddies who saw it all happen. Narrated by James Coburn. - Zábava
Imagine living in a time when we had Hudson , Newman, McQueen, Presley, beattie, Bronson, Coburn, Bruce Lee...
I was, I did, Oh my
@@susandefrance1326 You're lucky, all great talents and charisma. I don't even bother watching modern films these days, Clooney, Pegg, Cruise, Depp, Pitt...not interested.

Jimmy Stewart
And many more we had , the 60’s 70 and 80’d had the greatest actors and singers , mo more I don’t think
In the 70’s I worked in a little joint at Topanga Beach, Steve was friends with the owner, he use to come in. We always kept a six pack of Old Milwaukee in the fridge for him. Never ate, just had a beer.
Steve McQueen was one of the greatest. One of my favorite actors. I still watch "wanted dead or alive" on Saturday afternoons. The narrator of this video was also great!! I have a big photo of me and James Coburn hanging in my living room; from when I met him at the Denver Film Festival. He was so happy that I had the box video of "Cross of Iron", my favorite war movie. He was as good as Steve. These actors were at the top of the acting game!! They could draw you in. They could get your attention❤😅 TOM LIPPI Denver, Colorado
Me too! I tape the show. He’s the all time best actor and sexy man ever. I adore him!
When Steve McQueen died at 50 in 1980, I cried my eyes out and I thought he was old. Today that I’m 52, i think that he was a kid.
I spent the day with Steve McQueen
I just turned 54 and didn’t realize how young he was until i saw the making of The Great Escape recently....He seemed like he lived a 2 life times...
Well I too am 52 I also cried when Steve McQueen died, I also thought he was old too not realising I would one day get to be older than him and I don’t feel old (I know it’s a different era) but I do agree he sure fitted a lot into those 50yrs but to this day and going forward always try dress like him n without even knowing act n thinking like him ! The nearest thing to him today is Brad Pitt or Mel Gibson like Errol Flynn (another who died at 50) some of the greatest actors of all time. I miss him not like my Dad but a big brother!
@@edwardsaldana2879 hey Ed, you lucky man! Please expand...what did you do? Did you have fun?
52 now also. I must have come here to read these comments. It never occurred to me until I was approaching 50 why no pictures of Steve McQueen ... OLDER. It really struck me when I took the time to explore both the obvious and what I didn't know.
Nice thread ...
Steve McQueen and Paul Newman - we’ll never have such superstars ever again.
You need to be careful with who gets top billing with these two
Ohhhhh …. stick around. The one thing America’s got is talent. And then some!
Roger Moore and Burt Reynolds also two greats who where there at the same time as Paul Newman and Steve McQueen.
Steve McQueen is Timeless !! He lived the American dream came from a broken home and made it all the way to the elite top of the world. He was a breed apart and there will never be another one like him again. Thank you Steve for all your magic . Rip In Peace Steve you have earned it .
To be narrated by James Coburn. What a classic honor. To both, thanks and Semper Fi. RIP.
I have a few memories of McQueen’s performances, but will never forget eg Coburn’s Flynt movies and stories about him.
I thought it was Leonard Nemoy until I saw your comment.
I met James coburn once in San remo italy
❤❤
Are you latin? You Americans use and abuse "Semper Fi" for no reason at all. As a Latin i find that extremely offensive.
Robert Vaughn was a close friend of Steve and and said in an interview that they went to a motorcycle race where Steve was told the studio forbade his participation. On their drive back it started raining but even though the top was down they never got wet- Steve was driving soooooo FAST !!!
Steve McQueen made you feel good just to see him. He was always so confident in his movies. I believe he wanted acceptance from everyone. His presence was awesome. Wish he were here, he had a lot more movies to make. Love you Steve.
If he was still here, he wouldn’t be making any movies. I can tell you that. Because he would be 92 years old now.
@@garlandremingtoniii1338isn't it obvious that the comment was meant to mean in this day and age but Steve McQueen still being at the top of his game in the age range of that?!
You had to be a bad ass to have James Coburn narrating your biography.
Class all the way with Coburn.
Wasn't James Coburn in Magnificent Seven with McQueen? Or was a different Mag 7??

