I think the main reason that Tom Scott adjusted the thumbnail on his last video is to better reflect what he's saying in the video and not because of a sudden change of mind. At around 3 min in that video he describes his plans as "taking a break" and "this probably isn't goodbye goodbye, like not forever" which clearly shows that he is reserving the option of making new content in the future.

Tom Scott never said he was retiring for good and 100%, he just said that the regular uploads would stop, he was clear on that for a long time. So the update in thumbnail (and title) is most likely just a change that was needed because many people misread the title.

At 2:10 Tom Scott says "it's time to take a breather," and in the first 4 minutes he explains that he might even upload more of the same series.

As an artist (photographer) that got "retired" due to sickness out of my control, and also extremely frustrating because I'm not ready to stop working, I feel that first part HARD. If I wasn't stuck with the changes that got forced me; I'd 100% still be working. Lmao'd at the Tom Scott comment too, I went in late to his channel but he sure had a lot of fun. I see it as the algorithm forcing creators to put out more videos than they wanted because otherwise youtube would stop showing/recommending them. CZcams is a very strange medium now that it's trying to be commercialized by google and had lost a lot of it's freedom. Especially with the newfound ad push.

I have yet to watch the whole video but something that already struck me as weird was MatPat and Tom Scott catching flack for "retiring", when both very clearly stated that they are retiring from continuously hosting and releasing "their" main formats. Both clearly stated that they wont just be gone forever but refocus their attention elsewhere. Tom Scott retired the recurring, scheduled format. MatPat retired his main host role

    • @wonday2738
      @wonday2738 Před měsícem +2

They're getting flack for clickbaiting it as such, MatPat was just on the show and described his "retirement". Colin and Samir are aware of this, they simply assumed most their viewers could understand the context they're speaking in. Looking at the comments many didn't. Why would you make a comment before watching the whole video? Also, Colin and Samir recently hosted MatPat, how is that flack?

In my opinion most people that claim they have stress and burnout have never had a really crappy job. I have been in the military and have worked in customer service for Netflix. I wake up every day like it is Christmas because I am a full-time creator. Even when things are rough and the views are down it is better than the best days in the Army and Netflix.

Good points here. I'd happily burn out if a job pays well. But after 20 years and no prospect of ever owning anything you do end up thinking that you do it for survival only. Also, health issues creep up and it's easier to burn out when you aren't as healthy as you were.

That point about the "singular artistic voice" is really interesting. At a certain point as you scale that "artistic voice" also becomes a "brand voice". It might be based on the original voice(s) of the individual creator(s) but as you build a team of people, all of whom have an impact on the final product, it becomes a branded style and tone of voice instead. And it's the scaling up of the projects, teams and scope that requires that shift.

You made a point that will stick with me forever. You are a successful video, media platform, “ on CZcams”and have been unsuccessful 70% of the time.
I took the leap to be a full-time creator, and 2021. Exactly 3 years ago. Averaging 1.5 million views per month that number dwindled down to 250,000 per month. I am technically a failure on CZcams at this point yet I still manage to do this full-time. Because of a massive pivot. ( won’t get into what I did here ) but, hearing you guys say this, and living through it myself really helps me not feel Alone. You guys rock I watch everything you do and thank you so much for putting your best foot forward 100% of the time so that 30% success rate can keep you going because you guys sure add so much to this space

In both his original announcement and his goodbye video he talked about it being a break instead of permanent, and that he’s still going to be doing his Lateral Podcast, Technical Difficulties etc., and the thumbnail change is just because people saw the thumbnail, made assumptions that he’d be stopping forever, and didn’t watch/pay attention to the content of the video.

I like that “jacket” metaphor (analogy?).
Though I do think that hasn’t always been the reality. Up until very recently, the understood rule on CZcams has been, “you cannot afford to take a break because people will forget about you and not care when you come back.” Not that that’s always been the case; plenty of very successful channels have taken long, announced breaks and returned to even greater success. But they’ve always been seen as the exceptions.
I’d say pre-COVID era creator advice would say, “You might as well burn the jacket, because if you put it away, whenever you decide to take it out of the closet and try it on again, no one will be there to see it.”
I think the quality of a creator’s content and the audience/relationship with said audience that they’ve already garnered provides a more padded safety net of the viewers patience.
And more recently I’ve been finding more and more creators reinforcing that sentiment when offering advice, y’all now included. I hope it becomes more normalized across the board that breaks are not something to be afraid of (*as long as you’re making stuff that you believe in and not just riding trends.)
Good people will wait for good videos.

Same for music producers: As soon as the album is out you're already thinking about how to keep the buzz alive with the next one. The hussle is exhausting.

CZcamsrs leaving on their own terms has always been a thing, and it's the best way to go. I guess this brings awareness that these careers are short, and it's best to take it in your own hands. I made a video a few months ago all about how creators cope when they lose their fame on their own terms vs. when the attention falls off of them, and it's pretty fascinating to see the difference.

i look at it like the military: when your a low rank aka scaling, your boots in the mud working hands on.
when you rank up, you become more like a manager using the troops below you to write scripts, edit, etc

CZcams is great in the sense that it can be pursued as a hobby or a business startup. If the latter path is chosen by a creator, the creator is an entrepreneur by default. An entrepreneur by default is risk taking and risk preferred, wherein the risk reward payoff is highly asymmetric. As such, most content creators, provided they scaled well over time without much overhead or costly liabilities, can freely decide how they wish to conduct their business. Unlike most brick and mortar businesses, CZcams offers a high degree of optionality and risk.

Samir calls the sections "projects". I like the idea of "seasons". I like for example "Jet Lag: The Game". They are maybe filming three seasons a year. With flying to the places and such they may take three weeks a year plus cutting the footage. There are like five months in between most seasons. And thats totally fine.

Plogging is a combination of jogging with picking up litter, merging the Swedish verbs plocka upp and jogga gives the new Swedish verb plogga, from which the word plogging derives

To Samir's jacket analogy that he got from Deep Cut or Full Time Filmmaker now, MatPat literally ends his farewell video hanging his jacket. He will pick it up again at some point, just not now. Don't ever think you're done creating

I think C&S's disagreement about when you stop being a "creator" is just a symptom of how broad the industry has become. When Samir says you stop being a "creator," I think he means that you start being a "media executive."
The reality though, I think, is simply that "creators" encompass millions of creative people, while a subset of those creators have scaled to the point of being "media executives," and yes, to Samir's point, that might happen when you hire your first (non-partner) employee, because that's when you become a "manager," on your way to full-blown "executive."
