  • @MrKnotWright

    The black flashing tape should have gone on TOP of the tyvek to seal it to the window, cut the tyvek about an inch short of the window so the tape has a place to stick to the house and the tyvek, there should be no black flashing tape applied to the bottom of the window because you trap moisture which will eventually rot out the bottom plate under the window. On your siding you should NEVER line up the seems over each other, you always stagger them to keep them from leaking, they also make a piece of "flashing" to go behind the seams that laps over the bottom row so the water can't get behind it.

    • @scottsatterthwaite4073
      @scottsatterthwaite4073 Před 9 měsíci +4

      You CAN use tape at the bottom, but it is applied before the window is installed. But you are correct, in a case like this where he is installing new Tyvek with existing windows, tape both sides and then across the top but nothing at the bottom.

The amount of things done wrong is absolutely mind blowing and scary to think about. $3500 is a good price but when its done wrong your costing yourself more money and harm then you are saving. You would have been better off if you paid the 10k to have the job done properly.

  • @gtpro700
    @gtpro700 Před 9 měsíci +71

    You are not supposed to tape the bottom of the window. You effectively had made it worse then no tape at all because if the old windows leak which they probably do you now trapped the moisture/water in at the bottom and will rot the house.

    • @stingray52
      @stingray52 Před 9 měsíci +6

      He should've put the flashing tape on the outside of the house wrap instead of under it. It's also weird to cover the siding seams with a trim instead of staggering the siding.

    • @gtpro700
      @gtpro700 Před 9 měsíci +4

      @@stingray52 I think taping the flange is probably a debatable point because house wrap isn’t perfect at keeping water out behind it so if water is to get behind it and the tape is on the outside it could get behind the window. So I’m not that concerned with that but taping the bottom is definitely a no no and yea I agree not staggering the seams looks terrible

  • @Torbox1
    @Torbox1 Před 9 měsíci +12

    Looks pretty good but it feel like you really rushed this. You should have either held the siding back the width of the trim boards or installed the trim boards first so that they would have butted up edge to edge, like around the garage door, not stacked on top of each other. Now you have massive gaps behind the trim due to the it being on top of the angled siding which will make it difficult to water seal. You can still remedy this before you go any further by removing the trim and using an oscillating tool to trim the siding back. The old trim was done right and there were no gaps, also when you go to replace the windows you will have to cut the siding in order to free them since you put the siding over the nailing lip, at least in some places. Probably would have been better to also remove all the planters and concrete touching the house before you started.

  • @mariuszarszylo1476

    I find it strange that you didn't put any insulation down prior to installing the tyvek. Also you always want to stagger the siding so it keeps from leaking. The way you installed the back siding is not going to hold up long-term. I highly encourage you to go back and fix it before there's more damage down the road.

    My 1960 house had those windows where a pane of glass was "stopped in" with wood trim. You can upgrade to an IGU (insulated glass unit) made to fit if you don't have the budget for the larger window in a frame. It can be a reasonable choice for very large (non-operable) picture windows.

      Yeah, honestly, the garage isn’t as impressive as I was expecting. Unfinished floors plus textured walls was just a poor choice IMO

    Hola! 🖐WOW ! Lots of harsh comments below about the seams. I'll ask the question this way, does the manufacturer have that info in the "destructions" document that you have in your hands at the beginning of the installation? If so then I guess you are good to go. IF NOT, what did your research show about lining up the seams that way? I like to ask questions and am always ready to learn something new rather than just fire off a critical comment. Looking forward to seeing this after the painting portion of this project. Take care and have a good one, Adios! 👊

    Hey, love your channel. Hey, I was wondering if you are concerned about leaving ALL your tools in that house. I imagine you don't live there. I HOPE you have a great alarm system. Can't wait to see what you do next!!

    I think lime washing the chimneys would give it an extra pop with that nice new siding.

    Not sure how long metal levels are long, but you could get a plumb bob.

    Question about your video sponsor bc I actually am interested in buying this - Orbit and RainBird have basic 2 zone DIY sprinker system kits that come with the piping, heads, and everything. Is this sprinkler system timer like a smart variation of those DIY kits?

    U forgot to stagger the joints on the siding

      This particular siding offers seams strips so you can opt not to stagger if you want

    This videos is a great example of how not to replace siding. So many mistakes were made on this job. And the fact that you didn't replace the windows loses curb appeal.

    Literally cannot believe those windows and doors were left. Its garbage. Even cheap off the shelf windows and doors at HD would have been light years better.

    What happened to covering that weird bathroom window in front? I guess lack of time, materials or budget constraints?

    The corner by the brick chimney - this is very not good because the roof flashing appears to be funneling water *behind* the house wrap.