GONE OVER 40 YEARS AND STILL A STAR
Coburn narrating the McQueen story. Something right about that.
Steve McQueen WILL NEVER DIE !!!
in 1968 I had the opportunity to meet and get to know McQueen during the filming of "The Thomas Crown Affair". The Director, Norman Jewison, was our next door neighbor in Massachusetts during the filming. The Jewison children were my age, and through that friendship got to see McQueen and Fay Dunaway fairly often. McQueen was a great guy, instantly likeable..his silver Ferrari was pretty cool too.
Interesting story.
WOW!!! Too cool!!!
I met him in Prescott Arizona on the set of Junior Bonner. They hired a bunch of us young cowboys to help out and play extras. He was cool as can be. The whole town adored him. He brought one of his dirt bikes to the fairgrounds, and did some wheelies for us.
Steve McQueen was the definition of cool - a great actor - an original like no other
That’s how I’ve always seen him
and will always say about him,
He’s The Definition Of Cool.
He and Elvis never saw eye to eye. I loved them both but Elvis was more hostile to Steve than the other way round
There are things about him I admire, but he was also very willful and intractable. He marched to the best of his own drum. Sometimes when you live that way, you trample on other people.
He could do more with a glance than any actor couldn't do with 5 pgs of script
Could do more with a glance than any actor couldn't do with 5 pgs of script. Unreal
Hard to believe that Steve McQueen would be 92 years of age now.
It's easy to understand why his legend continues after seeing this great documentary film.
Yup. He'd be 92 now, just like Clint Eastwood this year.
Sad to imagine what's been lost...
Yeah! He died young though he had cancer went to old Mexico for help lost his life he died in hopes to defeated it
@@tnteachertimI was thinking the same thing (93 though- one year after your post)! His name, imagine and work, still a Big name! Very cool!

He was one of those who truly lived life to the fullest as he achieved more in 50 years than most would in two lifetimes.
Wow
Money gives you that privilege .
@@mr.majestic2667 It surly helps!
maybe you missed it but he never made the jump in the Great Escape, that was Bud Elkins. His star was fading in the 70s and fading very badly. He lost out to guys who showed off the muscles like Bronson, Eastwood, Sean Connery and a young Harrison Ford and Stallone. Steve McQueen had no muscles to show off. Movie goers were over the moon with movies like Rocky, Star wars and Empire Strikes Back so they had a good idea what movies should be like. In the end he made movies that no one wanted to see like the Enemy of the People, Tom Horn and The Hunter which all failed miserably at the box office. So much cool you can play in your mid 40s. You are welcome for that intelligent insight and observation.

Yes Steve McQueen even his name: I Love the Getaway (ext. Ali slapping) . Steve was the man
I remember when Steve McQueen past away. I only saw a glimpse of one of his movies. I know, though, that we lost a nice human being. I read that he was being treated for cancer. God bless him.
This guy makes me see what great talent was and what crap we have today.RIP
Yup, a road o CLAP!!! ;)
we still have great talent! it’s just harder to find ;)
I blame the studios. They greenlight the crap . It's the writing of scripts and dialogue where it all goes wrong. Actors aren't the problem.
Now days it is all about quantity not quality.
You are sure right about that!
An honest, no nonsense story of a real person who just happened to be a giant, both on screen and off - excellent!
Steve McQueen rest in peace bro. 1950 he was 20 years old. These are great stories ...
Steve McQueen....the man's man!!!!!!!
My brother died last year, and one week before he died, we saw Bullitt on the big screen. Never saw it before, and either had he. What an amazing film. To see it on the big screen was a real treat. So glad I got to see it with my brother before he passed. Now, when I see anything Steve McQueen it reminds my of my brother. They don’t make movie stars like this anymore. This documentary was so well done. McQueen was an exceptional actor who oozed "cool" on the screen.
Steve McQueen was the Daniel Craig of my youth. He was cool and I felt something special when I watched his movies. He was dangerous yet gentle too.
“Love with the proper stranger” (1963) is one of his most underrated movies. He and Natalie Wood are brilliant.
So is THE WAR LOVER
As this amazing documentary came to an end, I looked up at my Bullitt poster and smiled. The memory of Steve McQueen and the inspiration he still provides is always close by...
I just realized I too have a poster of him in my room that commemorates a motorcycle meet I attend with my son every year in Connecticut. Huh,cool. Of course I bought it because it was him in the great escape.
My favorite Steve McQueen line in Bullit: "Time starts now."
back then, I worked up to 20 hours a day, 6 and 7 days a week
so it was not strange that I woke up on the couch at 3 in the morning
the car chase on TV was so intense and action packed, i had to watch
I had no idea about this movie, never heard of it
I witnessed the greatest car chase in the history of television
when it was over, i knew I would tell someone about it
i fell back asleep, affected
i've still never seen the movie
but I did watch that chase
that was 25 years ago
for a long time i thought that bullit represented the car. funny
A truly gifted actor doesn’t have to say anything to speak volumes. Facial expression and body language speak louder than the human voice
What a remarkable woman his first wife was. I'm so glad he was a good father. I was in high school when Bullitt came out. The chase scene was a HUGE deal with the boys. Funny now to think no one had ever seen that in a movie, since now you can't watch a movie without one.
Neile Adams was a revelation -she was a WWII teenage spy during the Japanese occupation of Manila and carries shrapnel wounds from the Allied liberation -no shrinking violet. Her genuine love and affection for McQueen shows in every frame and their lifelong relationship and two clearly sane, happy offspring testify to her beautiful enduring character.
One of my favorite actors. He was a flawed human being but aren’t we all?
Actually, many folks are not seriously flawed at all.
Having flaws makes us human.
I used to be a flight attendant and I had James Coburn on a flight - the nicest man ever - he wanted to talk awhile - what a voice - nice to hear it again
COBURN is one of the greatest cool of cool 😎
Yes, that voice!
Yup, JC comes off as very refined doesn't he? That is probably FAKE like EVERYTHING else in Hollywood!
Unmistakeable voice! What did you talk about? Cool things I bet!
What a moment - a super-cool old style guy - that ruled. Loved him in Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid...
My favorite film with Steve McQueen is Love with the Proper Stranger. He was superb in all his movies, but he was unsurpassable in this one. This movie was and still is very special to me. RIP Steve, and thanks.

Even after they divorced, they looked after their children together and remained friends. I don't think she ever stopped loving him......
I think The Getaway is one of the best action films ever made. Papillon is an astoundingly work of art. And Love With the Proper Stranger is so much more than a chick flick.

Gotta include Paul Neuman!
Clint Eastwood's latest film, Cry Macho, could be his last film. He's 91 and still looks great. Hope he's around for a long time.
An ex Marine who made grown men weep with his looks, acting, conversation and allure; as with all genius he never once believed his status and/or intense PR; he was the epitome of a man's man.

When I reside in Beverly hills as a young lady, I was a pedestrian on Canon Road, next to the light signal, and suddenly someone ran in front of me, bent down and grabbed thesignal pole. He looked panicked, like he was running away from something or someone. I recognized him immediately. It was none other than Steve McQueen! There will only ever be one Steve McQueen, may he rest in peace! Favour the Brave!
Culture has changed and people are much softer today. In McQueens days the actors and actresses had life experience before they made it in Hollywood.
Today they tend to come from college and have a relative in the industry. Completely different people.
Steve McQueen, Coburn, Garner and Marvin all served in the military before they actually made it in Hollywood.
Clint Eastwood served in the Army and he actually had his aircraft crash in the ocean and he had to swim to safety so that is his experience in Sully on screen.
Today's action stars have personal trainers and are using steroids.
Usually when a movie character is a Marine he looks like a comic book super hero.
The first time I saw the kid's movie Chicken Run, a stop action claymation, the main character chicken was sent to the "cooler" by the farmer, it was an empty coal bin, and the chicken sat down and started throwing a ball just like McQueen in The Great Escape. I was the only one roaring with laughter in the theater, no one seemed to get or know the connection. The whole Chicken Run movie was basically a cartoon take on The Great Escape.

Something of interest that went unmentioned in this documentary is a time when Steve McQueen and his wife, Neile Adams, were cast together as a couple. It was in a 1960 episode of 'Alfred Hitchcock Presents,' entitled 'Man from the South' (an adaptation of a Roald Dahl story).
I met Steve McQueen in 1969. Out in the middle of nowhere at Willow Springs Raceway. Nobody else was around, Just Steve working on his car. I was a Senior in High School. What was neat was it was just Steve and myself. He treated me like a Pal.
A good buddy of mine, Tom Pinerri. Raced a saturday or sunday where Steve Mcqeen raced as well. Spoke so highly of Mcqeen's humility & just being a real normal dude at the race track. Tom's mother actually had Mcqeen on her 8 or 16 mm film. All positive, humble, helpful towards other "Racers". Probably, had that same "Blood- runing through his veins". Just a positive snipet of a STUD!
They certainly don’t make them like Steve anymore. Steve McQeen was an original that will never be duplicated.
True, sadly.
Late in his life, after McQueen became very reclusive. At his beach home, neighbors said he worked on his motorcycle in his living room. He would also sometimes take the contents from his mailbox directly to the ocean and dump them.
Im very happy to know that before his diagnosis he became a Born Again Christian. He was asked if he had any regrets to which he answered "I wish I had more time to tell people about Jesus and what He can do for their lives".
So glad to hear! I always wondered about this! God bless him❤️💜
@@mariefricchione437 Yes. He wanted to start flying and a friend directed him to a flight instructor who just so happened to be a Christian. One thing led to another and Steve began to attend the instructors church.
Bravo!! Bravo!! Bravo!! I'm and so glad I was born young enough to have seen Steve McQueen's first movie he starred in and each and every other he starred in. All of them just great! He was born to be a star! I got to see them filming the car scenes on the hills and streets of San Francisco coming down the hill. Just happen to be walking there.
Childhood is so important. A bad one can affect you for the rest of your life. He had a crap one that is why he was like he was.
The Great Escape brilliant.
I agree. Our childhoods form the foundation of our lives. Steve McQueen's childhood was a mixed bag. He had an uncle who took care of him but was abandoned by his mother and father. His mother took him back at 12 but his stepdad was a jerk. He was then sent off to the boys home until 16. I think his childhood was a 2 edge sword and might probably had a lot to do with his drive in life to succeed but also left him empty and looking for happiness outside himself. His first wife Neely seems to be just a wonderful woman who also had a lot to do with his success but he couldn't just be happy with her, he had to look elsewhere.
I always thought and have heard this in a couple of documentary's about McQueen, that he really identified with the part of Jake Holman in "The Sand Pebbles" which is why he did such a great job with that role and the movie is one of my favorites. IMO I think it's his best role.
That's also why his performance in Papillon is so great.
It’s good to hear the truth about Steve. What an outstanding soldier.
Happy 91 st. B-Day S.M. You Will Always be My Hero. Semper-fi.
P.S. He Should Had Won the Oscar for "Papallion"
Excellent story of a man. It brings out different sides of McQueen, mysteries, yet there's a thread. Even if you don't know who he is, it's a great story of a person in search of himself, a person who struggles, yet who is fueled by, his passions, a person who had nothing given to him, who had to figure it out and work hard. Watch it.
Partied with him in 1978 on the Sespe River at a place called Swallows Nest. He stopped at a liquor store and was buying beer. That’s where I was at the time. I met him shook his hand and told how much of a fan I was. He told me where he was going and said if I wanted to go I was invited to drink a few beers with him.
A fellow flyer who passed away a couple of years ago, who was a scrambler, was friends with Mcqueen. He visited the States from the UK. He said James Coburn picked him up from a hotel to meet up with Steve.
Think they went on a pub crawl and ended at the house were the bar pulls back to reveal a pool. Not sure who owned that.
